@ 21 sec mark; Interviewer: "Rob, have you had any formal art training?" Rob: "No."
Had the interviewer done some research before hand, he would not have needed to ask that question. I have one request of Mr. Liefeld. Can you draw for me a person but keep the feet proportional to the person's body size while keeping the feet in scale to the perspective of the drawing?
@Ronaldo0710 How about a person whose hands are smaller than its waist. Or a machine gun that isn't larger than a moon. Or anyone whose costume contains neither shoulder pads nor pouches.
@JayDee284 Deadpool and Spider-Man have nothing to do with each other. They're just published by the same publisher. Granted Deadpool's mask looks reasonably similar and Deadpool cracks wise, but if you're going to call the latter plagiarism then you might as well say Spider-Man ripped off Bugs Bunny or something.
@MrLunitunz Rob Liefield swipes work from another artist when he draws that's how he made Deadpool he traced a Spider-Man drawing to make him Liefield is one of the worst swipers in comic books the guy can't draw 4 shit unless he swipes
@JayDee284 I won't disagree that Liefeld is a terrible artist, he is. He's a worse writer. But as far as Deadpool goes, I've never heard anything about him swiping from Spider-Man. If anything he swiped from Teen Titans and Deathstroke. Give him credit where credit is due.
@MrLunitunz ok Liefeld is a terrible artist and a terrible person he made Deadpool's look but did not make the personalty that Deadpool is know 4 and also liked 4
I never thought I'd see the day when I'd be defending Liefield, but you guys seem pretty bitter. If you don't like the state of the industry, change it. Liefield is snorting cocaine off a muscular, ill-proportioned, covered-in-pouches hooker as we speak and all you guys do is write shitty youtube comments and sound bitter. He co-created Deadpool, what have you done as of late?
this guy wasnt a terrible artist, all these people who say he's shit are shit. you couldnt draw better than him if you tried, go ahead and try. the guy got the job and he made a lot of books. i think hes good enough. seems like a geniuine person so thats enough for me, stop being trolls.
@joker9494949494 The fact that he made something (and i'm not talking about Deadpool because that character is annoyng as hell) doesn't make him a good artist. Even Hitler did something good. Was he a good person? Off course not.
@Il30 thats subjective and biased. to most of the germans he was a wonderful person. to you he was evil or whatever you believe, its subjective and opinion.
@joker9494949494 No! Germans thought he was a good person...in the past. I think a lot of reasonable people right now think he was evil. Stop. There are no IMHO about that. BTW, Liefeld IS a bad artist. He made some money with DC and Marvel but Young Justice wasn't that commercial success and he did something good (and i'm not talking about the art) with Alan Moore.
@joker9494949494 And again, maybe i am worse than him about drawing...but i am not working as a drawyer for Marvel or DC. I know what is my talent but he doesn't know. He should have listen to his parents.
you know whats worse than liefeld? artists who use photo ref. id rather see completely shitty work that is at least a genuine expression of an individual, than the sort of souless photo realism that is in vogue today.
I collect comics. I have a shitload of stuff from the early 90s, but it's all Vertigo. I don't have a single Liefeld comic in my collection. I may, however, get a copy of Youngblood #1 strictly for laughs.
You guys don't hate Rob Liefeld! You hate that as we were growing up, we actually bought into all of this crap. No one wants to admit it, but we were precisely the stupid kids that they thought we would be, chasing the trends and buying the books. Rob Liefeld is an embodiment of our shame, and should be a constant reminder that we shouldn't call today's kids stupid, cause face it, we were all just as bad.
@jodimest You're on to something. Liefeld was a pure product of the '80s mainstream: ME ME ME! (Totally empty.) I don't think I own anything by him. He is the comics equivalent of rock guitarist Eddie Van Halen. While the ultra-talented Van Halen wasted his gift on mindless, say-nothing/go-nowhere pop-rock numbers, some struggling visionary like Black Flag's Greg Ginn was getting the job done.
@jannyrcobs True, and many musicians from the 1990's and even today exist because of Greg Ginn and Black Flag. As for Liefeld, I think his rise to fame was more of a coincidence than anything. He just worked on the right stuff at the right time. I really don't believe anyone bought his stuff because of the art or even the writing. I think it's the overall idea that sold and then after his first big hit sold, anything with his name on it would sell just because his name was on a previous big hit.
you guys shitting on Rob.... Really sad...lol. He's done so much in his life and for better or worst, he's definitely a popular icon to this very day. It still boggles my mind how some of you are still not able to let go of this hate when he clearly moved on.

