@glennplant This is what I do. I pick up a game I haven't played before and give my first impressions as I play it. Sure, I might have a different opinion if I learned the game... but that isn't what this channel is about. If you want something in depth, you came to the wrong channel.
Well you may say 'soft' Steve, but it is undeniable (even for you) that Nintendo make consistently good games. And if you do disagree, tell it to the sales figures, mate ;D Great vid too, Benway! :)
@IBeeMonkey It is undeniable that Nintendo make games that a lot of people like. Good and popular are not always the same thing though. You just have to look at the music charts to see that.
I will concede that Nintendo make a lot of high quality games. I just don't like many of them :)
You should really play F-Zero GX on the Gamecube. It's super fast, beautiful graphics, and the track designs are much different and not boring at all. I mean after all, Sega helped Nintendo make it.
Oh come on, that was the first pair of levels, easiest cup, easiest difficulty! You use Z and R for harder turns (to not lose the grip that way) all games has introduction levels, the last cup was also amazing for its time with always completely randomized levels. It's got really smooth controls. Like em so much better than Wipeout really. It's really a typical hardcore game. It's awesomeness deserves a chance!
You make perfectly fair points, and if my video was a review, and was intended as anything other than my own personal opinion based entirely on my first impressions, then I'd be giving much more time to the game.
But my video is what it is... a quick look, where what I say doesn't really matter. It's just so people can see what it looks like.
Try the later levels, it gets really interesting, especially when the race track is around a cylinder type thing that you can race on any side of :o) The early levels are really easy.
Yes it looks like an easier version of XGRA on the original XBox, I would hope the difficulty increases with later levels. I was thinking about other Racing games today which are okay, nothing spectacular but still fun, SledStorm on the PS1 sprung to mind, siplistic arcade style but pretty fun.
I'm starting to regret asking you to make N64 videos now. :(
I do appreciate that you don't like their style of game design, however; it's not gonna be to everybody's tastes.
Re: this game: it's a heck of a lot more interesting when you're playing on higher difficulties and you definitely can't call it "soft" when you play it on Master, let me tell you.
I'll have to make videos applauding the N64 and dissing the PS1/2 to compensate for this travesty! J/K. :P
im not a big fan of nintendo either for the same reasons as steve.
you cant deny that nintendo games are geared for a younger audience than the others so if you werent grabbed by their style of game when you were quite young then you probably never will be.
im generalising here but i think this applies to F-zero.
children of the 70/80s in the UK kind of missed the NES days and i think thts a lot to do with it. your always gona have a soft spot for the games you grew up with.
@calel360 i have a soft spot for nintendo 64 cos thats what i grew up with but i dont think nintendo aim all their games at kids because i think they're supposed to bring the inner child out of you
Yeah, there's very little I can disagree with there, tbh.
The only thing is not ALL their games are geared to a younger audience, most, definitely, however and I personally wouldn't have counted F-Zero in that but each to their own.
I do think that Nintendo really have (generally) gone off the boil the last few years. I could be wrong but from where I'm sitting, the majority of the games that come out on the Wii are more or less the same, in that they seem to go for gimmicks over gameplay.
It's a fair point re: nostalgia, however and you will ALWAYS have a bias to whichever system(s) you have memories of, perhaps some adults in the future will have the same thing with the Wii? It just strikes me as a "cheap, quick frills" system with 90% of the games that come out, I only buy the "big hitters" and a few others sometimes.
F-Zero X is an excellent game and stands the test of time well. What was really impressive about the game back in 98, was the 30 different vehicles on the track.. all running at 60fps. It's fast, it's fun, it's a classic.
Steve, you sounded in a grumpy mood that day. Then again.. you did say that you didn't like F-Zero on the SNES, which I think is another classic that still delivers, so it's just a case of the F-Zero series not being your cup of tea.
if it wasnt for wipeout64, id think the n64 couldnt produce graphics that arent cute and cuddly.
i recently played Starfox64 and thought they created a really cool spacey 3d shooter, but they had to put talking animals in there... they just couldnt resist.
excuse my ignorance, im not that familiar with n64 games. ive played many of them for the fist time in the last few days on Project64. will have to check those out.
It does look boring compared to Wipeout. The tracks seems way to broad to give any challenge during turns. Of course I don't know how the handling is, but it looks like a very easy game.
I think I prefer the music over the game. Mute City rocks. You're probably a bit like me - sometimes I find the history and influence of a particular game is more interesting than actually playing it. Lots of Atari 2600 games fall in that category.
I often can't get a balanced view of a game. Sometimes I'm swayed by what the media said about a game back in the day, while other times I'm influenced by my own feelings of nostalgia, coz I loved the game as a kid, even if it doesn't hold up well today.
Then you get stuff like this... I never played it in the day, didn't read Nintendo propaganda...er... magazines... so I come to this with just a mild dislike of Nintendo.
At least it doesn't have talking animals, or big nosed plumbers in it.
Shame you couldn't be bothered to give it a proper play before making bad assumptions about it

FuzzyDaKirbyFan, you right. what i said was a massive generalisation. im 36 and i hammered New Super Mario on the DS over xmas.
there are numerous games for nintendo console that are rated 18 but im guessing there are more for say sony consoles.

It's so refreshing to hear another gamer say they aren't a Nintendo person.
The whole Nintendo thing doesn't do it for me either, I only like the classic Donkey Kong and Donkey Kong Jr.

Yup... though I do like Mario Kart too. Not keen on him when he's out of the cart though.
Super glue him into it and he'll be fine.

Yeah, it sure was. :)
I must admit: I wasn't overly keen on the original F-Zero but I did play that AFTER F-Zero X and GX so that probably affected my viewpoint somewhat.
I can see that it was a very good game for its day, though. :)
ArcadeMeister 2 years ago
It's funny, I really do sound grumpy in this video, but honestly, I really wasn't. It's just the effect the game had on me.
In the next video, which I recorded directly after this one, I'm much more animated and enjoying myself.

@calel360 You can buy an USB adapter (Ebay) for a N64 controller and hook it into your computer. It works fairly well after it's configured.
just some info :)

The only attack that is in this game is a spin attack.

I didn't stumble across that one, sadly. I'll try a few more buttons next time I play it.
Thanks for the info :)
SteveBenway 2 years ago
And the "barge" - press L or R twice quickly - it's usually more effective than the spin attack because it's easier to pull off.
