  • Im 18 and ive been addicted to harry's music for the last year and a half. I wish i could shake his hand.

  • Did anyone else notice he said crazy instead of horny

  • I was lucky enough to hear him perform in person in the 70s. I never understood why he wasn't a lot more famous. I thought he was fabulous!

  • He may not have topped the charts the way some other musicians have but his legacy is worth so much more.

  • Harry inspires us with his words, his stories but listen to his arrangements and melodies. Wow, this was a one of a kind guy. I know every single one of his songs.

  • Grab the audio from this vid at speedyconversion doht cohm.

  • I'm 18 and i'm here listening to it, you can blame my dad for that ;)

    Good music never grows old

  • this song an Mr. Tanner are incredibly good. two of my favorite songs.

  • 30 years gone now but Harry is not forgotten.

  • 30 Years ago...Harry Died his music and work still stand...thanks from all of us in the Cheap Seats!

  • Seems like the things Harry sang about were a reflection of my life too. I could relate to his stories, his songs and his feelings. Seems like I lived some of the things he sang about.

  • When Harry played in Marquette, Mi. I was blessed to see him with many friends there. It was a time to remember and inspire for a lifetime.

  • All the respect and kindness this man gave to the world in his music...He remains in our hearts forever.....

  • as shown by the amount of dislikes this video has, no one can hate Harry.

  • thanks harry

  • Harry's brother Steve owns a park in Nova Scotia and puts on a weekend each year to celebrate Harry. It is a great weekend.

    Check out Ovens Natural Park.

  • Harry, the world needs you more now than ever before.

  • Off to see Harry's band tonight...cannot wait...his songs hit the very core of one's soul...you 'feel' Harry's songs...Imiss him to this day....over 30 years since I last saw him perform.

  • harry was such a great man.........STILL FEEDING THE HUNGRY

  • I learned today harry and i share the same birthday.

  • Sorry TheNewAgeGirl...Harry died just after my 2nd birthday. I cannot express what his music does for my soul. I wish often I was older and could have seen him in person. But, I will continue to feel his love through his music. Harry will live on!

  • Thank you so much for posting this! I'm probably the youngest Harry Chapin fan... my parents had some of his music on 8 track tapes and I used to listen to them from about 7 or 8 years old. Something about the honesty in his music really touched me then and still does. I'm really sorry I never got to see him in concert. He died a few days after my 11th birthday. I wish more people my age knew more of his great songs than just Cats in the Cradle.

  • @TheNewAgeGirl Me too. I'm 24 and have LOVED this style of music since I was a kid.

  • @TheNewAgeGirl Trust me you aren't. I'm 19. I was lucky enough to have parents who were fans.

  • I love this song but these lyrics are "edited" does anyone have a version of Harry doing the other lyrics (on his greatest stories live cd) "more than a little bit horny" is quite a different tone to the song and given the rest, pretty significant

  • I was lucky enough to see Harry play in Sheffield, England in the mid to late 70's. He sang songs which reflected the way I saw the world. A marvelous artist with a heart. RIP

  • My sister took me to see Harry when I was 12 it was my first concert and I loved it. It was the only time my hands were red after the concert because of clapping so much. He really knew how to get the audience involved. I'm in my forty's now and have been to many concerts be his will always be my favorite. I really wish he was still with us. RIP Harry you touched my life and many others.

  • I saw Harry in New Orleans in 1980 from the 4th row. His death the following year was very sadd

  • That John Wallace in the background?

  • A special man.

  • Saw Harry Live in the late 70's at the Palais in St kilda, Melbourne about a year before his death. Just himself and his guitar.. no band and to this day it was still the best concert i have ever seen

  • @klausf1 Sounds like a wonderful night. I wish I was born in an era to see the great musicians. Today all I have is Beiber concerts or Warped tour, pshh..

Real music has nearly died in this day and age.

  • @iTzxDioxidE You just have to look for it, its there.