@tehblackarachnid Yea he created Deadpool, but when he made him he was as bland and generic as all his other characters. It was other writers that made Deadpool what he is. So he doesn't deserve credit even for that other than puking something out that other people had to work with.
Oh, so that's why humans are all fucked up looking in your comics, and people don't actually seem to exist in relation to one another the locations you draw them in, and guns and swords (which are ubiquitous in your comics) aren't actually being held. Gotcha.
@Cellmate412162 Rob Liefeld is to comic books what Ygnwie Malmsteen is to heavy metal. Also, pouches are to Rob Liefeld like explosions are to Michael Bay.
@Cellmate412162 No, there is a very clear reason why he did so well, especially in the 90s. His skills with anatomy were atrocious, and still are nothing to brag about. But his art is also extremely dynamic.
Yes, anyone can take a closer look at his work and see plenty of problems. But by the time most readers have noticed them, they've already paid for the comic. So it is moot.
End result: His work is junk, but it sells, and that's all that really matters from a business standpoint.
It's funny to hear everyone talk smack about Liefeld when he was so popular back in the day. I loved his stuff in high school. Can't believe how much it sucks now. Wow.
Liefeld can't draw anything worth a damn. If he can strike it rich then any artist should be able to. It's sad because he has no reason to improve since dumb fucks keep hiring him and buying his work.
@TRE1275 Marvel just won't give him up, he sold a million issues of X-force #1; Marvel hopes it will happen again, but what they don't realize is that everyone must have been on Crack at the time. His latest is deadpool corps. One of the corps members is a dog with a red deadpool costume and his name,...Dogpool LOL.
Met him at a comic convention this year. Very nice guy. While other artists were charging $20-$40 to do an original drawing he was doing them for free. I mean the line to see him was huge and most of people wanted a drawing. I got one of Deadpool
That's weird. At the end you can actually see his feet, and he's not standing on tippy-toes like a ballerina, and his feet don't taper off into points, and when he's holding a pen it looks like he's actually holding a pen, and his arms aren't thicker than his torso, and his hair looks the same in each shot, and his face isn't covered in cross-hatching, and...
I think he has made a few good contributions and kudos for him doing what he loves but he really should've learned anatomy better. I always get a chuckle at how he can draw people with humongous thighs and arms that look like layers of beef grafted to the body but itty-bitty, tiny, delicate, little feet.
Rob liefeid was the reason I never got into comics in the 90's. I did not know him or hated him but his art was just terrifying , they were muscle freaks on steroids . looking at his characters I can see why people related better to spider-man and other classic heroes.
Wow, bunch of Liefeld haters. Seems pretty stupid to me. Dude still makes alot of comics and his art has come quite a way. Image United has been great, and his recent Deadpool stuff has been cool as well. And back in the day, all you haters were more than likely loving his stuff.
It's pretty clear the guy has no formal training. I hate artists who brag about that. They might as well say " I have no idea how to draw because I've never been taught" People hate Liefeld because he flooded the industry with horrible art and Comic book characters. In turn, this inspired people who could not draw to enter the industry and contribute to the crap, and they allowed the stuff to be published.
@Manahyde dude he created as rip off of death stroke the personality of deadpool we love and know was created by someone else, but i guess you are right
@giantvee That's not entirely fair. I know a great deal of artist who didn't get formal training and can draw circles around even the best Marvel artist.
Does it really matter, if Shatterstar is gay or not, Im a huge Liefeld fan, but I think he more or less said that that was a ploy to make the character more interesting, when he was already a great character. But either way, it really doesnt matter.
how the hell can you think what this man does is good? seriously this isnt a matter of opinion he just cant fucking draw for shit. its like he's never seen a human, just been given a vague description and run with it. he is an art rapist, he rapes art.
Gotta tell ya, it's good 2 see a chanel that does not have an axe 2 grind w / ROB! No one deserves 2 be trashed the way he's been. A lot of folks that hate on him, ironically...are probably fans of DeadPool, Cable and others, that he's created or co-created. Just imagine had he not come with these characters, nobody would be talkin' about them 2day!!
I can't speak 2 the homophobia that u alledge, nor do I make any claims that he's a great or even a good artist/creator.
In stating how mediocre these 90's versions were, u're proving my case 4 me.The only way that u can state how improved these characters are is 2 go back 2 the source, however 'lame'.
