Also to commit genocide you have to wipe out the people aswell as their culture (language, literature, art etc). William never commited genocide when he conquered England because the Normans were vastly outnumbered and because the married the local population it ment their children and their descendents would have Englash and Norman ancestry. Plus Anglo-Saon literature like Beowulf and the Anglo-Saxon chronicles were still being written and told as stories after the conquest...
In the end the Normans (and French people who came to England under the first Plantagenet kings) all mixed with the local population and adopted the English language so i wouldn't say people are still suffering today. Infact relations between Anglo-Normans and Anglo-Saxons had vastly improved by the reign of Henry I (not just because of marriage and adopting each others culture but also because Henry married Edith and united the houses of Normandy and Wessex together).
Quite a shame that none of the great English poets did use the great feud of Harold and Guilliame for the English throne as a template for one of their works! Shakespeare could have written an excellent tragedy like Richard II, King John or Henry IV Part I about it also Marlowe who shaped the downfall of Edward II so well poetically and so Byron, who made some Norman fuss with his Manfred; also the lazy Milton could have made an English epic instead of his disputable bible fuss.
This Documentary is pro William apologistic propaganda that obscures the facts as they have been thus far established. Give us some truth. Harold was the elected true King of the Saxons and he was brutally murdered by a despotic tyrant. The Saxon people were then enslaved for which they still suffer to this day. William was also lucky to beat Harold. Harold went down fighting in the front ranks with his men. William died a fat hated despot. Truth will out. Don't believe the distortions.
@sugarraygras pfff lucky? i like the Anglo-Saxons, English history & their culture but its no propoganda or exageration to say the Normans were some of the best Warriors of the medieval, anyone will tell u that, they won many great battles over formidable enemies, and the truth is they deserve more credit in terms of military success. What lucky? I sympatize with the British but by saying the Normans were lucky is not a 'fact'. I think both Saxons & Normans had their good & bad & i respect both.
Guilliame (William) was Norman....descendant of the Norsemen from lower scandinavia and he conquered his cousins the descendants of the Angles. Jutes, Saxons, and Norsemen who ruled Angleland (Mercia/Wessex/Northumbria etc) who were the last 'English' (ie Anglish) kings....there has never been another English Monarch nor has there been a pure Eng;ishman since !!! You are ALL mongrels......
@macbrack04 Doesnt make wrong right, or down up. Genocide was commited by William against the resident race of people. Proposed shared heritage makes no difference. Harold should be the hero of this peroid for his fairness as well as his obvious strength. William was an evil man. Why worship him now, when at his own funeral his best deserted him and stole the rings from his dead fingers. Harold however was worshipped
... And Anglo-Saxon arquitechture (mainly churches) still stand today.
English culture never ended during the conquest it merely changed.
