Ah, O Nata Lux is my favorite from this piece. I have to hold back tears each time I hear or sing it, even up on stage! It relaxes the soul, and mysteriously and wonderfully makes my heart ache as well.
Can't comment enough on how moving and powerful the "O Nata Lux" speaks to me. The most powerful portions of the work that grabs me the most is the part where the chorus bursts heavenly into "Dignare Clemens Supplicum." Which is at about 0:26, 1:11, and 3:32. 3:52 is so tearjerking!
Very Atmospheric And Angelic. "O Nata Lux" has to be the most spellbinding and powerful choral exerpt from the "Lux." A piece that will bring you to your knees to first time you hear it! Spirtually uplifting and powerful. Having sung this piece, this requires lots of impeccable tuning!
@thejazztenor yes their tone is gorgeous. the la master chorale used to be known for their unique tone when they were conducted by their previous conductor paul salamunovich (who is conducting the chorale in this performance). This recording is the standard, becuz lauridsen wrote the lux aeterna specifically for the la master chorale and their unique, beautiful tone. i agree the tempo is appropriate, not too fast or too slow. it is varied throughout the song.
Ok. I have performed this piece a few times now; a couple of those times with an accomplished/well known chorus. This is by no means an easy piece to sing, but you put out a stunningly beautiful and amazingly polished performance. I will be listening again and again in the hopes that some of your skill will wear off on me for my next performance of this in May 2011.
I love this choir - the dynamics are stunning and the diminuendo at the end takes my breath away. I had the pleasure of performing this movement with my chorale recently, and my heart gets full each time I hear it. I haven't hear the recording yet, but I pray we gave it the same beauty and reverence.
@57rocki the la master chorale under the direction of paul salamunovich is amazing! lauridsen wrote o nata lux and lux aeterna 4 the la master chorale and paul when he was their composer in residence. the director, paul, is an expert in chant and he is known for his phrasing, line and dynamics, hence the diminuendo at the end (in latin u never stress the last syllable). the tone he gets out of his choirs is what hes famous for and lauridsen wrote this song to take advantage of their sound
i love this entire movement and was lucky enough to perform all of the pieces of lux aeterna at Carnegie. Lauridsen truly is one of our best modern day classic composers....so beautiful
Beautiful work. Fricken hard to sing.

There are no words to describe the beauty of his music . . . God's at work through him.

God, the Veni Sancte Spiritus just raises my spirits everytime I listen. Everytime I hear the opening intro, it makes stand up.

This remains a lovely work, one I had the honor to sing following the unexpected death of a professor at Pacific Lutheran University in Parkland, WA.
