This is an inspired approach to feature animation - use under-appreciated public domain music for the soundtrack and adapt a traditional story. Let the resources you can find and afford lead and inspire your creativity. With that formula, you have a starting point for creating a feature film singlehandedly. All you need is time, dedication and talent, which Nina Paley obviously has in spades. This is really a way forward for independent animators. Brava Nina!
So "ain't Disney" and makes it very charming. Love the blend of music and art work. Top notch -- hope it wins an award or two at Tribeca - Patrick in London
I was floored when I met Nina a few years ago, and I discovered she was using the music of Annette Hanshaw for her work. Anette Hanshaw is one of those forgotten singers of the late 20s-early 30s, who should be remembered. Bravo, Nina! You rock. This is wonderful.

Problem: music isn't public domain. That's why it can't get a wider release (at least, not yet).

Cute designs! Great synthesis of historic western pop music, eastern comsology, and very original art. Well done, Nina.
