  • I have a physics exam tommorow which includes the doppler effect on sound and light, i came across this not meaning to revise but this video explained it alot better than my science teacher, Thank you! you should make more videos like this

  • True story-- my friend is studying abroad in England, is hanging out with your friend Tom and showed me some of his videos which lead me to your channel. In that degrees of separation Kevin Bacon game, we'd be really close. Two or three. I don't know how to properly calculate it.

Anyways, I realized I had seen your channel before when I saw this video. I watched it before my astronomy midterm earlier this year. I'm pretty sure I answered some questions correctly because of it. So thanks!

  • Correctly speaking, surpassing the speed of light is a questionable topic, theoretically speaking, matter moving at the speed of light should... well thats the thing, it would be unpredictable, there is a chance it could explode in the equivalence of mass nuclear bombs, it could velocitize such as in a sci fi show, where everything is fine, or it could just turn to goo, or time could start traveling backwards creating a dimensional paradox. I would go on to talk about abs 0K, but no space left

  • Fun science gravity

  • MY HEAD AHH

    HIS FACE AHH

  • hi charlie

I've got a question about light- if theoretically one moved at a speed of light whilst holding onto a torch, what would occur(theoretically) if you were to turn said torch on?

If anyone's got an answer to this, feel free to tell me~

  • TESCO ^_^

  • i just realise wen charlie is running the other 'charlie' is wearing converse and charlie doesnt have converse so im thinking its alex...........................................

  • "Now as I'm sure you're aware the speed of light is 299 792 458 m / s."

    Oh yeah obviously...

  • light only travels as fast as you said in a vacuum, through sodium at -272 degrees C it travels at 38mph. which is slower than my motorcycle.

  • @111spitfire1 neutrinos*

and apparently that's been disproved, there seems to have been a fault in the wires.

  • You should do a video with Professor Brian Cox, that'd be awesome

  • am i the only one who laughed so hard that i fell off my chair when he explained the doppler effect by screaming?

  • The Alex face at the end made me piss myself laughing :D

  • things can go faster than light........

    neutrons!!!!

  • you Charlie are a very sexy geek!

  • ha you're such a funny and smart guy! science is so fun with you, charlie!

  • If what you say is true (which of course it is) that moving close to the speed of light time moves slower, would that mean we could live longer because time is different for us because we are moving differently then the things around us.

  • please make more fun science!

  • I had 3 lecturers at university, trying to explain the Doppler effect. No one did it as good as you did :D

  • I like how he's across the street from TESCO.

    like a BAWSS

  • Super,super fun.

  • im glad you like physics, not biology. :)

  • charlie this helped me so much!! my physics teacher hates me but hopefully my brilliant homework on the doppler effect will get me into his good books, THANKS!

  • Best illustration of doppler effect!!!!!!!

  • Does he remind anyone else of Brian Cox?

  • Well I didn't know that :P

  • pretty bluimming fast ...:-)

  • I think charlie should be my science teacher... id have more hope than U grades in gcse :L

  • Right now i can act like a smart ars in class when we learn this!! ahah

  • Alex at the end.. oh God... :)

  • press like of you found the i in this lllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllillllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllll

  • This is going to help me on my test tomorrow.

  • not gonna lie I'm a tiny bit disappointed that you didn't mention how nearing the speed of light affects mass, but still a totally rad video and I learned about the Doppler Effect

  • Hank Green and Charie, BEST TEACHERS EVER!!!!

  • I'm sat here doing a physics homework paper. You helped me so much! THANKYOU!

  • you're such a nerd. i love you

  • ...wow.

  • my science teacher would love this

  • Comment removed

  • I go on youtube to purposely distract myself from my homework and I end up watching something about science...wh-what? Why? O__O

  • the way you say fast you say fast whereas i say fust lol xxxx

  • This is my revision.

  • is tht a real accent????

  • @foxxyjenfulxD What kind of question is that? Of course it's a real accent.

  • i love your fun science videos! i impress people with my newly gained knowledge(:

  • LOL ALEX AT THE END

  • I watch this over and over just to listen to Charlie scream like a lunatic. It cracks me up.

  • You just explained the Doppler Effect 1000 times better than my Physics teacher... and you don't have a degree in the subject.

  • on the bench you look like hank green lol

  • Who went back again to see if you could see Charlie running at the speed of light?

  • the Doppler effect is bullshit with echos...

