When disassembling the aerator, or anything, it is always good practice to lay everything out in the order it was removed. Re-install each piece by working in reverse order.
Here, the metal fitting usually has the aerator placed into it, then a washer placed on top and the assembly is screwed back in place. However, not every faucet is the same. Some may include two washers, for instance, in that case one goes into the fitting before the aerator, and the second goes in on top of the aerator.
It would be helpful to know how the different parts of the aerator fit back together, once they've been taken apart and cleaned.
