Now THAT is the way a Porsche should sound! Beautiful car! I hope to one day own a Porsche, but it not be anything newer than a 993. I think the SCs, 3.2 Carreras, and 930 Turbos are the ones that best define the 911. It was a sad day when they started making water cooled 911s, that sound is AMAZING!!
You are right that Porsche exhaust rarely sounds good in a parking lot lol.
IMHO, far too many American V8's sound good revving but are dogs (low end torque but no balls above 3-4000 rpms) because of loud exhaust rather than "tuned for power" exhaust. I drive a Mustang GT so I'm not dogging American V8's, just a large number of their owners.
Exhaust for free flow at high rpms usually doesn't sound great unless under load. Just MHO :)
Yes, MoeschenG, SC does in fact stand for Super Carrera. The breathy whine you're hearing, khenry1991, is not the result of a supercharger. It is actually characteristic of all air-cooled 911 models, produced by the belt-driven cooling fan and amplified by resonance from the cooling shroud and cylinder head cooling fins.
As an owner of a 1980 911SC special Weissach edition and avid lover of classic Porsche, I did quite the research and found that nobody could actually prove that SC stands for Super Carrera, yet certain hints along the way point to a "Super Carrera" origin. Either way, I've always considered the SC to stand for Super Carrera, especially standing as the predecessor to the "911 Turbo Carrera" (1974 introduced the 911 Turbo, or 930 in North America) wasnt till later were they called Turbo Carreras!
Lovely! Makes me miss my Carrera 3.2 with backdated RS 2.7 style exhaust that I had for 7 years. Nothing sounds sweeter to me than that engine sound, especially at full acceleration above 4500 rpms. That roar was beautiful, made all the little hairs on my arms stand up =) Oh boy I miss it.....
I am seriously impressed.I am a 944 owner and road runner, your 911 sounds like a ghost.Just screaming to scare the shit out of someone.

Beautiful car! I always loved the look of the Porsche 911. I definitely prefer the older style to the newer style of Porsche.

Seriously? My vacuum cleaner is louder.
Need a long tubed corvette if you want to hear how a car's exhaust should sound.
Or a ferrari 355, porsches, while sexy and powerful cars, just sound terrible.
Only straight pipe track porsches make any decent noise...

Listen to it idle and rev under load.

All 911's have that sound normally aspirated. It is characteristic of this breed.

At high rev's, sounds to have a 'purer', more Classic-Sports-Car sound than my 3.3 turbo - and admitting that doesn't make me happy! ;o)
Have you tuned it up? (Or is it still around the 208bhp it had when it left the factory in Zuffenhausen?)