  • I with he was my science teacher

  • Haha!!! Take that mom!!! Who says I can't learn any thing from wierd videos on YouTube!!!!!!

  • i used this to impress my physics teacher when we started studying light

  • It isn't possible to travel faster than light? Yeah right; watch Dragon Ball Z ^^

  • He's such a nerd :) Brilliant! DFTBA.

  • Hey, without sounding like a weird fangirl (beacuse I'm not I just think you're awesome), I just wanted to say that you're the perfect guy. You're very funny, very smart, a bit awkward, hot, cute, and weird. As I said, perfect, and I hope I'll meet someone like you some day okthnxbye

  • You are the most adorable creature I've seen on youtube in a while xD and a knowledgable on eat that, well aren't you so full of surprises. :3 Great vid, wish my teacher could make science as interesting as this....

  • love u charlie

  • all trueeeeeeee

  • TESCO IN THE BACKGROUND.

  • Charlie...you are the coolest nerd ever!!!!

  • @achmed078 charlie proves that 'coolest nerd' is not an oxymoron!

  • Actually, recently it has been known to go faster than the speed of light thanks to the scientists at a particle accelerator laboratory in Europe who were able to make particle fragments travel faster than the speed of light... twice

  • I enjoy charlie's lessons SO MUCH...

  • creep

    but u r awsome lol

  • So funny lol :D

  • We just learned this in physics. :)

  • AAHHHHHHHHHHH!!!!

  • My Science teacher just mentioned this and I wasn't too sure then I remember this video and watched it again :D

I know what she means now.

  • Nothing can go faster than light... Then BOOM! NEUTRINOS!

  • RON PAUL AD!

    Made my life.

    AND THEN A SCIENCE VIDEO!

    I think I love you.

  • I showed this to my science teacher and now she's going to show it to the whole class....... :) now I get to see Charlie at school :D <3

  • Sorry to break this to you Charlie, but you're always slightly red. Dont worry, It's a sexy red ;D

  • N-N-N-NERIMON.

  • if you appeared next to me screaming like a lunatic i'd probably hug you and not let go until you marry me...

  • actually the light's speed( 299 792 458 m / s) isn't faster than speed of neutrino! but we need to wait until they confirm that! so... we still need to say that light it's faster

  • yay this helped me with my science homework :D xx

  • Thanks for doing my homework for me! ;)

  • @bantersanta i will laugh if the infomation is wrong :L

  • See it's funny because he is wrong.

  • press 1 to see where charlie is going on holiday :)

  • this legit helped me pass my physics test last week

  • my science teacher showed this to our class because i showed it to her. that sounded stupid. anyway, my class saw this and now we understand

  • Ah! You make science so adorable XD and understandable :3

  • 5 likes i will walk up to mah friend and scream for 3 min.

10 likes and in the middle of a school day i will run around and SCREAM!

50 likes i sit in the shower and really SCREAM!

  • holy fuck!!! you're really smart!!!

  • you know i think you just saved my physics gcse :)

  • You teach me more than any science teacher ever has, thank you.

  • 1:27 editing boo boo charlie... no ones on the bench

  • if only he was my teacher...

  • You just helped me with my Astronomy homework!!!

  • i showed my friend this video and it helped her on her Physics test! xD

  • nice...now imma go watch Fringe

  • Neutrino's travel faster than light, but this still doesn't change the fact that we can't travel as fast as light due to the energy released as mass...god I'm such a nerd

  • LUMOS

  • Wow, graceful runner, isn't he? Hahah

  • sonic the hedghog is faster than light!!!

  • WRONG Neutrino is faster than light!!! haha. i know this is before that but still

  • @xXW0lfD3M0nXx That was only one experiment. If they want to confirm that Neutrinos are indeed faster than light they would have to do the same experiment a bunch of times and every time the result would have to be the same.

  • I sent this and the other "Fun Science" videos to my seventh grade science teacher. Thanks for helping me make the seventh graders' learning process funner!

  • the hadron collider

  • I heard that it is possible now to be faster than light. I mean... Some french scientist saw that neutrino particles arrived about 60 nanoseconds faster than light over a distance of 730km...

  • No, I would of left!

  • Watched this in my science lesson today :D I actually LML!

  • RANDOM NERIMON FACE? It must be face Friday!!! YAY!!!

  • This topic is cool. You're British, therefore, also cool.

    doubleplus Coolness Points

  • It's meaningless to make this video unless you make it for child, and I like the comment said you were gay.

