Was the sound picked up on a mike or fed directly into the camcorder. I have an old Tandberg, but it does not play any more, and where I live no parts are available. I love reel to reel machines. Thanks for the video.
Sweet! I never heard of B-wrapping, except in U-matic video machines, they wrapped up that way on the takeup reel. After years of watching "standard" reel-to-reel machines, seeing this one's take up reel turn backwards is kind of unsettling... That's what you see when the capstan starts eating the tape!!
The reels spin in this direction because EMI tried to save money in the design, there are only a few machines which do this, from the early 1930's machines, they have run both reels in counter clockwize conditions in playmode.
I used to listen to everything in mono, and it really was simply wonderful. Then stereo was invented and low and behold, I imagined that it was twice as good. How wrong I was! The chap who posted the comments below obviously has no idea what he is chuffing off about! If he wants dinner in my listening room I'll show him what audio purity is all about.
Beautiful machine with that great vacuum tube (or valve) sound! It's surprising to see that it uses the 'B' wrap, same as the Brush BK-401 Soundmirror (I have one that can be seen playing from my YouTube page).
Does the Emicorder have a "normal" type rewind action? With the BK-401 you have to remove the tape from the heads and and drive, then thread it around the rewind guide/limit switch in order to rewing the tape.
Thank you for your comments, I too have a BK-401, the BK is a 3 motor machine were this is a single motor, the B-Wrap is thought to be a cost cutting thing rather than any of the thoughts of tape archiving techniques, I must do a video of my BK-401, sadly its not as in lovely condition as yours.
Wow! Beautiful machine and excellent sound. It says something for how well engineered these EMI machines are, that you can record something on a top-end Studer A810, and play it back on this machine and it's on speed with no audible wow/flutter/noise artifacts.
I use 3-1, WD40, Molly Grease, Copper grease, sowing machine oil, and others, the 3-1 is a very good oil to use on the EMI's oil well pots, with the larger machines, the pots need filling frequently.
Hello, I have got green, grey, black, brown, blue, yellow and red backed tape, on my other vids, the A812 has yellow tape, but this tape is not back coated as recorders with head pads dont like it. The begining of the tape is green as it is the leader tape.
Wow, what interesting machines! It's nice to see these old guys still working! And the sound was really good! Could you use 8 mm reels on this machine, the spindles look like tho0se on the old 8mm projectors. Thanks for another great and interesting video!
Cheers! this recorder will take up to 8.1/4" reels, the one next to it needs the centre pulley removing before they will fit. Some of these TR-5X series will only take 7" reels due to a large counter, more videos on the way!
Sweet i am downsizing my collection I'm selling my big Revox machines and i'm going to stick to the 2 Tandberg series 15 machines. I got both models the mono and the stereo version and i have just finished restoring both machines to full working order xD
The sales brochure which states the recorder is 46lb 4 oz which is 21KG. I have got the original paperwork and a boxed mic for this recorder now so its a nice show piece, I shall put some pictures on the VintaeRecorders website shortly.
Cheers for your comments, the wooden case on this recorder is in very good condition for a machine which is over 50 years old, this recorder opperates at 7.1/2 only.

is this machine ac or dc bias? I would assume it to be ac because of the very high audio quality, but is it in fact DC?
grassulo 1 year ago
Its AC BIAS on these machines, this sustem was used from 1948 and onwards.

Very nice recorder, interesting the B-wrapping of the tape.
Surprising small diameter centre spindles in the reels hence high outside speed of the flanges.
It looked at first that is was 38 cm/sec.
Great valve sound
RODALCO2007 1 year ago
Wow, I wasn't expecting such a big sound from that! Is that the internal speaker playing?
Any idea what year they started winding the take-up reel counterclockwise as in modern decks?

Amazing! Sounds great for a 60 year old mono machine! I use the same 3 in 1 oil on my collection of antique tape machines... and it tastes great!

That's 'Boogie woogie' by Tommy Dorsey and his orchestra. Recorded 16 September 1938 and originally issued on Victor 26054. Classic!

Very nice machine! I saw one of these in a book about old technology awhile ago and yours is in almost BETTER condition than the one in the book!
One question though.... Why is the tape oxide green?
blarrer20 3 years ago
I think thats just leader tape
lfmssoundman 3 years ago
Oh, sorry... It's just the video quality... it makes the tape look sorta green :S