  • @simo66 I did, and found out Tom Chapin's gonna be playing a concert near me :D. I'm excited [:

  • @simo66 I did, and found out Tom Chapin's gonna be playing a concert near me :D. I'm excited [:

  • this man is my guiding light, almost too good for this world. Why he was taken from us so young is a mystery that only the Almighty can explain. BOY DO WE NEED HIM NOW

  • i wish i could randomly run into songs this good everyday on youtube :D

  • this is the type song your glad to randomly run into on youtube :D

  • Harry was awarded the congressional medal of honor for his world hunger project. They placed it on his empty chair on stage with his gituar in memorium. Truly one of our best musical blessings to the planet. Keep the change Harry.

  • @GodNyou2 With all due respect, I must disagree with you on the Congressional Medal of Honor. He was awarded the Congressional Gold Medal, bestowed by the United States Congress. The Medal of Honor is the highest award for valor in action against an enemy force which can be bestowed upon an individual serving in the Armed Services of the United States. Generally presented to its recipient by the President of the United States of America in the name of Congress.

  • @GodNyou2 Thank you, I stand corrected. I was typing to fast and was very sleepy at the time. Glad you cleared it up!

  • @GodNyou2

My pleasure, and great to know that I'm not the only one who thinks so well of Harry. There are just a few voices of that era that stand out for me; Jim Croce, Gordon Lightfoot, John Denver, and Harry Chapin...

  • kinda half in love with him from listening to his music and voice as a kid, never even saw him until youtube videos haha

  • he was on his way to play for a world hunger fundraiser. no more giving man on the planet. he gave of himself, his music, his time etc. when he died he left his family with a house a hundred thousand or so in the bank and the rights to his music. when asked once why his songs were so long, he said because it took a bit to tell his stories. the good die young.....

  • what a great soul, too bad he had to leave a world in need.. we need you back harry, you knocked some sense into us

  • Another Cheap Seater here.... Harry was great in concert, and a better man. I purchased tickets to see him at Ravinia. It was the day he died I had the tickets hours later when they announced he had been killed. I turned the tickets back, and did what Harry would have wanted..I donated to World Hunger Year in his memory. Doing that selfless act at the moment still is carried inside of me today. Thanks Harry from all of us in the Cheap seats and beyond!

  • Harry was one of the great singer song writers of his day. One who should be far better known than he is now. Being able to tell evocative stories in song is far from easy to do. But his talent was massive. And thank God he left behind him a fine body of work. And its time he was re-discovered.

  • never managed to see the guy always regretted it he was such a word smith

  • I wish i could have seen harry in concert, he and bob dylan are the 2 greatest storytellers i've ever heard

  • @rgmartin727 i saw bob for the first time in concert back last winter, and even at his age is still puts on such a good concert! i love him and harry!

  • Time has shown that I never forgot you Harry - Thank you.

  • how I loved listening to his songs. In the 70's I was lucky enough to be in the audience at several concerts he performed at the Celebrity Theater in Phoenix.

The revolving stage made it such an intimate evening for everyone in the theater.

    Harry, you are truly missed.

  • Harry was a MUSICAL GENIUS. This is a REAL BAND, beyond compare.

  • God I love Harry I'm 19. He and The Boss helped me write poems. They both make a simple story about anyone into something amazing. I'll be lucky if I ever get half of their creativity.

  • man am I re-discovering his music in a big way. Nothing like a great storyteller

  • he was a very nice song writer/ singer.

but he was not much of a man.

a man would never touch a married woman.

    thats just wrong.

  • ITS A SONG .. get over it.. And anyways maybe the married woman wasnt exactly happy.. Live life by rules created by men without any chance of transgressing?? I dont think so.. Harry was a better man than most.. Enjoy the music man

  • @MrSkegman It's nice living with principles that are never tested, isn't it?

  • @MrSkegman Why throw stones at Harry? Are you saying you've never committed any sin of any kind in your life? I'm sure you have. While "touching a married woman" isn't a good thing to do by any means, you're saying he isn't a man because of one transgression in his life. What about all the good he did? Perhaps it would be better for this world to send out love rather than judgment.

  • @KittGibson

I don't believe Harry performed the actions he describes in his music

  • @lordoftheapples Actually, this song was written about how he met his wife, Sandy. He has stated that several times in concert. Not all of his songs are true to life, of course, but this one is.

