newf here me self, irish same as newfies anyways, just a different island.we need a big bridge over.and if they builds it the newfies will build this half and the irish the other half.lol.
@BoudiccaBlanc yeah i quoted the Dubliner's version, cause that's what I'm watching. My original post was about what it sounds like the guy in the dubliner's sang so of course i would look up the dubliner's version, why would you look up another version while watching the dubliner's version lol, i understand where you're coming from but don't correct me unless you're looking at the same version
Yes, this song was written back in the 1930s by the brilliant Johnny Burke from St John's, Newfoundland.
Burke was a famous balladeer who also wrote great songs like "Excursion Around the Bay", "The Night Paddy Murphy Died", "Never Been There Before" among many others.
My mom used to sing this so me when I was little--I was kinda shocked to learn it's a real song! ^.^ But yay, I piece of me mam to listen to whenever...!
Well sorry to correct ya there, but it is indeed a song from Newfoundland. Check your history first. It was written by Johnny Burke, a famous song writer from St. John's born around 1850. Cheers!!

"I'm a young married man and I'm tired of life
For years I've been married to a poor sickly wife She does nothin' all day but to sit there and sigh Wishin' and prayin' that she-ee could die"
(Google is your friend...)

@BoudiccaBlanc "I'm a young married man and I'm tired of my life
For lately I married an ailing young wife
She does nothing all day, only sit down and sigh
Saying I wish to the Lord that I only could die" good try though haha

@rubberduckchild ...You quoted the Dubliner's version which is correct for this video.
I quoted the song from the Newfoundland version (which is the original) This group, with Harry Chapin, does a nice version of the original lyrics:
Great Big Sea - Cod Liver Oil

Doctor "De Jongh's" Cod Liver Oil is the correct spelling for the product

This isn't an American song, it's from Newfoundland, and the Dubliners were, if their name wasn't hint enough, Irish.

Irishfianna 2 years ago 2
@Irishfianna
On Newfoundland's Southern Shore area the residents are nearly 100% of Irish descent. The accents there are very Irish and have been for generations.
I've lived in Newfoundland for most of my 62 years.
