i wonder. does he feel like there's anything he can't do with a guitar? it must be liberating to be only be limited in what you can imagine vs. what you are good enough to play. it sucks to suck lol
@katinkers I was reading the wikipedia page for Shred Guitar just today, and the comment made by Steve Vai towards the end says it all..."The terminology used for someone who can play an instrument, and has such a tremendous amount of technique that what they do just seems completely effortless and absurd...."
@arpeggios070590 I kind of agree. in any case, you might also like 'Morglbl'; Michael Landau; Robben Ford; the Howland-Imboden Project, Fareed Haque to name a few of the living. If we count the expired, then Shawn Lane is pretty incredible.
@arpeggios070590 Yes, you are kind of right about that...I mean there are still some awesome iconic legendary innovative guitarists out there, but as for skill and versatility Guthrie's the man. Not a ton of people know who he is though right? I feel like the guitarists that know his stuff really follow his music, like a cult like following of guthrie fans lol I only found his music about a year ago and have been listening to him religiously everyday.
@guitar5289 Ur right about the fact that not alot of people dont know who he is and its a shame that genius muscians like guthrie and all the other amazing guitarists mentioned on this page dont get the recognition they deserve. It is an irreprehensible travesty commited by the music industry and its something that I fervently wish can be changed but unfortunately thats the world...que sera sera I guess
@arpeggios070590 You should check out some Greg Howe...'Morning View' from his 2008 cd Sound Proof will give you a good feel for his electric & acoustic styles, while 'Tell Me Something Good' is a brilliant cover of the classic 70s song by Rufus...just dripping funk! To go way back, listen to 'Direct Injection' from his 1993 cd Introspection...Greg Howe is the MASTER, he burst on the scene as a master in '88 and has only gotten better with each new cd.
@JCGREENGENES Im very familiar with Greg Howes work...and he's one of my personal favorites...I also think hes one of the most amazing guitarist in the world and his ability to compose certainly warrants great adulation and critical acclaim but I feel that in terms of ingenuity, originality and technique I havent heard anyone better than Guthrie...its my opinion please dont crucify me lol
@arpeggios070590 No crucifixion...dude I uploaded the video! What Guthrie plays from 0:07 - 0:27 just to get the song going is 'not of this world', a definitely godlike prowess at play there. My point about Howe, perhaps overstated (based on certain overreactions), concerns the virtuosity displayed in whichever genre he's tackled from the neo-classical High Definition with Vitalij Kuprij to playing bass & keyboards on Prashant Aswani's album 'Duality'...Greg take it beyond. Fini
@JCGREENGENES Thank you guys for not having a ridiculous YouTube argument about this. This is actually legit. Greg obviously has spanned the genres, having both fusion and neoclassical in his catalog. Morning View? I can listen to that any day of the week and feel awesome when I hear it.
@JCGREENGENES However, I feel like Guthrie has the complete control over the instrument, whether it be in the studio or live. I have this feeling that GG can play absolutely anything that you throw his way, regardless of the genre, and can excel at it. He is an absolute beast that can take any song and give it energy.
@dchisey True enough, have you heard/watched the Guthrie video. 'Guthrie Govan Mimics the Greats'? Outstanding work, and I love Guthrie's playing...I just personally find myself going back to my Howe folder more often than Guthrie's...(if I'm not in my Flecktones folder that is...THAT'S where the real sh!t is)
@rintintin7529 Actually, for the diversity factor, Greg toured with N Sync...Hmmmm, I wonder if JT availed himself of one of the best teachers while he was available? JUSTIN TIMBERLAKE just might be the next 'Guitar God', so tread lightly friend...tread lightly. Timberlake is coming.
@dennoow ok thats you're opinion, How ever I think guthrie has more meat to his playing. Im also a greg howe fan and studied his style for a very long time.

@ErlendRagnaMusic why so guthrie can spank the shit out of zakk and make him quit guitar entirely? that wouldn't be good for his career.
