  • This is such a nuanced piece of work. i am growing to love it just as much as my all time favorite, "Maple Leaf."

  • Virginia Tichenor is Trebor Tichenor's daughter. I like this played a good deal slower than this.

  • I think it's very well played... It shows people who want to learn to play this piece what its all about and the accents really help here cause sometimes you know you don't really see them... so lol ja it helps!

  • sorry i meant she is his daughter.

  • rfdarsie, i believe she is his sister.

  • I wonder if she is related to Trebor Tichenor, the famous ragtime enthusiast and collector?

  • You probably didn't notice the related Easy Winners video...

  • @rfdarsie Actually she is! Trebor is her father and my she is also my aunt! Trebor Tichenor is also my grandpa. :D

  • @rfdarsie It's his Wife!!!

  • Joplin's most melancholy rag, in my opinion, it's haunting, almost eerie, as if Joplin himself were in the same room (though I don't believe in ghosts!). This is my favorite piano piece of all time. Great performance!

  • What a contrast between this rendition and Larisa Migachyov's. They are so different, but I cannot decide which I like better. It's like choosing between two favorite flavors of ice cream.

  • Superb Performance

  • This is a great performance, but idealy the right hand does need to be a little louder, the left hand quieter, and it needs to be played quite a bit slower.

But I do like it , my critisisms come as I am learning the piece myself and want to try and learn it as well as possible.

This version is good and different, though I prefer it how I explained above.

  • that's the beauty of expressive music like this, i bet she loves to play it her way

but ya i agree with your preference i love listening it to it slower

  • first i need a million dollars for a piano, then a million days of practice, i'm still going to do it

    i love ragtime!

  • I have a copy of this song from the 20's and this version is about the same speed. I like it. Makes me want to get up and dance.

  • I like this interpretation, - it grooves!

    Greetings from Jo, Bremen

  • I agree with the right hand being drowned-out comments, but I love the KICK you bring to this piece! It drives...

  • Please slow down and savor the notes. I play this piece and it's so beautiful I get tears in my eyes. You play with feeling, but it's too fast to really catch that.

  • This piece is played very well i must say but personally, after watching hmmmeh's version of this piece, i think the notes need more reonance to them.

Also, and this is just me being picky, i think her right hand should be slightly louder because at some points the left hand drowns out the melody

  • Great Playing!

  • Wow, a lot of these "Joplin Ragtime Fest" videos are great listens. This is an interesting rendition of magnetic rag, never heard like this before. Makes it sound a lot like one of Joplin's older rags. Personally I like playing Magnetic rag more slowly and musically (along the lines of Fig Leaf or Gladious), but I'm glad that this video was posted. It'll make me rethink how I play it. :)

  • Love it!

    Thanks for posting.

  • i like her using of the pedal, it makes things funky at certain passages. however, it would sound more funky in my opinion if she'd play the song with the triplet feel.

  • excellent work...well done!

  • I have played it on a piano before, i do know what it's like. I played this for A Level Music on a piano. I'm just not fortunate enough to own a proper piano. When practicing a keyboard does it for me fine. :D.

  • For your kind information,Bob, Its 100 times

tougher to play on a piano cos the hammers hit real strings. Your hands need a lot of strength

    to play.

  • Now you're talking Bob! I'd love to see what you can do on a real piano. I eagerly await.

  • Haha, oh how i love youtube. I shall post a new one when I have time to play it on the college piano, I don't have one see. And on a real Piano one can express more easily, keyboards are a bit rubbish. I have seen what's his name's version and it is splendid.

  • Oh yeah Bob... on the subject of growing some ears... have you seen WutherSoxDenton's version of Magnetic yet? Do you honestly, for one second think that your version holds a candle to his? It's in a completely different league. And surely you must think there's more to playing the piano than just picking the right speed and hitting the right notes. If you can play it better than you showed in your video, post a new version, and I'll be the first to say so.

  • Never said this was a great performance. It's not. But neither is yours. Yours is mechanical, too slow, and expressionless. But she never got on your video telling people how great she plays. You did. If you don't like this version, why not point out another video that's even better than your own? If you can play it so well, why not do another take or two and prove it.

  • at 02:45 she ruins it well badly, either you're tone def and can't hear it, or you just feel great sympathy for this woman, and her too rushed, and innacurate performance.

  • That was my first spontaneous take actually mon frere. I don't officially play the piano and have taught myself, but i'm pretty sure I could indeed play it at this very ragtime festival, along with the entertainer, and maple leaf rag.

  • Oh yeah... Bob - let's see you get up in front of a crowd and play it at a ragtime festival. How many takes did it take to get your video? Virginia did it live - one take.

  • So Virginia plays it too fast and Bob plays it too slow. Allegretto ma non troppo = Quickly, but not TOO Quickly - Bob's really slow tempo does not qualify as "quickly." They both make mistakes. Bob just had the bad taste to criticize someone else when his version is just OK - not great. He wishes he could play it like TulsaUmpire or WutherSoxDenton (actually, I wish I could too)!

  • Her dynamic expression is rather good though :D.

  • Virgina, I understand that your having trouble with the tempo of this pieace and concequently your playing it to fast. This is fine, dont beat yourself up about it so much. yes, your going to fast AND your making alot of mistakes but this is fine, carry on practicing and you`l get up to Bobhanchefs standard eventually.

  • At the beginning at the top of the page on the music, it says 'Allegretto ma non troppo'. ie. Quickly, but not TOO Quickly. and this is TOO quickly in my eyes, or ears :s. I played this for A Level Music and got a B. I'm happy with my tempo. Sorry you're all not.

  • First time I've ever seen anyone here say "see my video to see how to play it right." Sorry Bob - Virginia way out-plays you. You make mistakes too, appear unable to play it at the correct speed, and have nearly zero expression. See WutherSoxDenton's video for a really great version.

  • Oh yeah, and go to my channel and watch my video of me playing this same piece on my keyboard at the RIGHT tempo with LESS mistakes. cheers.

  • No offense but

she has played better than you

    with less mistakes!

  • I agree, she plays well, and I like it fast, it's fun to play fast that kind of music, she is great and VERY well played lefts!!!

  • Why do people not like the 'too fast' comments? it is too fast, grow some ears for gods sake.

  • She makes mistakes, it's too fast, yet it's still good. I think it's a four star.

  • Great tempo, good rendition

  • Wayyyy too fast

  • Delightful!

    I luvit!
