Pretty good review. The wireless issue is a big thing, realistically. However i did notice something very interesting. Kubuntu's wifi is better than Ubuntu. Test it for yourself. I'm downloading OpenSUSE right now. Ubuntu was crashing WAY to much for my taste.
I'm on opensuse now and its ok...I think ubuntu performs better in some areas but idk. :( :( :( im so confused. I like them both and I despise dual booting.
Opensuse is the only major distro that will not eat my laptop hard drive with the aggressive power management default that most linux distros, including Ubuntu Hardy fail to override. For that reason alone I am using Opensuse. It is also a solid distro. Only thing it lacks is a large online community similar to Ubuntu. If it had that, Ubuntu would have a major challenger on their hands.
Does openSUSE still lack a useable software management tool? I remember when I used SuSE Linux about 5 years ago it depended on these ugly .rpm files that where splattered all around the internet and most of the time where a pain in the a**. I would guess that apt is far superior to anything .rpm related.
I'm pretty happy with Gentoo Linux: only does what I want it to do + good package management + big community. Together with e17 I'm pretty happy.
I don't agree with your statement saying openSUSE is following Ubuntu. Let tell you this: intrepid ibex is supposed to bring pervasive (please someone correct me if I'm wrong) internet connection, meaning that you should be able to connect to the internet through a wired connection, wifi, EV-DO, HSDPA, UMTS, and all of the 3G technologie available. This means Ubuntu intrepid will be shipped with network manager 0.7 but as you might have guessed openSUSE 11.0 already ships it.
I agree ubuntu follows openSUSE, openSUSE devs make all the technology and innovations, all ubuntu devs do is package software and call it a new release. Novell has more contributions and developers improving software like openoffice than anyone else.
All distros? There are 1000+ distros according to distrowatch. I highly doubt you tried them all. If something doesn't work Ootb, don't cry and complain. Just download the latest drivers, and compile them yourself. BTW ubuntu is NOT a power user's distro. Seeing that you can't install drivers means you aren't one either.
that hurts man but the fact of the matter is YOU DONT KNOW WAT U ARE TALKING ABOUT linux is like legos u build it to be wat u want it to be i made ubuntu into sommething much different than wat it came with i made it a power users distro sure i didnt try all 1000 distros but i tried all of the major ones and they all work madwifi does not work with my card retard and finally i use ubuntu because of its community and the fact that if linux goes enterprise ubuntu is the one who is going to do it
If you wanted a system you built yourself, then try gentoo, arch, or build your own distro. That is what I did. Ubuntu doesn't even have that large of a community. Many of the users on the forums don't even use ubuntu. Look at their profile sometime. They are only there to help newbies like you. Linux will not enterprise ubuntu. Red hat has already done that. Your card probably isn't even supported by the linux kernel. Download and compile the drivers, and stop crying like a baby.
Okay, but I don't think anyone gives a shit. You are making a big deal out of a simple problem. You won't use a distro, simply because it doesn't have a wireless driver pre-installed. When I tell you to download and compile said driver, you get pissed. Maybe it was because I called ubuntu slow. I looked at your profile, and it seems you have only been using linux for about a month. This won't be the first time you hear someone speak negatively of ubuntu, so don't freak out when it happens.
yeah he might have an abnormal wirelesss card it works for big name brands but maybe not his card. but i do agree he should have made the drivers himself
Ubuntu has one of the biggest communitys of all distros ubuntu users rank in the highest of newcomers to linux elitests hate ubuntu because it caters and brings in newbs into thee community and provides one of the most user friendly linuuxes easily competeable with Mac OSX and Windows. BTW red hats desktop distro failed in the desktop market the only thing redhat does now is servers and there new dewsktop fedora is a slight couch to ubuntus large commuity you sir are a fool
Ubuntu does not have as large of a communtiy as you think. If you bothered to actually look at the number of ubuntu users, it is still fairly low. I never said I hated ubuntu. If you two dumbfucks would actually read what I wrote, you would have known that I only called ubuntu slow, and is not a distro for power users. Yes, red hat failed as a desktop distro, but made lots of money. You sir are a dumbass, who can't seem to spell correctly.
what's so bad in people to ask for Ootb working components, and what's so bad in newbies to choose Ubuntu to start with Linux? xD I think the only dumbass here is you. Not everyone wants to build an OS of their own, not even compile a single program. Why do you think most people use windows? because when they try any Linux distro, problems like wireless come up, maybe with easy solution, but they don't care about it, they just want it to work. FYI Ubuntu comunity is much bigger than reg users
You Linux fanboy sentences are just ashaming. I use ubuntu, I've been using gentoo and opensuse too, and also windows vista and xp. I don't feel smarter or dumber if I switch from an os to another, I just use the one who fits my needs at some point.
Get the head out of your ass and learn to write firstly. Secondly, try using your brain to write up your own sentences, and then maybe you'll say something useful
openSUSE only ships free software and drivers in their default install, u have to add the madwifi repo and install it so then it works, otherwise it just detects it.
simple as that, openSUSE is a million times better than ubuntu
@videok90 I tried madwifi with my old wireless card and I couldn't get it to work either. I do agree with the guy in the video it shouldn't take a rocket scientist to install a wireless card. Suse 10.0 was the best but since they've dropped a lot of good packages on the service side not just drivers. As for ununta you don't get a complete download. You have to download a desktop and a server without a gui if you want a server and a desktop. So I'd pick Suse over ubunta if the drivers worked.
so opensuse has the wireless issue? so is that means it wont connect to internet via wireless right?

apt-get is a package manager. It is called Aptitude. It isn't a package manager just because it has a graphical interface.
I always use the Terminal...

who cares about wine 1.0? It still doesn't support any worthwhile applications (exception possibly flash MX)
Open suse is bad as is kde.

Good for you young peoples (especially USA peoples;)) if you have a lot of free time and nothing interesting to do.

Or if you're not stupid enough to pay $129 for faulty software and support a monopolizing corporation. Go back to the cave, troll.

I'm not enough stupid to sit in Linux where no any guarantee for work anything.
129$ - is one-three day work kid.
One day and I don't must tiring with this pathetic OS (for desktop) all me life.
I don't say Windows I fucking awesome, I like more MacOS X and you shouldn't comparing your hilarious OS to Windows if it so bad.
I'm paying and I have working solution.
In Linux you must have a lot of free time - "that is hobby" - Torvalds words.

Not a big fan of ubuntu, opensuse, kde, or gnome. Ubuntu is slow and buggy. You shouldn't expect any distro to run wifi OotB.

What w-lan chip/card do you have?
Colamix666 3 years ago
atehros 5something im not sure
tehcomputerman 3 years ago
try to install zd1211-firmware with sudo zypper install zd1211-firmware
should be native supported with 2.6.23 or higher (with firmware pack).
Search for other rpms with "rpm -qa|grep zd1211"
Make sure your w-lan channel is right to your router and all is fine. You should also try to log on your w-lan router config to see for testing.
