  • Paul Carrack was a dam fine singer! What a great voice. Dude fronted some GREAT groups too.

Ace, Squeeze, and Mike & The Mechanics were all fronted by Paul Carrack.

    This dude ROCKS!

  • This song is timeless. I was a 17 y/o kid just graduated from HS and about to enter Air Force Basic Training in 1987 when this song came out.

  • cool song love the 80's for ever !!!

  • Eagles, Ace, Squeeze, Mike and the Mechanics, ever heard of them? Paul was part of these bands at 1 time or another. Paul is a talented musician who doesn't get the press or pub that he deserves!!!

  • one of my favorite songs from the late 80s, for some reason you never seem to hear this song played on the radio anymore which is a shame cause this song was a Top 10 hit in early 1988

  • Aaahh, the 80's. Where good music still mattered and looks took a backseat. My, how them times have changed. I've written music about heartbreak in the past myself. Just finished a music video for "It's Over (The Breakup Song)" and would appreciate some feedback. If you like this song, you might enjoy the one I recorded. Click on my screen name and you'll find the video there. Thanks for checking it out and keep supporting good music.

  • This is a fine fine FINE 80s song, glad to have it on my mp3.

Man, the 80s, a decade where music came from the heart first, paycheck second, unlike today.

  • @amazingdany cant agree more.

  • @amazingdany Amen to that! Such a better time...

  • This song has helped me get over more than one breakup. WHAT lyrics. WHAT a voice.

  • What a wonderful 80's classic. Remember the video when I was a teenager in high school. Some of the best music came from the 80's.

  • anyone who likes this song will like this one as well:

  • will the girl in the video please respond to me....call collect...or not...pete loves you even though we are like 20+ years older.

  • These lyrics were/are perfection for a bad breakup. At times you're not so sure the sun will rise without him/her... Thanks for posting!

  • I love this song and Paul Carrack. He and Mickey Thomas(Starship) have to be two of the most underrated voices.

  • Paul Carrack is stunningly handsome, even today in his wisdom years.

  • great song. I didn't know this, or tempted, or silent running were him. I always thought the "How long" guy was a 1 hit wonder. Pleasantly surprised to be wrong.

  • who is the girl in this video, she is such a stunningly pretty looking girl yet wholesome too.

  • @Doobie1975 From Wiki answers: The woman's name is Kendal Conrad. The reason I know this is because I was the Casting Director on that music video. "Don't shed a tear" was shot in Indio Ca. and

wonderfully directed by Peter Care. My name is Kim Howard.

  • great song, wish the oldies stations would play this song all the time, definitely don't hear this song too often on the radio

  • Beautiful, Powerful; A song we hope we shall never have to sing.... But If we do; This is as good as it gets.

  • "24 people listen to Justin Bieber"-i'm not sayin' that though-he's not as bad as that bitch Lady Gaga-i hope rabid dogs attack your wack ass "meat" outfit, you stupid cunt!!-1987-middle school-one of those joints that never grows old!!

  • "Cab fare to nowhere is what you are..."

  • I luv BARACK OBAMA. Paul Lewis.

  • @semkobenko .....And now you need to get a life....

  • OMG! I loved this song! this transports me straight back, 18 years old and my boyfriend had just broken up with me........perfection!

  • There are 24 people who shed tears because they are crybabies!....wahhh!!

  • Paul Carrack had such a good voice and the 80s had some awesome music.

  • I bought this single for my record player!

  • I love this song!!!!!!

  • Perfect lyrics. ;)

  • brilliant tune.....

  • who is the chick in the vid ? damn hot !!

  • This has ALWAYS been one of my favorite songs!

  • good job!!!!!!!!!!!!

    sankusu

  • Crap! I've been looking everywhere for this song! It rocks!

  • Paul hit #9 in Billboard, 2-13-88. No doubt helped by his exposure in Mike + the Mechanics. God bless ya, for postin' it. Thanx! Have a great weekend!

  • @DaveWollenberg Mike and the Mechanics? WOW You are so right!!!! I had no idea!

  • Wow, major Dejavu

  • Oh this song takes me way back

  • Love this song. Everything Paul does is just stunning, solo, with Ace, Mike & The Mechanics, Squeeze. So versatile as a singer & musician.

  • Great song...

  • another hit song from the best decade of music the 80s, pound for pound the greatest decade for music , shame on the music labels and so called singers and artist of today, it's all garbage, no talent no voice music lirycs suck, what the hell is a LADY GAGA? 50 CENT? BEYONCE? SNOOP DOG? ETC ECT all garbage, is a total disgrace .

  • one of the most underrated voices in rock/pop!!!

  • God, I hate this song. hear it all too often at the grocery store where I work.

  • Paul Carrack...Phil Collins' long lost twin brother, lol....love 'em both

  • This reeks of 80's..and I love it!

  • I just heard this in the grocery store and told my son, "Mommy used to love this song"...he said nothing because he's only one ;-)

  • 1987 seems so long ago

  • beautiful woman

  • Wow, I forgot about this song! Another 80's masterpiece hidden because of all the other great masterpieces from that decade.