  • I'm learning the doppler effect in school and I got so excited because I knew everything!!! I am taking notes from his fun science videos to share with friends. :)

  • I had no idea you were gay..

  • I Wish I could run 80mph:P

  • My physics professor mentioned the time travel! The example he used has always stuck with me - take a set of twins and send one into space travelling at the speed of light. When he comes back he'd be younger than his non-astronaut brother. Insane! So time travel is theoretically possible, to the future at least. =)

  • Charlie McDonnell. Helping teenagers get their Physics GCSE since 2011.

  • I did not just spend all this time watching Charlie Science videos to revise mum... o.O

  • marry me?

  • false! neutrinos move faster than light

  • that was cool and your so british

  • uploaded a day before my birthday :)

  • Light a a gift to the world. -3

  • Can't believe this counts as revision! ^_^

  • actually, it has officaly been found that a spacific particle can actually travel faster than the speed of light. scientists everywhere are pissed

  • that headnat the end scared me :(

  • I seriously need to stop commenting before I finish the video.

  • The doppler effect also applies to time with the speed of light etc. I just spent a physics lesson 2 days ago trying to explain to the rest of my class how that worked... (I'm in yr 9)

  • The running and screaming must have been so fun to film.

  • Also, children, please note that the Doppler Effect does not work with monochromatic light, since you cannot ever change the frequency of monochromatic light. You won't turn blue light into red one. It's only the wavelength you can adjust. Yes, I got an A* in my A levels. ;)

  • @chelseamad202 ya im american

  • Also if you take a flash light make the light beam pass by a black hole the light beam is going to bend towards the black hole because it can absorb things that are faster than the speed of light

  • he's so freakin adorable. am i the only one that thinks that?

  • Love that cocky little nod of the head when you were saying humans have managed to go faster than sound

  • imange that your sitting by a cannal enjoying the britsh weather when AHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH

  • Dr. Sheldon Cooper....

  • @polkadotsnstripes11 The Halloween party! xD "Let me give you a hint... nieeeeewww!"

  • i learnt about this yesterday in physics, you are a better teacher...

  • you are smart and handsome

    how come?

  • That was really educating to me x'D thanks Charlie

  • I eat beans....

  • Actually we have recently discovered than we can excellerate particles to move faster than the speed of light, meaning we can time travel! I'm 10 years old and I know that he's what, 20 and he doesnt!

  • @chelseamad202 not quite how it works... particles were recorded moving faster than the speed of light, but the experiments are being thoroughly reviewed and the results retested.

For us to move at the speed of light we would have to accelerate at a rate faster than humanly possible...

also, this video was made before those results were published...

  • @chelseamad202 im 10 too!

  • @blah31s oh cool im english, are you american or what

  • Can you make a Fun Science video about Schrodinger's Cat please? I think its nonsense but perhaps you can make me think otherwise

  • I clicked on this because you were hot...

    and then I learned! o.0

  • hi boy

  • thank you charlie im going to get an A on my Astronomy Final because of you! my teacher also loves yur stuff! if you could make a few more videos i can watch you in school more often and i would like that =)

  • You should do an episode about nuclear fission

  • Same shift in pitch happens in cars :O

  • This was so interesting :)

  • lol read the tags

  • Awesome info. I pretty much knew most of the things you said like relativity, speed of sound and light, but not as deep as the waves in light and sound or the change in time. Never knew that at all. Very interesting. Well, I have to take physics anyways next semester. I always found it truly interesting. Last time I took it, I was 14 and I did not get a thing!

  • this is seww beneficial educational! :D Whooho!

  • Mom: BILLY! are you doing your homework about light?!

    Billy: yep!

    Mom: Well good!

  • You just helped me with my homework thanks charlie

  • this prepared me for like 20 questions on my test lol!

  • that's just confusing...

  • Comment removed

  • Best analogy ever. I want to show this to some of my science teachers and say 'See? You should do this!'

  • You should do a fun science about the large hadron colider

  • Charlie Mcdonnell you have taught me more in 4mins than my physics teacher has in several months :) thanks :D xxx

  • so your telling me if you would of ran at the speed of light you would slow donw time meaning you wont get old but other people will die of old age ?

  • this realy helped me with my scholl work, thanks charle :)

  • There was a question on the doppler effect on my GCSE's so thanks very much :D lol

  • please be my physics professor

  • i dont know why, but when the pitch changes when hes running has me in stitches :'D

  • what about the other ppl in the park their like wth dude...
