I first heard him on a pirate LP of the 1969 La Scala "Siege of Corinth" in which he sang the role of Cleomene, and had no problem keeping up with Sills and Horne in the coloratura department. He soon took on more dramatic roles and I did not hear him in the house until his Manrico at the Met in 1990; he was in spectacular voice that night and sang like a god. Thank you for posting this wonderful video clip!
In America, we were not given the opportunity to come to know Mr. Bonisolli , except the few that saw him on stage at the Met. or Washington Opera. His power , range and completely open throat are amazing. Such a true Verdi tenor, great high c's and so very manly. It's a shame his Cd's and video are quite rare.An amazing talent !
@TonyRomeoUSA1 He also sang here at the San Francisco Opera. I heard him first as a quite young singer in Traviata. The voice wasn't too big then but he had that easy High C. Maybe twenty years later he was back in Gioconda. Gordon Getty had paid for a new production for Pavarotti. When it was revived they cast Bonisolli. I heard both. Pavarotti had a smoother voice but Bonisolli was more exciting. Pavarotti's live Di Quella Pira wasn't this good.
Voce, temperamento e arte scenica fantastici! Franco sei stato un tenorissimo!!! Criticato troppo, Bravissimo!!! Uno dei miei preferiti! Fantastico!!!!
Bonsollis performances were exciting but full of tiny flaws. He had a great voice, great range and was enjoyble to listen to. He sang true on the final note of this aria which not many singers could attest to.
Bravissimo Bonisolli !
Bonisolli has probably been the best Manrico of the last 40 years. And he proves it here. Who yould sing this aria as the stretta it is? The open shirt though was definitely not the director's idea. Bonisolli was truly in love himself and I was always forced to see his hairy chest, no matter if Manrico, Otello, whomever.
Grande Bonisolli!! To my ears still not as great as the "other" Franco - but - EGAD to have his likes among us today would be a gift from heaven! The soprano looked a great deal like Marilyn Niska...anyone know?? Thanks so for posting this - brings back the remembrance of many of Bonisolli's performances!! Always great - even if frequently over the top!!
he is good! but I can hear throat notes in his singing but it doesn`t matter, he is very good! I can hear that he knows the vocal school de l`U but a bit deviates from it....all the same...he is magnificent...
I am not a fan of Franco Bonisolli, prefere Mario Del Monaco, but inspite of it I have to say, that this is...............................The best rendition of this aria!
Well, Bonisolli is fantastic. But does anyone seriously like this aria? What's the point of this piece of music? I mean, I often love Verdi. But this?
with due respect, this may not be othello or another play by shakespeare, but the stretta is one of the great scenes in all of opera. cannot be trumped for drama and tenoral effect.
Yes, I like this aria. Verdi's cabalettas are not always inspired and have been cut often over the years...Leonora's, Alfredo's, il Duca's...but never Di quella pira!
Where was he when I was going to see Corelli and del Monaco? In Europe, I guess. Is this a film only? He sang it so easily, and in the original key, I thought he might be lip-synching...was he? Either way, he was obviously a magnificent Manrico.

This guy was so under rated. Unbelievable vocal range. A career that was cut short as Bonisolli died at a young age but still one of the greatest of his time
Also the timbre, the style, and the quality of the high notes reminds to Franco Corelli. But Corelli was not so much teatrical. He shows more from the figure and less from his own personallity.
