Dave Wakeling (lead vocals) and Andy Cox (lead guitar) were big Flaming Groovies fans. This song sounds very similar to 'Shake some Action' by The Flaming Groovies and I believe it was one of the very first songs they wrote together before The Beat was fully formed.
@trickcigar All time favorite Beat tune, incredibly simple hook, but insanely catchy Can't really figure out what Dave is doing on the rhythm part- I know the song's in A, but even allowing for a left-handed player it doesn't look quite right in the video. Know he did some stuff with open tunings, maybe this is one of those. "Shake Some Action?" Love the Groovies, but I don't hear that.
@Nyquilcoma It looks like when he turned the right-handed guitar upside-down, he didn't bother to change the strings around, and just learned the chords backwards. My cousin's a lefty who plays a right-hand guitar, and he did the same thing, and that's what it looks like.
Saw Dave on the 50 bus in kings heath back in 1980 and he signed my mates bag for her, he must'v been visiting his folks as they lived on the same road as me, he was so fkin cool.
Saw these live at the Victoria Hall Stoke-on trent UK, about 1979/ 1980 time. They were amazing. Forget all the big name bands. The Beat are great, value for money live act. Not like todays crap....
Ranking Roger has apparently contributed to Neville Staple's biography "Original Rude Boy" coming out in April - just in time for the Specials reunion tour. Apparently a real page turner. Been waiting ages for a good book on 2Tone and ska - hopefully this is it. You can ask for a copy on Waterstone's website - just put in my request.
hey mike, guessing you were born in 70, same as myself. The best song the Beat ever did. Great clip. thanx for the post. takes me back to being 9/11 year old. love this shit