Essentially, were it not 4 this
[homophobic, talentless fratboy], there would be no Deadpool&Cable 2 improve upon.
I thinl he is more homophobic over the idea that he would retcon Shatterstar's coming out of the closet. He then went on to compare him, Shatterstar, to a Spartan. Thing is, Spartan's were very much homosexual. Heck, being gay was part of their upbringing.
That is why he seems to come across as homophobic. The thing is, it fits with the character of Shatterstar, in some ways, to be gay, as he has not had any relevant relationships with women and his orientation was never mentioned.
he was meaning he was a warrior a fighter and he aint homophobic cos he has gay family,i dnt want it either i dnt want to see 2 superheroes kiss each other. look what happened when nightwing got raped everyone went ape shit
Nightwing was raped by a woman. I am totally against rape of all forms, and find it despicable and horrific. But that is an entirely seperate topic.
This situation is not rape, it's romance. Nobody is forcing these two to be gay, well gay and bisexual. If you don't want to read about a gay superhero, then you don't have to read the book. I don't read anything that I am not interested in, not out of homophobia or any other prejudice, just because I am not interested in that subject or topic.
no this is just another reason for ppl to pick on rob when hes clearly not being homphobic,if i created a warrior character i would be pisses if someone turned him into a homo aswell.
The thing is he compared Shatterstar to Maximus from Gladiator. Maximus is a spartan. Spartans were put into an apprenticeship with another warrior as a young man, and part of their employment required them to be a sexual servant of that warrior. Even, when they were ready to have sex with a woman, the woman's head would first have to be shaved so as to resemble a boy, as they were unable to be intimate with a woman who did not resemble a boy.
was maximus from gladiator gay....no he wsnt,he means warrior...tough he nvr said anything about the lifestyle of a spartan. when u think of spartan u think tough warrior not wierd gay guy tht fights.
We don't know whether Maximus ever goy up to any homosexual activity, and while the film never mentions it, it never rules it out either. He was a Spartan, every Spartan was bisexual.
Liefeld compared Shatterstar to Maximus from Gladiator. Maximus was Spartan, therefore in comparing these two, he just destroyed his argument.
When I think of Spartans I think of their society, which encouraged gay and bisexual activity, as well as producing incredibly tough warriors. One can be tough and gay.
Rob is entitled to want the character to remain heterosexual, but the character was never shown to be either, so the change was 50/50. In the times of Alexander and others being gay was not an issue. Only now is it an issue. Alexander was bisexual. In legends, Achilles was bisexual, and Hector killed his lover, who was male, so Achilles killed Hector for it. There are numerous tough people in history, all real, who happen to be bisexual and warriors.
ur being stupid u know fine well he compared him to maximus cos maximus was a bad guy he was comparing him to maximus cos maximus was a warrior and have u even ever seen gladiator.
Yes, I have seen Gladiator, and one of it's main problems is it is very historically inaccurate. Maximus was a warrior. But he was a Spartan. Spartan's were bisexual and nothing was thought of it at the time. It was as normal to them as it was to the Greeks. Nobody cared. If there had been any mention of his sexual preference before this, then Rob could have complained, but Shatterstar has never mentioned whether he was straight, gay or bisexual.
You've got that wrong, friend. Maximus, from the film Gladiator, was a Spaniard, not a Spartan. Spaniards are from Spain, Spartans are from Sparta, which is in Greece. Homosexuality in the military was a Geecian thing, not as common in Roman times. Not to say it didn't happen, but certainly it was not implied in the film. Basically, you just picked a very bad example of a gay spartan. Try again.
(otherwise I agree with you, shatterstar being gay totally works)
despite lack of proportions and over the top costume designs, liefeld isn't such a bad artist. if I were a kid during the early, I would would've been a fan of the original X-Force. but yeah, its good that he loves his job.
Jim Lee, George Perez, Art Adams, Jim Aparo and so many others have not had training either, but they still worked harder and better to understand the figure, anatomy, perspective and other elements to become great artists.
He gave alot of other artists their big breaks, some, such as Todd Nauck, I admire, so he gets some cred for that.
jim le has so had training,at his ivy league school he took extra curicular art classes plus he went to work art shops all the time and had a personal tutor.
isn't it sad that his early work is so much better than his current. Yeah it was always a little bad, but he seemed like he would grow into a good artist. Instead it's like he's disregarding things like anatomy and layouts on purpose.