  • @KittGibson Cats in the cradle is quite a true song especially involving harry's life, he died of cardiac arrest (as the hospital said) and than his truck fell of the side of the road, His daughter stated that harry was very stressed and didnt sleep or eat well; which would explain the cardiac arrest, cats in the cradle's lyrics talk about a stressed man, RIP harry chapin

  • @PhenomenalConspiracy Indeed.

  • @MrSkegman I don't believe Harry's music describes what he actually did.

  • You couldn't go wrong with the cheap seats......

  • @ThomsenLasVegas I sat in the cheap seats at many a Harry Chapin concert. I still rmember the night of the crash as if it were yesterday

  • This is a song about Harry met his wife

  • Saw him twice. An underappreciated artist and sweet soul. Thank you for the "stories", Harry. You are an American treasure.

  • Dear Harry, I remember your concerts as if I am there this very moment. I remember that you donated the proceeds from all of your sales at every concert. I remember the long lines to meet & greet you and to get you to sign all of our treasures. I remember you would stay until each & every person shook your hand, kissed you on the cheek and always in such a quiet loving spirit. What a privilege to be there with you. Thank you Harry, you'll be loved for always!

  • @outtwalg Well said

  • I don't know just how it happened, but it seems that Harry Chapin came along on the music train and he showed me how he really loved to sing for people and had so much to say...! He was definitely one of the very best Story Tellers or shall we say Balladeers that ever was. I sure do miss him I think that's Big John Wallace on stage there with him. John's good people and the group...well....terrific.

  • first day i've seen videos, new to the puter, but have every record then replaced by cassette and then replaced by cd. just bought a new gold medal collection as the first one wore out. still waiting to see dance band on the titanic, but can listen and sing along instead. thank all of you for recognizing and cherishing the best story-teller of all time.

  • harry is my idol i love his music

  • This new Youtube sucks everything is an error

  • He's still taking care of hungry people today. His family is still donating half of the royalty money to fight world hunger, which he was doing long before Bob Geldorf (who acknowledged his work.)

Harry said he always played one concert for himself and "one for the other guy." I'm sure that he's proud of his family for still doing it.

  • The perfect comment!!! Harry was a true gem!!! Never will be another Harry!

  • Harry's daughter is also a talented singer/songwriter herself, and the family and the band still do a concert together every year. the Chapin sisters sing "Remember When The Music" and it's wonderful.

  • @TheWagbert A wonderful comment & observation. He was one of the most enchanting people that ever spent time on this planet. Was fortunate to see him several times & he was a person who saw the good in people and encouraged us to dare to dream. Keep the faith people.

    xx

  • i live in england and if you listen yo the lyrics of his songs something will reach out and touch you and answer a lot of questions you may of life, nicholas aspinall

  • I saw Harry live in concert five times, just turned 50.....was in my late teens, early 20's when I saw him. My brother turned me on to him and he will be 58 tomorrow. Harry left this earth way too soon! Awesome live, great show, great man, he basically died broke because he gave all of his money to starving people throughout the world. Not the greatest voice of all time, but live he is great......blows anyone away with songwriting! Hands down, the best songwriter and words on music!

  • i agree and i am 50,nicholas aspinall

  • Gone to soon we love you Harry its 2009 and i still love these songs the best. my 17year old son likes them to.A brilliant talent a greater human being.RIP Harry

  • @question905

I had know his music from earlier but wasn't really introduced to him until 95 thru my husband, and I am so thankful for my husband for first introducing me to his music and of course to the talent of Harry Chapin, his wife and his band.

  • Drove from Rennsalaer, IN (St. Joseph's College football player) in '78 to West Lafayette, IN (Perdue U.) to see him. We were drinking quarts outside the exit when he came out to smoke, very cool.

  • He died in a car accident on the Long Island Express way on his way to do a concert for world hunger in 1980 or 81..

  • how did he died?

  • I grew up on Harry Chapin. By the time I was 10 I already had 3 of his albums. Gone way too soon, and there will never be another like him.

  • one of the best songs ever. a singular talent to be sure. RIP Harry Chapin i know you are in Heaven

  • i love harry he lives on he has been in my mind for the last twenty six years BEAUTIFUL .... WHERE R THE KISSES

  • Harry`s dad played drums in my wonderfully talented aunt`s band. His dad went out and hit some golf balls with me one afternoon. What a treat. An incredibly talented family. Harry was the absolute best at what he did. A brilliant talent and a human being who did so much good for so many. He will always live on through his thoughly meaningful and entertaining music.

