  • Boy, him and now Chailly with the Gewandhaus, what power houses. Carlos Kleiber VPO is the only really great one beside these TWO. Thanks for posting it...

  • When Paavo did this with the Cincinnati Symphony Orchestra it was just absolutely earth shatteringly amazing. What a brilliant musical mind.

  • THIS GOES DIRECTLY IN MY FAV LIST... CONDUCTING IS MORE THAN PERFECT...

  • Beyond Abbado, Rattle, Gardiner. The new generation rediscovers Beethoven again. And again. This is tops today for the Fifth. The strings are vibrato-less, as with Norrington.

  • conductor number 1 :)

  • Interesting interpretation in the first measure... I think I like this one better than the traditional interpretation! It really seems as if death were about to knock down your door

  • This conductor is going to die of 1) stroke, 2) cardiac arrest, 3) Baton through the eye, while conducting. SO INTENSE.

  • very good, a bit fast for my liking, but great playing :)

  • @SchwarzeDose21 I was thinking the exact same thing. He is super-controlled and the speed seems to be as meaningful as anything.

  • BRAVO !

  • Awesome rendition... the composer seems like a real cool guy with a great sense of humor and musicality. Also, the orchestra plays with expression, fluidity and skill.

  • The conductor is Paavo Järvi

  • The bassoon entrance at 5:00 was just sublime.

  • at 7:10 the face of the conductor showed that he expected an applause

  • it is am masing how the song gos for hard core then to like a lulubye

  • been checking out several versions of this. normally i despise the conductors, but this guy has an efficient non-control-freak style i really dig. surprised after watching to see some criticism of him. seems like a soul boy to me, very much letting the players do their thing and staying out of the way, while he also quite obviously savors the performance. like it.

  • WHO DARED TO DISLIKE BEETHOVEN>??!!! beware of all his fans! this is a very good interpretation

  • the beginning should of been longer tho

  • insuperable

  • Such a terrible cut! Awesome playing though. Love the energy from this group.

  • Paavo's faces... they are soo epic!

i am convinced if someone was in front of that baton of his, he would accidentally gut them.

  • all you people criticizing the conductor, if "lovely Ludwig van" was conducting, he'd be 10 times crazier than this conductor. he'd be "stabbing" people left and right with his baton

  • The second movement is so majestic!

  • Best tempo ever.

  • 7:10 The conductor is satisfied and marveled !

  • 5 peoples who watched this video are neo nazis metalist

  • why do the conductor ALWAYS look pissed?

  • @sweden360

check you movement 3 of symphony 3 and youll see him happy.

  • 4:31 - 4:44 is my fav bit :)

  • LOL the Composer looked like he wanted to stab some 1 with that stick lol

  • @MattTheManc1 You meant conductor :)

  • @Nadirion1

To be fair, is it really that hard to imagine Beethoven wanting to stab someone with a stick?

  • @MattTheManc1 Conductor

  • huevos

  • Fantastic!

And if it seems speedy that is probably because few people (although more these days) do Beethoven's requested metronome. I like it - you hear the longer phrases clearly.

  • I love the orchestra. so damn good and can play this fast!!

However, I agree with one of the previous comments, some places sound a little bit harsh, and on the whole it is slightly too speedy....

It seems like if everyone can enjoy the entire harmony and all the dissonances a little bit more, it will bring out the feeling of more emotional conflict, more suffering and struggling. It is sounding too victorious now. ; )

  • 6:16 to 6:50 is my favorite part. (though I remember the last "dun dun duuuun" being longer and more drawn out.

    That conductor is a hoot ! :P

  • too fast

  • this is incredible. the way he performs! its just too good.

  • There are two grouops of people in the world: oral and anal. Oral ones, look forward and forgive, anal ones, look at the back (whoever's) and wait for mistakes to point them out (nothing to do with policemen, or police-women).

  • taken at a quick tempo but still great interpretation !

  • I love this mov, but not this version :P way too speedy..

  • Interesting that on the Furtwangler videos no mentions Jarvi, seems he does not have the following that the greatest conductors have. But we must acknowledge his genius, courage and originality. It is right to compare him to the greatest. He is there, if not for his breathtaking risks, but also for the monumentality of his performance. we should abstain from ridiculing each other, but bring out the best in us all, through a vision of genius. Its a great, very great performance. Lets enjoy.