It's funny to hear everyone talk smack about Liefeld when he was so popular back in the day. I loved his stuff in high school. Can't believe how much it sucks now. Wow.

im not even saying this as a liefeld hater, but what does a random comic book artist have to do with pant commercials?

Liefeld can't draw anything worth a damn. If he can strike it rich then any artist should be able to. It's sad because he has no reason to improve since dumb fucks keep hiring him and buying his work.
TRE1275 1 year ago 3
@TRE1275 Marvel just won't give him up, he sold a million issues of X-force #1; Marvel hopes it will happen again, but what they don't realize is that everyone must have been on Crack at the time. His latest is deadpool corps. One of the corps members is a dog with a red deadpool costume and his name,...Dogpool LOL.

Liefeld can't draw feet. Ever notice this?
EmperorChupacabra 1 year ago 3
Met him at a comic convention this year. Very nice guy. While other artists were charging $20-$40 to do an original drawing he was doing them for free. I mean the line to see him was huge and most of people wanted a drawing. I got one of Deadpool

Wow, I had no idea Rob was that young when he started. I always imagined him as looking like Comic Book Guy right from the start of his career.

Nightman221k 1 year ago
Rob liefeid was the reason I never got into comics in the 90's. I did not know him or hated him but his art was just terrifying , they were muscle freaks on steroids . looking at his characters I can see why people related better to spider-man and other classic heroes.

Wow, bunch of Liefeld haters. Seems pretty stupid to me. Dude still makes alot of comics and his art has come quite a way. Image United has been great, and his recent Deadpool stuff has been cool as well. And back in the day, all you haters were more than likely loving his stuff.
JacobEliRossSC 2 years ago
It's pretty clear the guy has no formal training. I hate artists who brag about that. They might as well say " I have no idea how to draw because I've never been taught" People hate Liefeld because he flooded the industry with horrible art and Comic book characters. In turn, this inspired people who could not draw to enter the industry and contribute to the crap, and they allowed the stuff to be published.
Jogonpants 2 years ago 8
Exactly. Liefeld's art has improved vastly, and heck, as much as he couldn't draw eyes, Youngblood was fun.