  • @bull864 on MTV back in '87 heard saw this vid all the time! Good song!

  • wow, school bus hit lol, had a long il. counrty school bus ride home and this song is one of those songs you might take for granite, lookin back and regreting should make us look at every day more highly but for some reason i always like things after the've passed

  • Great song! Reminds me of when I was 22 yrs old and life was good. Especially the music.

  • Cab fare to nowhere..love that line and the song.

  • Damn...brings back great memories...high school..skateboarding...girls...can't believe that was like 25 years ago already. Damn.

  • what a great song!!!!!!

  • I can't think of anybody more overlooked then paul carrack. i would kill for a voice like that.

  • This song is really good.I remember listening to it when I was young

  • A bit underrated this song and hardly ever heard anymore, but Paul Carrack is a brilliant vocalist. His work with Mike + The Mechanics, UK Squeeze and Ace will forever be remembered. The greatest song I love from Carrack is 'The Living Years', by Mike + The Mechanics.

  • Another great 80s hit. How many hits can you squeeze into a single decade? Answer: see 80s.

  • Awesome!!!!!

  • Man, it's just amazing how everyone who has had some kind of tie/s to the roots of the tree of Genesis has been so amazingly, utterly Divinely gifted artistically. Everybody associated in some near or distant way with Genesis = brilliant songwriters.

Genesis, Mike + the Mechanics, Phil Collins solo, Peter Gabriel solo, Paul Carrack (via marriage).

I was myself in particular enamored more of Paul Carrack than I was even of both Peter Gabriel and Phil Collins.

  • Awesome tune that never gets played on the radio anymore. Such a shame!

  • "A slim chance in tight pants is what you are!" LOL

  • @eightiesguy62 Is what you *want*! LOL

  • @tall32guy Well maybe so but like the song says.....A "slim" chance....so that speaks volumes! LOL

  • great 80's hit

  • Excelente temazo de los 80's genial la musica y la letra. Gracias por subirla...

  • the beginning of this song always did make me feel good...still does.

  • " A locked door on a candy store, is what you are". Thats Gold Jerry, Gold!

  • @stucat06 Too funny !!!

  • How true the words of this song are. I have actually used some of them.

  • The video of "Walk on Water" by Eddie Money is too similar to be a coincidence. Check it out.

  • Yes, she is/was hot back then! I believe her name is Kim Conrad, had a few small parts in some films back then & now runs some sort of her own line of clothing out of California. :)

  • love this song,

    the girl's pretty :)

  • Gr8 tune! Thnx4POSTing!!!!

  • im almost 59 yrs old..music seems to define a decade like the 60s 70s and 80s...with a few exceptions, music has gone down hill unless your beautiful and wear short dresses...........lol

  • Wow I'd almost forgotten about this song. Well done.

  • Paul Carrack kind of looks like phil collins doesn't he?

  • i miss the 80's so much music was so great back then, those days sadly are truly gone but iam so glad i got to experience them!

  • I so freakin' love this song!!!!

  • 20 people shed their skin and not their tears.

  • I so loved this song back in '87 & I still love it!

  • This song is like a time machine for me...instantly transporting me back to high school and my teen angst...sigh...getting old is for the birds!

  • @dylan19674 there is an alternative to getting old: dying. I'd rather get old with good memories than die.

  • A brief stint, that started in 1884, and went as late as 2004? Brief? What do you consider longterm?

  • i didn't like this song at the time but i like it now.

the first seconds of hearing this song made me instantly think back to late 1987 on a cold saturday morning and the cold air as i was traveling over a high, icy bridge to attend some sporting class. don't ask me why though. it's like magic how these songs can make you think of something from the past that is insignificant but so special to remember.

  • Great song, great video, Anyone know who the gorgeous model is that was used in the video, granted it was 1987 and am sure we've all aged, some better than others I suppose.

  • dude i thought for like 25 years that this was Mike + The Mechanix

  • @Sanger500 Well, technically it is. You see, Paul Carrack has been in a lot of bands in his short period. In the 70's, he was in the band Ace (They had a soft rock hit with "How Long"). In the early 80's, he was in the band Squeeze (He sang on their biggest hit "Tempted"). In the mid 80's, he was in Mike + The Mechanics (He sang on their biggest hits "Silent Running" and "The Living Years").

  • @Sanger500 Paul Carrack did have a brief stint with Mike & the Mechanics, so it's easy to mix it up. LOL

  • me i farted

  • I never get to hear this song! I love it! I remember it from high school and associate it with a couple break ups! LOL!!

  • This video has some pretty sweet effects for the time. Nice choice MB.

80's video club shout out - MB, KW, PS, BAAL and don't forget the CoolWhip, everythings better with a little CoooooWhip.....

  • i remember this song when it released, my wife left me and a couple of days later, after Canadian Thanksgiving this song inspired me to keep going. 1987 in October if I remember correctly.

