  • she had some rought time beeing scorn by onassis. but what a voice.

  • This is indeed what is meant by the term DIVA.

  • im so devastated she is no longer here but i am sooo very glad she lived in an age where future generations are able to enjoy her greatness through videos and recordings.

  • Maria Callas did this last tour to help di Stefano who needed money for a sick daughter. To convince her, he became her lover... and dropped her after the tour. Even with her first husband, she had wanted to stop singing and have children and enjoy life. But he kept on signing contracts. She had a good love life with Onassis (even after Jackie Kennedy) and I am happy for her.

  • I think it's important to remember that nobody forced Maria Callas to give up singing and go with Onassis. Most professional opera singers understand that you have to keep singing in order to keep your voice in good condition. Maria Callas took a very long break from opera, performing only sporadically, and then found that her voice was not what it had been. She admitted as much herself. The performance here demonstrates this clearly. Her excellent musicianship still shines through however.

  • ich wünschte, ich hätte sie EINMAL gesehen...

i wish, i've seen her ONCE.....

  • She is incredible a true DIVA !

  • I love Maria Callas but i think Leyla Gencer is the best Santuzza ever.

  • I am not much into classical music, but because I love music within further boundaries and shades, there is something about Her, an aura, I do not know, possibly Her extraordinary sensitivity, some hunger for Love and I suppose she suffered a lot, could not fulfill her natural need... and sadly died because her heart was broken, such a wonderful Voice and Passion, I ma full of respect to Maria. Thank you for every note you sang...

  • Bellissimo, grazie mille! :)

    Meraviglioso!

  • I strongly believe that with a better caring of her voice during and after the S.O.B. Onassis era, she could have singing at her prime again... however, at that time she was still much better than the rest, pure, heartbreaking, delightful, diva...

  • If you compare this to the 1973 London Recital, you can see MUCH vocal/technical improvement (open voyels, breath sustaining). We all know she was far from her best here, but trying to keep up, and did all she could. Her mind just wasnt there anymore... Her personification though, is untouchable and for this only she is my favorite Santuzza. Brava Callas

  • Even at this stage in her career though many could beat her vocally at this point dramatically she remained untouched. To this day.

  • amazing beauty..even until this age

  • She said in an interview she was using the tours to rebuild her voice as nothing does it better than live performing. It took enormous courage! Here at the end of the tour we hear many of the earlier issues are improved upon. She was one of the hardest workers in opera, always giving her all! A blazing comet! Gone to soon. Oh, and iriisblue, you are an ignorant douche bag!

  • No-one, absolutely!, NO-ONE, was or ever will be as good Callas the voice, or Maria the Woman, a fantastic duo!

  • Best soprano ever!!!!!

  • I enjoy Fiorenza Cossotto a bit more than Callas, but she is still a tremendous singer.

  • @vivegedda Callas's voice was and remains controversial; it bothered and disturbed as many as it thrilled and inspired others. The combination of size, weight, range and agility was a source of amazement to Callas's own contemporaries. Grace Bumbry states, "If I followed the musical score when she was singing, I would see every tempo marking, every dynamic marking, everything being adhered to, and at the same time, it was not antiseptic; it was something that was very beautiful and moving.

  • @vivegedda

    ;)

  • @schambi333 me too, i really don't like her voice but her singing expression is overwhelming.

  • Povera Maria .... commovente

  • i just respect this last tour with Di Stefano.

  • i am really NOT a fan of her but this makes me cry!!

  • Her very last performances. Some things revealed a frayed voice, but this is still utter perfection.

  • Brava Callas! Brava Maria!

  • CLASS LUXURY VOICE FOR ETERNITY

  • La Divina

  • Déesse.... <3

  • dang. shes GOOOD.

  • @iriisblue This was 3 yrs before her death and I think she sounds beautiful!

  • @iriisblue Might you die???

  • @iriisblue you are a douche bag ....

  • @iriisblue I APOLOGIZE!!! (i meant to say you are an ignorant douche-bag...sorry)

  • mind-boggling!

  • At this stage of her life- there are so many "songs" that would have been perfect for her. Why just arias?

  • @StuartLou I'll take whatever.

