Just get an 80g. Its backwards compat and has internal memory cards for ps and ps2 games. Word of advice stay away from the 40g. Its not backwards campat. I learned that the hard way instead of reading up on it.

As awesome as Persona 3 is, I don't think there's a timeline connection. If you will recall, there was little connection between the previous Persona games and Persona 3 other than references to them.

I'm pretty sure Persona 4 will have a timeline independent of Persona 3's story.
