  • Most Americans can get coverage under existing programs. People who lose their jobs, have no job or are disabled qualify for medicaid. Many people who have jumped on the universal health care band wagon are the 18 to thirty crowd who have health care plans available to them at work but opt out, Why should they have to pay for it? Drop the ego and apply for Medicaid, or take out a employer plan. If you think it's expensive now, move to England. 53% tax rates will be a real culture shock for you.

  • Number one, Christians follow their beliefs in a personal way. It is very legalistic and even disingenuous to say that all Christians should support one thing. Especially when something like health care is never mentioned.

    Number two, you are to love your neighbor in a personal way, not in a way that demands nothing of you except impersonal money.

    Finally, it is up to each church to define how they want to help humanity. If it is health care, let them. If not, don't browbeat them.

  • If one understands Christianity, they would know that God is personal and we must not be forced by man's rules. It is God who gave man freewill to do what he pleases, and follow the Lord in a personal way.

    Christ did not ask people to simply give their money . He also asked us to be "cheerful givers." Which means that we should not give if we will not willing give it up. For the giving shall not be peace with God but for our egos. I am not asking for selfishness simply cheerful giving.

  • Finally, to any atheist who argues that Christians should push for this cannot argue that Christians cannot push for other issues based on personal religious convictions. Because, they have effectually nullified the idea of separation of church and state.

    To state that Christians should support this means that it is okay to set up a political system based on religious beliefs.

    Therefore, an atheist cannot be mad when Christians want to stop same-sex marriage, or to stop abortion.

    I am willing to help someone pay for health insurance if they needed it and asked. In fact I want a health care voucher program to help people pay through a charitable org.

    Second, I do not like any state authorized marriages. However, once again you cannot be mad or even argue with someone (Muslim, Christian, Jewish, etc.) if they want to impose gov't action based on personal beliefs if it "fits."

    General Welfare as used in the Constitution means common happiness. And it is only a compliment of a taxing and spending clause to be used in conjuction with the other enumerated powers.

    There is no authority in the Constitution for the government to tax me to give someone else free stuff. Period.

  • The two greatest single avoidable factors to your health leading to chronic diseases and a lot of medical bills are not smoking and not being obese. I don't think that we can have a government option here we just have too damn many fat people that will sink us all with them with all of their health care costs....some have to die before their time (AKA the bad genes) so others can go on. Why do blacks and latins have such a higher rate of diabetes and obesity? They cant control urges!

    If you can't find modern examples of socialist policies around the world which support the poor, it is because you do not wish to find them. They are everywhere. Many European countries are Democratic-Socialist, and their countries are far nicer to live in.

    The U.S. government should play it's role and serve it's people, and with millions of uninsured, it's not doing that. The constitution not only says nothing which would prohibit universal healthcare, but also tells us to promote the common welfare.

    I really don't understand what you're trying to say. Are you suggesting that my using Europe to make a point shows that I'm against the U.S. constitution?

    It's not your argument that dictates the role of the US government. It is the Constitution that spells out how it is to be run.

    Furthermore, there is not a period after the common welfare clause. It goes on to say exactly what the federal government is supposed to do like build postal roads.  Government run healthcare was never written into constitution and was never added as an amendment.

    You are totally taking that out of context. Look at your own quote. It clearly is explaining the establishment of the Constitution. The role of the government in regards to General welfare is spelled out in Article 1 Section 8.

    FACT: Healthcare is not in there. Neither is foodcare, sheltercare or clothingcare.

    Sure, it's not in there, but it's not unconstitutional in any way. There are plenty of programs we have today that aren't outlined word for word in the constitution, either.

    Anyway, just because the fed enacts something that is unconstitutional (like medicaid), it does not mean that you can use it to merit the case for something else.

  • @BrianTotse NOONE gets refused healthcare now, without gov't intervention. It is guaranteed through the Hipocratic oath of all Doctors, and supported by the Medical Industry. The costs get sread across the paying base already. There is no need to be resolved by Government Intervention.

    In the end, the uninsured has a debt for the care they receive that they may or may not repay in the end. But nobody in need is refused. Go to the Emergency room and see for youself how it is now...

  • The main argument is againt Universal healthcare (a.k.a. socilaized medicine) is the fact that American citizens will be taxed more than they already are, especially when there is a multi-trillion dollar deficit. Secondly, there is a perception (perhaps a misperception in some eyes) that Americans will recieve poor quality healthcare compared to private insurers. A few folks out there don't want to pay for health for the poor (a.k.a black people).

  • Well, sure, taxes may go up, but this is balanced out by the fact that premiums and insurance rates will be far, far lower due to having to compete with the very affordable national plan.

    The country with the highest rated quality of care (By the World Health Organization) is England, which has socialized medicine under the name of the NHS (National Health Service). It has been serving them since the 1940s.

    I will, however, say that Congress, the Senate & the White House is rushing this issue way too fast and carelessly.