  • La voce suona così vuota e la donna sembra così triste. Ma che fuoco, che fraseggio, che occhi! E' la callas, sempre.

  • I can't believe this performance is only 2 years prior to her death ! God must have missed her voice !

  • woman?! she's a goddess.

  • Rita Gorr, 1962, Angel Records:

    watch?v=dPge6MulS6w

    thanks and regards

  • I checked out her performance when she was younger. your right. Incredible

  • i absolutely love her voice and everything about her.

may the memory of her live forever.

  • Oh God what a voice...i love it.....

  • jesus ,if this was past her prime, i wonder what she sounded like when she was younger live.

  • @alexaadap I asked the same question. Someone posted that they heard her live at La Scala, 6 times. They said she was so great it was, " Of Mythology ". It's only my .02c but I think Callas in her prime was even better than we all think she was. We read here and there about her, we listen to her on Youtube, etc. I'm thinking that she was in fact devastating, beyond belief.

  • @alexaadap

I know, right? I want this voice she has during this performance--it is more masterful than 99.9% of ppl singing today.

But, she sounded beyond belief and otherwordly when she was younger. Her voice was the definition of operatic mastery.

  • Courageous.

No, she was past her prime...Voice, opera is percect meium as it is in itself a tragic art form..As ballet one passes their prime and loses their instrument forever.

What is so beautiful is the courage of an old warrior still fighting. A quality most only dream of.

    Nothing but respect

  • This is great.

    Thanks!

She really wanted to start singing again.

Sad to think that she was gone from this world just 3 years later.

  • Es la mejor y punto

  • Bravo Tulio Serafin.

  • OH MY GOD :O Amazing...

  • Maria Callas was bar none the best!!

  • I thought she must've been working on her vioce. She was actually in good status in this footage. Although she was definite past her prime the musicality and quality was still there. She is the best prima donna ever.

  • @jackieshenkai Have you heard her last recording? She was accompaying herself singing and playing Ah, perfido. It was one of her best singing, if not her best.

  • @ciociosan NO! I didn't realise she was accompanying herself - can you post it?

  • @ciociosan It's not self accompanied, it's with Jeffrey Tate, now Sir Jeffrey. [I know because I asked him.]

  • @Buondelmonte123 According to "The Unknown Callas" and the CD cover, it was La Divina herself playing.

    Just sayin.

  • The greatest soprano ever! No question, no doubt... even here in her last performance she is better than anybody!

    La Divina!

  • All that smiling and frontal singing... poor thing. She really got off the right path independently from her personal life..

  • The best

  • She looks like a Greek goddess and sounds magnificent. No it's not the voice from the 50's and 60's, but OMG, what a presence. I am once again overwhelmed by the greatness of La Callas.

  • Wow so this is the infamous Tokyo Concert of '74, the last time Callas sang opera in public. I've heard her voice was in terrible condition but I just saw this and I don't agree. The technique is there, the voice is there, it's still Maria Callas. I thought she was wonderful. I've heard YOUNGER sopranos today (some who are big names I won't mention who can't sing half as good as she did right here.

  • Callas is the greatest soprano of post-WW2 time, there is no doubt. In the 50's she reached human genius with an incomparable voice. But this is not Maria Callas. In this concert her voice is destroyed and this performance is painful to hear.

  • in that time her voice wasn't at the best condition, but even then no one can be compare to her!!!!! we adore you, just simple as that....

    rest in peace...

    with love Greece

  • everytime i listen to this aria "voi lo sapette" the only one name who has on her own, callas.

  • yes, I like her

  • But,... is there another soprano than Maria??

  • Callas is divine, beyond comparison... no question. The best!

  • I like María Callas...me encaaaanta María Callas...qué voz más increíble...

  • the BEST...the BEST, and the BEST

  • piano player needs to wake up. You are playing with Callas!

  • three years before her death..she is still thrilling and incredible!

  • i love this woman.......

  • Thanks for posting.

  • Sei un angelo!

  • Un vrai bijou!

  • The best soprano ever!

  • Thanks for posting!

  • Spectacular performance.

  • Callas, simply I love her!

  • Callas forever!