  • Perfect breakup song, or response to a breakup song.

  • Dirtydog, I shouldn't even be responding to this, but Paul Carrack and Phil Collins are friends and even toured together as recent as two years ago. He must have threatened Collins into touring with him too. Nice story though...almost bought it for 2 seconds.

  • Somehow I'm not able to favourite this video? Can someone else try please. Thanks.

  • Fantastic song! Mike and The Mechanics and Paul Carrack - really did bring out some memorable songs on the 80s. Well done! :)

  • Only in the 80’s can a guy who looks like Paul have a radio hit. Thanks for the memories!

  • @stevemister407 so true look at Christopher Cross

  • THIS IS A PHIL COLLINS ORIGINAL. PAUL STOLE IT FROM PHIL AND THREATENED PHIL'S LIFE IF HE EVER TOOK ACTION.

REOPEN THE "DON'T SHED A TEAR" CASE OF 98. PAUL IS A CRIMINAL.

  • @dirtydogF350EFI This song was NOT written or co-written by Phil Collins. It was written by songwriters Rob Friedman and Eddie Schwartz. Schwartz is also known as the author of Pat Benatar's "Hit Me With Your Best Shot."

  • @rpmangin no man, Phil wrote and recorded this song and Paul stole it from Phil. Paul put a gun to his head and told him to never mention or perform it again.

  • Billboard's #83 hit of '88. Paul hit #5 rock, #9 pop, #36 AC, in the US. Did Paul chart in the UK with it? God bless!

  • @DaveWollenberg

It was released as a single in 1987 and became his biggest U.S. hit, peaking at number nine on the pop chart. In the UK it reached number 60 in March 1989.

  • We've all been through a relationship like this!

  • @talon115 And i'll go out of my way to avoid another one.

  • Oh yeah Stevie Winwood wholey moley almost forgot 'em.

  • Wow 1987 is back! Paul can do know wrong. One of the best of plastic British soulssters Paul Rodgers Anne Lennox Elkie Brooks Robert Palmer Van Morrison Alison Moyet Freddie Mercury Amy Winehouse and Bowie the best of British Soul many more i'm sure.

  • Great wisdom from this song's lyrics.

  • @zluvu4ever 100% agree

  • The 80's man I tell you.The best damn music there was.Today's music and bands/singers are SHIT!!

  • @helimech60 yEah, this is basically what any one who grew up in the 80s knows, today's music blows

  • The other song I was looking for! Geez, I'm happy now!

  • Great song, I will see him live in concert in March 2011 in Amsterdam, can't wait. Should be great, just like when he performed with the Eagles.

  • Jeez...even the breakup songs in the 80's were legit

  • @Wlhssuperjake08 And they were sung by real people not some label manufactured soulless product of marketing department.

Wow, beautiful song and beautiful girl -- this song and the girl embodies everything that was great about the 80's.

  • Great song here by Paul Carrack. Did you know that he was part of the band of Mike and the Mechanics? I am sure some of you will know. Paul was the guy who sang the living years. Anybody here let me know if you knew any of this info

  • @footguy31 I did!

  • @footguy31 - without appearing somewhat arrogant . . . . yes, all of it.

  • A favourite of mine...one of the best feel good break up songs around ;)

    Great voice too!

  • oh wow ? i love this song :)

  • Written by the great Canadian songwriter Eddy Schwartz. Look his other stuff up on YouTube and you'll likely be amazed at the number of famous artists he's written for. Plus he has a site here on YouTube!

  • @tyme4mike

I didn't know that! Loved this song even before I knew it was by a fellow Canuck :)

  • @ndirish79 Canuck? You must be thinking of someone else, as Paul Carrack is English. LOL Or were you referring to the guy who wrote it?

  • @tall32guy I was indeed referring to the songwriter ;) Wouldn't change a thing about how it is sung though :)

  • Truly one of the gems of the 80s. Paul Carrack has that distinct voice and the lyrics are outstanding!

Thank you for posting this one.

  • que temazoooooo impresionante,lo tengo en mi MP4.....

  • Is PAUL CARRACK PHIL COLLINS Brother?? LOL!!

  • DAMN, can I ever relate to the lyrics to this song lately!! Very well written.

  • @zachyeah13 Me three..

  • Who else only watched this because of the nigahiga vid

  • @zachyeah13 yup.lol

  • @zachyeah13 I don't even know what that is. LOL

  • wat is this shit?!

  • @GoldFishOver9000 the good kind.

  • Good memories!!

  • After Paul had a falling out with Phil he went solo and this was hit first release in 1987. This was one of the best videos on MTV when I was a teenager along with other great videos from great artists from megagroups who hit it big as solo performers like Don Henley, Glenn Frey and Belinda Carlisle. In the 1980's great music was commonplace and taken for granted. There will never be another decade like that one.

  • @happyhoman Paul Carrack NEVER even worked with Phil Collins to even have a fallen out with him!!!!
