hear john say..' love that' as he's effectively playing half of 'you really got me' by the kinks one year before them but gets swamped in the mix..0.17
When The Beatles were more John's band, they were together, when Paul started taking over too much it became a joke, "hello, goodbye" romper room shit like that... definitely not John's Beatles anymore by that time. "you say walk, I say trot, you say maybe, I say why not?"... "now lets work on our multiplication tables kiddies"
@XenoType008 Mulitiplication tables might have been more compelling than "Number 9, number 9, number 9..." Yes, when the Beatles were John's band, they were more together but not because they were John's band. It was because they were a young band and just about every band starts out more together in their early days. John was great, Paul was great but they made each other even greater.
To learn how to hear the hidden message in Beatles songs, search "Truth Contest" in Google and click the 1st result, then open The Present and read through the section about The Beatles. This could change the world. Thumbs up this comment, copy and paste it on other songs.
Anybody else notice that if you start the count, as they did, and keep counting 4/4, when the buildup into the first verse come, the timing is off. There's like an extra half beat in there just before the vocals start. I found this learning this song on my guitar. After listening to it again and again, I think it is an editing mistake. It's apparent by the volume change at the beginning of the build up going into the verse.
@Nowhereman90 -If you knew ANYTHING about The Beatles, you'd know it was Paul's muscially genius and his "pushiness" that kept them together. If we had to rely on John's drug use and state of mind from being high all the time and being brainwashed by Madame Nu, The Beatles would have ceased to exist by 1967. If you appreciate anything by them after 1967 thank Paul. And I say shut the f**k up YOKO!
There was a backlash against Paul in the years after John's death. Thankfully that seems to have subsided now and Paul is again being recognised as the driving force within the group in addition to being a musical genius. John was a creative talent, no doubt about that, but creativity alone isn't enough. Paul understood the whole process from songwriting to final production and his genius lay in his understanding of how to blend pure innovation and tradition.
@Nowhereman90 see, if you know who they were, then you would under stand that the beatles wouldn't have even gotten very famous without paul keeping them streight, and if paul weren't around they would have crashed by the 60's, so go back to the devil's daughter (Yoko) hater
@lydiammajors Is amazing how for one joke comment i made eight months ago, i still receive hate responses from these geeks. I know plenty of things about the beatles. You re right about Paul but please, dont bother me, you internet strangers
Does anyone know who the Beats are? As a 21 year old, stuck in the 60's I was give a record by the Beats and they sing this song. Poor aunt tried to tell me it was the Beatles, no dam way. The record sleeve on the front says The Beats. Thank you.
At 2:28 -- Where was THAT used for the Strawberry Fields Forever / Penny Lane single cover? That photo looks like its from the replacement-photo session for the Yesterday & Today LP cover in 1966 (after the controversy of the "butcher" cover).
Regrettably, voice recognition accuracy is ignored by posters, probably in some attempt to convince themselves that Paul was in someway the Beatle's leader and minimizing John's contributions. The voice is clearly George's voice as anyone (most) familiar with the four Beatles voices would attest. Also, Paul would be the first to admit that he (or anybody) could impose his (their) will on Lennon. This is just fact and not siding with John or Paul.
@feynman35 False. Anyone familiar with their voices can tell that that's Lennon, not Harrison. And McCartney was perfectly capable of imposing his will on Lennon in the studio, especially on a song (like this one) that they truly co-wrote. Plus, the "let's do it slower" was said in a way that made it clear that even Lennon wasn't too sure about it.
@gpc In the times of expensive analogic recording tape even being a beatle one would have a tendency to use shhh to minimize the chatter during recording time.
Paul is saying 'No' to George, not John. George asked to do it slower. John and George have similar voices, but George's voice is a little 'scousier' , After decades of hearing interviews of all the Beatles, I can tell the difference between them no problem. And since it is George, Paul had no qualms against shutting him up.
Phenomenal ! The very first performances and recording (in studio) of "I Want to Hold You Hand" This is a collectors' dream !
They were the very best and take me back to times of fun and innocence. Wish you could have lived back then.. No band young or old has since created the excitement these guys did. It was wonderful to be alive back then !
It would be awesome to see a video of them doing this. I wish I could see the look on John's face when Paul told him to "Shh!" and also Paul's face when he yelled at Ringo!
2:27 they still look kinda beatlemanish they hav longer hair when they were in the video john looked completely different, did they record strawberry fields with the moptop hair?
@nightcrawler511 No, they had already grown moustaches and Lennon had his "How I Won the War" shorter haircut and granny glasses when they recorded Strawberry Fields. The record company just used a photo that was several months old (from some time in '66).
Ringo is messing around on his kit (as a drummer, I also plead guilty on all counts - of driving my band members crazy!). Paul is not being bossy at all, just getting some focus. John adds a lot of humor by jokingly yelling, "Ringo."
Well don't forget, the Beatles weren't the band they would become yet. So studio time was scarce and they had to get a lot done in a short amount of time. So Paul was just trying to get things done. I have to admit he sounds a little over-bossy here but eh, in the confines of a band, you usually don't care. Except maybe after a bunch of years..which is exactly what happened :)
Actually, this is how it went. Paul says "Ringo, keep your bit dead." then Ringo says "WE KNOW!!". It is Ringo that is getting inpatient and yells. THen Paul drops his tone and says "we're taping". Why would Paul be yelling RINGO!! when he already stopped playing the drums?.
A long growing perception of mine -- that Paul led the band in a number of ways. Paul's great ear for music guides a important portion of the dynamics behind their unique sound. His understanding of the beat is nuanced and complex, but always very fundamental, too.
@27dedrummer wrong if Paul was less douchey we'd have had the Beatles longer at least..."hey George don't play the way you want, play the way I WANT, hey Ringo, you're playing the drums wrong, let ME PLAY INSTEAD... John, I've got 20 songs to record... let's work on those... we'll get to yours later ok"
@greenhalos725 they were all like that to each other, let's not single anyone out because i'm sure each beatle thought "he" was a victim but all of them were guilty in the end.
How can they kill the band that wrote the song? You can't do it better than the Beatles. If it's any different, than it isn't played the same as the original.
It's seems to me that John always knew that Paul was always thinking of the group as a whole but when it came down to it John was the dominate personality (leader) when he chose to be.
I would say that John is the most creative genious in the band, but Paul was a leader (created the "sgt peppers" concept..) and definitively loved the beatles more than John... Anyway John wasn't "only sleeping" ; )
please how can anyone make an opinion about paul mccartney from such a short record. Of course everyone knows he was bossy and that's what helped making the Beatles the best band ever! he wanted the best possible! and that wasn't supposed to be mean on ringo. They all liked one another! Loving the Beatles is loving all of them. And Paul was right about the "let's do it slower" "no!!" lool
And about John's comment that Ringo wasn't even the best drummer in the Beatles, that was pure crap and John regretted it deeply. He later said wonderful things about Ringo as a drummer that nobody bothers to quote. Why do people enjoy putting Ringo down? If the Beatles hadn't hired him when they did THEY wouldn't have happened. And please listen to some old '50s R&R sometime -- Ringo was the first true rock drummer. Not fancy, just a fabulous backbeat and wonderful "feel" for music.
Just for the record, I'm a huge Ringo fan, and I don't for a moment thing Paul was "yelling" at him. This was back in the beginning when they were all, as Ringo has often said, "just four guys who really loved each other." They're just kidding around in the studio. Paul's just letting Ringo know they're going to try another take, so they need everything quiet (including the drums) to get started. This is just light hearted fun, not an argument.
There's nothing wrong with Paul's bossiness here, don't forget that they were a bunch of guys from a rough neighborhood, this is just how they talked to each other. No time to be sensitive. They definitely mellowed out as they became more "civilized."
Paul is NOT bossy he was just getting the job done he may of wanted to go home or something. Or he slept late and he was tired. I guess people saying he is a bossy pants and that John is the best beatle are NOT beatle fans because a true beatles fan likes ALL the beatles! (just saying)