  • horrible. du fer rouillé

  • In her glory days, it's quite puzzling to compare Maria with anyone. She has a beautiful voice, absolute perfect pitch and intelligence. The best soprano ever!

  • elle ne chante pas, elle crie.

  • Spectacular performance.

  • She's a master of the role that acts and sings far superior to anyone.

  • I was thinking exactly the same thing.

  • She attained it and she deserves recognition.

  • Callas forever!

  • Guys I am 55 years old and still sing very well.

  • Graet Callas

  • She is wonderful!!!!!! She sings perfectly well!!!!!!!!

  • honestly, could someone take a minute and explain to me why and were in the video is her voice terrible / bad?

i am no opera expert, but i find her voice quite emotive, powerful and nice (more than a lot of the contemporary singers today).

  • @rin4ldo Hi. I'm a huge Maria Callas fan. I think she was just about the greatest singer of the last century. This performance breaks my heart. Her voice is in absolute tatters. The tone is worn, her vibrato is about of control and she's had to drag her chest voice up much higher than it should ever go. However, the drama and the true meaning of the music has perhaps never been clearer. Listen to her 20 years before this and you will get both her voice in pristine condition and the drama.

  • @GoBogi

OK but you have to remember that here she`s around 50 years old

  • 51 exactly

  • @CelineFascinated well, at 50 most singers are still in their best.

For Callas the reasons of her decline have nothing to do with age, as she already was beginnign to have vocal problems in her late 30s.

  • You are right. Some singers actually blame Maria's weight loss during the 50's as the main reason of her vocal decline. It made sense since Maria learned to use her body when she was physically stronger but the body got weak and it could not sustain the tension and the strength the heavy roles needed. It's sad because Maria never felt comfortable with her body before becoming thin. "Callas" needed the voice, the look and perhaps the glamour but "Maria" got lost somewhere.

  • @belmanotre LOL! Nice joke!

  • Maria Callas is epic, but her hair looks like Alien.

  • ahahaah, poor callas!

    she's ever great

  • haha ok this coup was in fashion this time...

  • Congrats! You and Neanderthangirl must have the same undeveloped brain being that you copy each others' EXACT nonsense. Don't have children.

  • you are so immature....you cant judge her on this performance...she was up in age and this was also shortly before she died...you cant say shit about her early recordings...jackass

  • Callas is so magnificent. Netrebko is a

    SOUBRETTE compared to La Divina.

  • Macht aber nur etwa 30% des Gesamtrepertoires aus. Für 70% Opern war Callas nur zweitklassig.

  • GAndoredo, does it eat at your guts knowing your cousin Annushka, no matter how cute, no matter how much money she makes, no matter how popular, will never outdo Maria. No matter how long she sings Annushka will never be known as La Divina. No matter how much money she makes, Annushka will never be proclaimed, " THE GREATEST SOPRANO OF ALL TIME " !!!!!! HA! HA! Maria still levels the competition........ from the grave!!!!!! SFOGATO! SFOGATO!! SFOGATO!!!! HA!HA!HA!HA!HA!

  • @gandor1337

italian opera is VERY VERY VERY popular in Germany!!!!!!!!!

  • The BBC, and Times UK, know of what they speak....The Greatest Soprano Of All Time!!!

  • superb la Callas, as usual....

obviously it's not her same voice than in the 50s but it's the same heart, the same passion, the same "artistry"

  • Every witches lives forever....... especially greek!!!

  • HAS THIS GREEK GODDESS EVER RECODED GOUNOD's AVE MARIA

  • GREEK GODESS,LIVES FOR EVER!!!!

  • fare well or

    be quiet for once!

    Will you stop it!

  • Thanks for your beautifull singing on all the recordings of your farewell-tour. I listen to it regularly, so much hearth in the songs.

    Thank you for your gift

    RIP

  • Prachtige stem Maria.

  • She has already promoted. It is just the favour to you, mockers.

  • Their is nothing of ridicule. Even this is unattainable for many.

  • RIP Maria!

  • Maria giving her whole heart to music as always. So many years after her time we are still grateful!

  • Rest in peace Maria!

  • Maria!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • rest in peace

  • Jamais uma voz igual, impossivel!!!!

  • Sad to read such a language and way to discuss about something so great as Opera. respect an
