I'm Canadian and I admit the natives here, at least in Alberta, are considered second-rate citizens. This is because the only time most people see the natives, they are usually drunk, stoned, homeless, or all of the above. Now obviously not all natives fall under this category, but that's how most people view them. A sad reality. Indian reserves aren't helping anything either. Not sure what kind of solution will truly help them, but throwing more money at the problem hasn't helped.
Bottom line is, NOBODY deserves to be treated that way. The gov't apology is a start, but it's not nearly enough. What is enough? I have no idea. I just hope they can move on and, as a people, work to dispel the idea that they are all a bunch of lowlifes. I really want to see them turn it around.

im sorry, but "colonial history" will show that natives and europeans settlers in canada actually got along quite well for most of their 400+ years of relations.

I'm Canadian and I admit the natives here, at least in Alberta, are considered second-rate citizens. This is because the only time most people see the natives, they are usually drunk, stoned, homeless, or all of the above. Now obviously not all natives fall under this category, but that's how most people view them. A sad reality. Indian reserves aren't helping anything either. Not sure what kind of solution will truly help them, but throwing more money at the problem hasn't helped.

Bottom line is, NOBODY deserves to be treated that way. The gov't apology is a start, but it's not nearly enough. What is enough? I have no idea. I just hope they can move on and, as a people, work to dispel the idea that they are all a bunch of lowlifes. I really want to see them turn it around.

Canada will never be able to undo this wrong, but it is important to keep shedding light on it's biggest past mistake. The prime minister's apology was delayed but it was an apology nonetheless. there is no "native way of life." from the moment european arrived the natives have wanted their lifestyle - their guns, booze, pots and pans, etc.
natives are free to back to living in the bush hunting with bow and arrows. most, however, prefer the european way of life, it would seem
immigration is a fact of life. everyone should be free to live anywhere.
