it is just ridiculous that they do not fix that airport, they can either lower that hill or the can extend the runway into the water built on pilars. other countries would had fixed this airport long time ago. Come on St. Barts, make this a better and safer airport.
This is how they land now, about ten years ago (before someone crashed) the landing there was different. The would fly at a maintained altitude then go almost straight down the mountain to the tarmac. It was a verrry scarry landing. Now as you see in the video they come in higher and at an angle from far away, and they don't do a nose dive like they used to.
I remember having to make a stop at st barths before going to statia to drop off a few ppl. The landing scared me a lil cuz we flew over a mountain, then quickly nosed down to the landing strip. Cool experience. Scarier than taking off the landing strip on saba.
how is it not difficult. regular descent rate is around 10 degrees and this approach is about 30 degrees is what i heard. this is one of the hardest landings out there.
Compared to a game called FS2004 or FSX i love the scenery , one thing i love about flying in real-life , you get the ultimate scenery , and NO LAG :D
.... but unlike a simulator , theres no second chance for a big screw up :(
the French aviation authorities require that a special permit be issued to any pilot who intends to land in St. Barts. Those planning to land in St Barts will have to land in Grand Case, French St Martin, first, in order to get their qualification. St Barts Control tower (Telephone: 590 590 27 65 33 - Fax: 590 590 27 98 96 ) will tell you how to contact a French instructor for certification. It takes a couple of hours, and includes touch-and-go in both directions.
Once in a long while there is. My friend is fireman at the airport and he had to deal with a crash there a few years back, but nothing has happened since then as far as I know.
oops, I didnt know that you had to have a license. I flew to st. maarten a few years back in a 182 and then took a short trip to barts, i just used a huge forward slip.
@zimwrathnibs I know it look high inside the plane but trust me it wasnt high, normal approach height, also if u look at it carefully there is a high hill before the runway so in order to not crash the pilot had to keep a safe distance then decrease its height right away before the runway began. Need skills to land at these airports, the plane was small so it is easier to land these type of planes but when it comes to planes like AirbusA330 very dangerous and require lot of skills and experience
@zimwrathnibs Since your comment was written 2 years ago I assume you know more now. But anyways, the approach in the video was normal. The pilots have to go high on app. becuase there is a hill you have to fly over before landing.
@Deltapilot96 Local lore is that an Australian bush pilot first attempted it and showed that it could be done. It is s steeper approach than normal. But it is not a completely unusual way to land. When I flew to a remote community in Arnhemland in Australia, the pilot of the little plane seem to be nosing down straight into the near end of the runway like he was going to plant the plane in the ground. Then he pulled out at the last minute and touched down perfectly on the dirt airstrip.
LOL i saw the skid marks from that twin engine that overshot into the sand.

if you call that normal, I call you an extraordinary good pilot. I could never do that without special training. At least I am impressed.

there was a crash there recently. a plane overshoot the runway and ended up at the beach
kyotoair 2 years ago
@joshwinz if you watch airboyd's plane crash at st barts their is a plane that overuns the runway onto the beach but it's hardly a crash.

A piper aztec beached it on an attempt at rwy 10 about two weeks ago.

high is the correct way to approach st barths, otherwise you wont se shit and wont clear the hill
neper1982 3 years ago
dude, u were way to high man..or was that because of how the camera was mounted?
zimwrathnibs 3 years ago
I was just holding the camera, sitting in the seat behind the pilot. Unlike my other aerial videos, this one is in a real plane...
gwdidg 3 years ago
they need to be that high so they can clear the hill, also these island hoppers are meant for that kind of change in altitude
Dcomp29 2 years ago
Certainly appears so to me.

Is this license headed by the words "Certified Insane" ?