no wonder they had trouble finding drummers... with Paul judging drummers snare hit by snare hit it's a wonder they ever recorded anything at all.
"Ringo!!!!!!!!!!!! the 45th 64th note you hit was WAYYYYYYYYY too soft, more ATTACK RINGO MORE ATTACK... but not so much on the 339th hit, and 12th bass beat 5th from the last on the latter measure of the 3rd refrain"
This comment has received too many negative votesshow
McCartney is a perfectionist... And he was the band's best all 'round musician... And he was the band's best drummer... When asked if Ringo was the best drummer in the world, Lennon replied: "Ringo isn't even the best drummer in the Beatles," half kidding, but half serious.

Ringo doesn't shout that. That's Paul shouting 'RINGO!', not Ringo shouting 'We know'

Lennon: "Let's do it slower."
McCartney: "No!! Shh!"
LOL. McCartney was probably the only human alive who could talk to Lennon like that. Well, him and Aunt Mimi.

@indigo321 It sounds a little like "bleedin' idiot," but it's not -- after the "Shh!" he says, softly, "clean beginning now."

Can someone explain me what does "keep your beat dead" means?
AndywinXp 2 years ago
I THINK Paul said "keep your BIT dead," as in your part. He's trying to get a quiet start for the next take, methinks.

I agree whole- heartedly. These men trusted each other's talents and depended on each other. That was one of there core strengths, I believe.

They definitely mellowed out as they became more "civilized."
superman11978 2 years ago 5

McCartney is a perfectionist... And he was the band's best all 'round musician... And he was the band's best drummer... When asked if Ringo was the best drummer in the world, Lennon replied: "Ringo isn't even the best drummer in the Beatles," half kidding, but half serious.
