Time to explain things. I don't know why it should come as a shock to learn that some Chinese girls with high aspirations and not a lot of money try to woo western men who do have some. The fact that those girls would join in the drinking games is proof of this. Paul was free to say what he liked and anyway he was just saying what the other guy couldn't. It was certainly those guy's opinion and possibly Paul's too, he was seeing it right there. The producer didn't chose it, there's no script.

Paul was being sarcastic, I think he is one of the friendly westerners to Chinese. The first man he interviewed was the true asshole, he believed that Chinese girls are interested in them because they are handsome, smart, ..., and Paul said the only thing that matters is that they have money.

The whole "game" later is western stupidity, however, as long as you are having fun, why not?

I have spent a lot of time in China, probably more than the people he interviews. Of course there are some Chinese women who are mainly interested in money. This is also true of some European women (and also men!!!). But generalizing is definitely wrong, and unacceptable.

Surely it is the Western men involved, not Paul Merton, that you should complain about. It is clear that Paul Merton is embarassed by the whole thing, and I can see why. That he broadcasts it can only be a good thing- he shows how terrible this is. With regards to money, he doesn't say anything, apart from "I guess the come looking for a partner..." and there is no certainty.

I agree with you. Being an Asian American woman, I'm sick and tired of people portraying Asian women as gold diggers/and or prostitutes. That is laughable, since there are White/and or European women who are gold diggers and prostitutes also. Thanks for this first comment! However, Europeans should realize that "unattractive" is relative. Many Chinese girls I find attractive are considered so so by most Chinese people. "attractive" is relative to the culture. And it's not only a question of "attractive". When two people from different cultures meet, they can have a huge lot of fun together. It's a way of discovering a new world! There does not need to be any "financial advantage", even if the Western guy does not look like Brad Pit!

But if he witnessed a wet t-shirt contest in Europe or the US, he would not conclude that there are financial reasons behind it. Some Chinese women find Westerners attractive because they are less inhibited than Chinese men. But Paul Merton will never try to understand any of this. If he just said that he does not understand this, it would be ok. But he does not stop there.

I think he's more critical, if you watch this in context, of his fellow Westerners and is shocked by the way they later degrade women. I suppose he wonders why anyone would choose such vile unattractive men unless they have a hidden eg financhial advantage.