Just imagine had he not come with these characters, nobody would be talkin' about them 2day!!
knight0ut
pmknight12 2 years ago
The original version of Deadpool was lame rip-off of Deathstroke and Cable was a typical no personality XTREME character of the 90s.
Other writers improved these characters and turned them into what people love.
Liefield is a homophobic, talentless person with a frat boy mentality.
JackLeroy 2 years ago 2
I can't speak 2 the homophobia that u alledge, nor do I make any claims that he's a great or even a good artist/creator.
In stating how mediocre these 90's versions were, u're proving my case 4 me.The only way that u can state how improved these characters are is 2 go back 2 the source, however 'lame'.
Essentially, were it not 4 this
[homophobic, talentless fratboy], there would be no Deadpool&Cable 2 improve upon.
k...o..
pmknight12 2 years ago
wow hes homophobic cos he dsnt want his characters to be gay, i dnt either.
JiMMyJaM08061991 2 years ago
I thinl he is more homophobic over the idea that he would retcon Shatterstar's coming out of the closet. He then went on to compare him, Shatterstar, to a Spartan. Thing is, Spartan's were very much homosexual. Heck, being gay was part of their upbringing.
That is why he seems to come across as homophobic. The thing is, it fits with the character of Shatterstar, in some ways, to be gay, as he has not had any relevant relationships with women and his orientation was never mentioned.
yellowcougar18 2 years ago
he was meaning he was a warrior a fighter and he aint homophobic cos he has gay family,i dnt want it either i dnt want to see 2 superheroes kiss each other. look what happened when nightwing got raped everyone went ape shit
JiMMyJaM08061991 2 years ago
Nightwing was raped by a woman. I am totally against rape of all forms, and find it despicable and horrific. But that is an entirely seperate topic.
This situation is not rape, it's romance. Nobody is forcing these two to be gay, well gay and bisexual. If you don't want to read about a gay superhero, then you don't have to read the book. I don't read anything that I am not interested in, not out of homophobia or any other prejudice, just because I am not interested in that subject or topic.
yellowcougar18 2 years ago
no this is just another reason for ppl to pick on rob when hes clearly not being homphobic,if i created a warrior character i would be pisses if someone turned him into a homo aswell.
JiMMyJaM08061991 2 years ago
The thing is he compared Shatterstar to Maximus from Gladiator. Maximus is a spartan. Spartans were put into an apprenticeship with another warrior as a young man, and part of their employment required them to be a sexual servant of that warrior. Even, when they were ready to have sex with a woman, the woman's head would first have to be shaved so as to resemble a boy, as they were unable to be intimate with a woman who did not resemble a boy.
Alexander was a tough warrior, and bisexual.
yellowcougar18 2 years ago
was maximus from gladiator gay....no he wsnt,he means warrior...tough he nvr said anything about the lifestyle of a spartan. when u think of spartan u think tough warrior not wierd gay guy tht fights.
JiMMyJaM08061991 2 years ago
We don't know whether Maximus ever goy up to any homosexual activity, and while the film never mentions it, it never rules it out either. He was a Spartan, every Spartan was bisexual.
Liefeld compared Shatterstar to Maximus from Gladiator. Maximus was Spartan, therefore in comparing these two, he just destroyed his argument.
When I think of Spartans I think of their society, which encouraged gay and bisexual activity, as well as producing incredibly tough warriors. One can be tough and gay.
yellowcougar18 2 years ago
A little continuation of my post above.
There are numerous tough people in history, all real, who happen to be bisexual and warriors.
yellowcougar18 2 years ago
ur being stupid u know fine well he compared him to maximus cos maximus was a bad guy he was comparing him to maximus cos maximus was a warrior and have u even ever seen gladiator.
JiMMyJaM08061991 2 years ago
Yes, I have seen Gladiator, and one of it's main problems is it is very historically inaccurate. Maximus was a warrior. But he was a Spartan. Spartan's were bisexual and nothing was thought of it at the time. It was as normal to them as it was to the Greeks. Nobody cared. If there had been any mention of his sexual preference before this, then Rob could have complained, but Shatterstar has never mentioned whether he was straight, gay or bisexual.
yellowcougar18 2 years ago
he was a sexual he was a warrior who only thought about fighting and he had no human emotiond. he was not gay.
JiMMyJaM08061991 2 years ago
You've got that wrong, friend. Maximus, from the film Gladiator, was a Spaniard, not a Spartan. Spaniards are from Spain, Spartans are from Sparta, which is in Greece. Homosexuality in the military was a Geecian thing, not as common in Roman times. Not to say it didn't happen, but certainly it was not implied in the film. Basically, you just picked a very bad example of a gay spartan. Try again.
(otherwise I agree with you, shatterstar being gay totally works)

But hey, that deserves a tad of merit, I'd say.
...Plus, the guy's real nice. Y'know, sure, he's low-regarded in the comic industry by fans, but I just admire Liefeld's enthusiasm for his job.
LionheartMachinima 2 years ago 9
despite lack of proportions and over the top costume designs, liefeld isn't such a bad artist. if I were a kid during the early, I would would've been a fan of the original X-Force. but yeah, its good that he loves his job.
namelessronin 2 years ago
Jim Lee, George Perez, Art Adams, Jim Aparo and so many others have not had training either, but they still worked harder and better to understand the figure, anatomy, perspective and other elements to become great artists.
He gave alot of other artists their big breaks, some, such as Todd Nauck, I admire, so he gets some cred for that.
yellowcougar18 2 years ago 6
jim le has so had training,at his ivy league school he took extra curicular art classes plus he went to work art shops all the time and had a personal tutor.
JiMMyJaM08061991 2 years ago
True. Tho he seems to be always listed as self taught.
Still, there are quite a number of self taught artists who continue to strive to be better, and Rob Liefeld is not one of them.
