Boy, him and now Chailly with the Gewandhaus, what power houses. Carlos Kleiber VPO is the only really great one beside these TWO. Thanks for posting it...
Beyond Abbado, Rattle, Gardiner. The new generation rediscovers Beethoven again. And again. This is tops today for the Fifth. The strings are vibrato-less, as with Norrington.
Interesting interpretation in the first measure... I think I like this one better than the traditional interpretation! It really seems as if death were about to knock down your door
Awesome rendition... the composer seems like a real cool guy with a great sense of humor and musicality. Also, the orchestra plays with expression, fluidity and skill.
been checking out several versions of this. normally i despise the conductors, but this guy has an efficient non-control-freak style i really dig. surprised after watching to see some criticism of him. seems like a soul boy to me, very much letting the players do their thing and staying out of the way, while he also quite obviously savors the performance. like it.
all you people criticizing the conductor, if "lovely Ludwig van" was conducting, he'd be 10 times crazier than this conductor. he'd be "stabbing" people left and right with his baton
And if it seems speedy that is probably because few people (although more these days) do Beethoven's requested metronome. I like it - you hear the longer phrases clearly.
I love the orchestra. so damn good and can play this fast!!
However, I agree with one of the previous comments, some places sound a little bit harsh, and on the whole it is slightly too speedy....
It seems like if everyone can enjoy the entire harmony and all the dissonances a little bit more, it will bring out the feeling of more emotional conflict, more suffering and struggling. It is sounding too victorious now. ; )
There are two grouops of people in the world: oral and anal. Oral ones, look forward and forgive, anal ones, look at the back (whoever's) and wait for mistakes to point them out (nothing to do with policemen, or police-women).
Interesting that on the Furtwangler videos no mentions Jarvi, seems he does not have the following that the greatest conductors have. But we must acknowledge his genius, courage and originality. It is right to compare him to the greatest. He is there, if not for his breathtaking risks, but also for the monumentality of his performance. we should abstain from ridiculing each other, but bring out the best in us all, through a vision of genius. Its a great, very great performance. Lets enjoy.
I should think that you are the bad musician, because you bother about such peanuts. You're right, it was a mistake, but who the hell cares. It was a live recording, not a studio production. What counts is the musicality not the number of mistakes. As a professional you should know that...
You are guilty of what you accuse others of. If this is such "peanuts" why are you writing about it. Why do you "care" writing about this? You whole line of thought undercuts the very point you were trying to make. But I am a big enough person to over look it. Have a nice day!
Oh, please, stop thinking you're so good, these two places are'nt supposed to sound the same, it isn't supposed to be the same tune! You obviously have never seen the sheet music or even heard this piece more than in cartoons. So much for your "ear for music". Sorry, don't want to be rude but you are really annoying!
thanks for uploading, fantastic concert, i have a question tho, i'm not a german speaker, but do they call their philharmonic "kammerphilharmonic" ? wat is "kammer" ? fantastic tho, excellent concert
long fermata is too much, it isn't so long note. People are just so used to the stretched out versions. If Beethoven would have wanted he'd have wrote a longer note there (I think)
Classical music is a lot less repetitive than pop, where you just have the same chords repeated over and over. The pieces of music are normally a lot longer, too. Also, the person who writes the music puts quite detailed instructions in, and it's difficult to remember every one.

This conductor is going to die of 1) stroke, 2) cardiac arrest, 3) Baton through the eye, while conducting. SO INTENSE.

Wow! I'm Good!
DrummerSupreme 2 years ago
Lol even the greatest orchestras make mistakes. That doesn't take away anything from such a great performance.
Apalexpe 2 years ago
Great orchestras make mistakes, but not the greatest orchestra. That is what makes a great orchestra the greatest.
P.S. Personally, I am very familiar with concept of greatness so I speak with firsthand knowledge.
DrummerSupreme 2 years ago
Have fun with your "firsthand knowledge", concept and definition of greatness.

Listen to the last note before the break. It is as obvious as nose on your face!
DrummerSupreme 2 years ago
what mistake !!!!
no you are not good :)
i have heard like 10 times at 2:56 , and its just the sound of the instrument getting hit by the player , his fingers or his stick.
if you listen carefully for the entire video, you can hear the same sound repeats few others times. no mistakes

4:15 - not a mistake.
2:58 - a mistake. (compare to 1:35. Your earlier "excuses" are lame).
You are either not a musician, or a bad one.
