Hitting yourself is to show grief for a lost loved one.

Nabi Muhammad(P.B.U.H.) himself used to beat his chest to show the grief of a loved one. And ever since then it has been a tradition for people to do it, especially during Ashura to grieve over the great tragedy that has happened in Karbala. And to feel the pain of Imam Hussein(A.S.).

Don't talk about something that you know absolutely nothing about.

The problem here is this practice of hitting yourself and screaming is not part of the sunnah, it is bidah. So it is outside of Islam. When Hamza died in the battle of badr did the Prophet saw scream and wail and hit himself. NO, he wept silently, and they could tell he was crying b/c his shoulders were shaking.