  • Amazing!

  • OOOOOPS! A mistake - listen at 2:56!

    Wow! I'm Good!

  • Lol even the greatest orchestras make mistakes. That doesn't take away anything from such a great performance.

  • Great orchestras make mistakes, but not the greatest orchestra. That is what makes a great orchestra the greatest.

P.S. Personally, I am very familiar with concept of greatness so I speak with firsthand knowledge.

  • Have fun with your "firsthand knowledge", concept and definition of greatness.

  • Can't hear any mistake there.

  • Listen to the last note before the break. It is as obvious as nose on your face!

  • what mistake !!!!

no you are not good :)

i have heard like 10 times at 2:56 , and its just the sound of the instrument getting hit by the player , his fingers or his stick.

if you listen carefully for the entire video, you can hear the same sound repeats few others times. no mistakes

  • Comment removed

  • is also 4:15 a mistake ??

  • 4:15 - not a mistake.

2:58 - a mistake. (compare to 1:35. Your earlier "excuses" are lame).

You are either not a musician, or a bad one.

I, by contrast, have an ear for music for I am, Your Drummer Supreme.

  • I should think that you are the bad musician, because you bother about such peanuts. You're right, it was a mistake, but who the hell cares. It was a live recording, not a studio production. What counts is the musicality not the number of mistakes. As a professional you should know that...

  • You are guilty of what you accuse others of. If this is such "peanuts" why are you writing about it. Why do you "care" writing about this? You whole line of thought undercuts the very point you were trying to make. But I am a big enough person to over look it. Have a nice day!

  • Oh, please, stop thinking you're so good, these two places are'nt supposed to sound the same, it isn't supposed to be the same tune! You obviously have never seen the sheet music or even heard this piece more than in cartoons. So much for your "ear for music". Sorry, don't want to be rude but you are really annoying!

  • He's good but somehow it sounds rather cold.

  • Really impressive

  • one fo the best performances ever!

    Bravo Paavo, Bravo Deutsch Kammerphilharmonie!

    We love you!

  • Oh, Nazi? Ok, they can be nazi, but they're great musicians!

  • @whiterottenrabbit: Daß die größten geistigen Tiefflieger ihre Dummheit auch noch öffentlich machen müssen, ist schon nahezu unerträglich.....

  • @blechmusik

    Tja, willkommen im Internet!

  • 6:15, That part is just so majestic!

  • thanks for uploading, fantastic concert, i have a question tho, i'm not a german speaker, but do they call their philharmonic "kammerphilharmonic" ? wat is "kammer" ? fantastic tho, excellent concert

  • a chamber... ;-)

  • "kammer" in this context means that it is a small orchester, playing e.g. in smaller concert halls.

  • great tempo.

    the fermata's could be longer.

  • long fermata is too much, it isn't so long note. People are just so used to the stretched out versions. If Beethoven would have wanted he'd have wrote a longer note there (I think)

  • Absolutely!

  • Beautiful! Awesome.

  • Beethoven is amazing, but i dont like this wersion!!!

  • oh no...

  • a wonderful, rhythmical account.

  • This orchestra is so amazing, so as the conductor.

  • hey i all ways was think why are they all ways reading the music dont they no the song. sry for the stupid question.

  • It's not a stupid question.

Classical music is a lot less repetitive than pop, where you just have the same chords repeated over and over. The pieces of music are normally a lot longer, too. Also, the person who writes the music puts quite detailed instructions in, and it's difficult to remember every one.

When it's just one musician performing they will often not have music. Same if their part is the main one. (There isn't really a main instrument in this, but in some pieces there is.)

  • WORLD CLASS!

  • best beethoven I've heard

  • Yeah im in high school and my orchestra cant seem to figure out the rythym to mov 1 and it makes me so mad

  • al inizio sembrava moscia... invece col passare del tempo prende corpo!! è veramente un direttore che ha in mano questa orchestra.. ripeto la orchestra come istrumento come colore... è una delizia ascoltarli...

  • This performance is as good as it gets!

  • He is so sexy look at those faces he makes! The whole orchestra feels that shit. This is definitely the rythm of LVB"s love makin!

  • Bravo Paavo!!