    Thanks for the post.

  • It must have been hard for Sue and the kids having Dad on the the road so much and doing so much charity work, but be proud many people still love and respect the music.Thank-you we will never forget. :)

  • I will love Harry Chapin forever. I saw him perform at Bucknell University in 1977. He was amazing. What a great story teller.

  • i love this song and harry chapin is just plain awesome

  • Love his music, have several of his CD's wished he was still around. Good Man!!

  • love it!

  • I saw Harry 6 times. He always gave you your money's worth and then would come out and sign autographs.

  • Brilliant .....5* Thankyou for posting

  • Tryin to work out the chords Harrys playing. He is capoed up to five, then starting in D shape but Im not skilled enough to work out the rest of the chords, he makes them look really easy. Any help out there , Chapin fans ?

  • Goosebumps and tears

  • Shame really ... look at the all time most watched videos ... it's all crap, nasty music, nasty lyrics, crappy singers. The old masters like Harry have been forgotten by so many, or never found by the new generation. 16K views on this song? It's a shame, no other way to put it.

I can only wish I'd been old enough to go see him live before he passed on. I've heard from so many people that if you ever saw Harry sing live, it's something you'd never forget for as long as you live.

  • amzing story teller, I am 14 and I guess that makes me a loser but I dont care lol

  • Yes, a great storyteller; don't you think Johnny Cash is, too? I adore him.

  • yeah, I guess, I have no doughts he is talented but I turned 15 yesterday, I wouldent pick up a johnny cash album first but thats just me, that being said I havent heared that much johnny cash anyway

  • Check out the movie, "Walk the Line." It's a great intro to Johnny Cash's life, though he sings better than Joaquin Phoenix (the actor who plays Cash) does. Great film about a country/rock legend. NOt as gut-wrenching a storyteller as is Chapin. Chapin almost makes me wish I were dead!

  • a great song

  • so sad he is not with us any longer SCRANTON PA

  • amazing song, amazing musician

  • I just recently discovered Harry Chapin, and I regret not finding him sooner. So many great songs.

  • I was raised on him and now at 27 when i sit and listen to him it will bring a ear to my eye. Seriously the only mans voice that will ever do that to me. He had so much talent and soothing voice.

  • I am 14 and I love this stuff

  • Me, too. Though so many of his songs are overwhelmingly dark. I heard this was about the woman who was to become his lifelong love and wife.

  • one of harrys best!

  • I need to know why those idiots at the Biography Channel are not picking up on a Bio special about Harry. he sure is deserving of one....................

  • @SEVFEST no but the second that the tiger woods thing became big news they picked up like six different ones.... I guess they dont care about people who actually did good in their life

  • @SEVFEST I couldn't agree more. We have to sit through the likes of all those plastic surgery enthusiasts instead. Makes one wonder.

  • @SEVFEST I think they did one on him in the 1990s. I know I have seen a documentary on him on an educational channel.

  • @SEVFEST Have You Asked The Folks At Biography Channel?

  • @CLKamin .... yes I have and they told me this artist was NOT on their schedule to be added to their programming....

  • @SEVFEST Hey, because Harry Capin, Jim Croce, and Otis Redding were great musicians but very private people so you probably couldn't get anyone to talk about them. They were all great talents. They had a bio once on Jim and I can remember how someone describe him. He have a conversation with anyone from the most peace loving person to a klansman, gather them in a circle and and get them to communicate with one another. I feel that Harry wrote alot from memory. You can see his life in his music

  • Harry you died too soon !!!!!!!

  • This sis Harry's song about meeting his wife!

  • ya juss get takin in by his tunes an voice what a legend

  • This is one of my favorite songs by Harry. It's too bad this song and Sequel to Taxi did not receive the air time they truly deserved. ....5*

  • i really love this song because it reminds me that it is the feeling, and expirence behind the voice that makes it beautiful,,,Harry realised this and that is why his stories are a kind of music that isnt created now
