The Band Of Gypsys with the legendary drummer Buddy Miles and bassest Billy Cox produced some of hardest head-thumping music that was super tight. The "Live at Filmore East" recording's are the best example of this historic trio. In 1970, I saw Uriah Heep open, then Deep Purple was next and the main attraction was Buddy Miles & The Earth Rockers. It was my first concert, I was 9 or ten years old. We miss you both.
Buddy was a SOLID drummer. He had an overall harder sound to his playing because he didn't do all the jazz fills that Mitch did. The difference between the dynamics of The Jimi Hendrix Experience and Band Of Gyspys was that in J.H.E., Jimi and Mitch played off of each other and bass player Noel laid the foundation whereas in B.O.G., Jimi and bass player Cox played off each other and Buddy laid the foundation.
@groov539 Dude with Jimi, you can't say something like that! I suppose you can, but what's the point? The J.H.E. was Jimi's original band, you talk like they were a bad group or something!
@MattHatter When I saw the Band of Gypsy's gig at the Fillmore for the very first time on video, it's clear his jams were much more intense.. I'm probably wrong about the "black band" thing because he kicked ass at Berkeley and his band was "The JH Experience". His playing was a little out of whack at Woodstock EXCEPT FOR THE STAR SPANGLED BANNER.. Maybe too high? LOL
You can tell by Buddy Miles intense drum playing, that Jimi also plays this tune intense as well. Great performance!! Buddy's drum playing brought out the best in Jimi!!
He is doing some things and ways of playing he hardly shows, and it's some pretty insane playing... at this point in his career you can see he was just playing instead of dancing around and playin with his teeth, which was cool but, it's amazing what he can do on a guitar...after all these years he is still my idol, the innovator...and thinking about he was just in his late 20's! and God bless Band of Gypsies!!!
the audio is not mixed very well

Buddy Miles kept Jimi on point because he had less room to meander like he did with Mitch's style of drumming.

I love the way Buddy approached this song so differently than Mitch Mitchell. They were both great but very different. Buddy was an amazing drummer.
