In my opinion Spitz. A true amature and wasnt caught taking drugs ?? He was my idol in 1972 when i was ten years old ! And i went on to swim for England, what an inspiration he was to me ! Mark Spitz was the greatest !

Spitz. the fact that it took someone 36 years to beat his record should show people who is truly better in their given times. In swimming, world records are shattered every olympics. It is very common to see world records fall. and yet spitz held that one for a loooooong time. all while lookin like a B.A. with that mustache.

Spitz without any doubt. Then, Olympics were only for amateurs,so Mark was swimming because he loved it. He did not have an army of scientists,doctors,nutritionis­ts and sponsors behind himself. Also he broke seven world records,when it was not so ussual as it is today. There was no 50m races.He would have taken eight gold in 50 freestyle and I am sure gold number nine in 50 butterfly.

PHELPS. First, just look at them... who looks stronger and faster? Second, when Spitz was swimming, the fastest swimmer in america was the fastest swimmer in the world.  Now, the entire world is performing at incredible levels many people didn't think were possible back then. And third, michael phelps trained waaaay more than mark spitz ever did, and worked much harder. Now that's a beast for you. No disrespect to mark spitz though

Michael Phelps is clearly the better swimmer. Spitz has won 9 gold medals in total, Phelps has won 14, and there's gonna be more to come. And thats utter bullshit about Spitz making up 10 full seconds just by shaving and wearing a lazer suit. Phelps' technique in butterfly is definitely better.

yeah but spitzes 200 fly was 10 seconds slower than phelps and phelps wore a lazer,was shaven,had, short hair no mustache,a cap and goggles and spitz wasnt shaven had long hair a speedo and no cap or goggles. i think i spitzs had all that he could make up more then 10 seconds

what you have to remember is that in Spitz day, NO ONE wore caps, goggles, fast suits, or shaved. Today, the people Phelps races have the best suits, goggles, caps, and they all shave. It's all relative.
