EarthBound Zero never had a fan translation. Back then Nintendo was going to release the game and it was going to be called EarthBound. But it didn't come out. If EarthBound Zero was released, EarthBound on the SNES would be called EarthBound 2.

Nintendo actually translated Mother 1 in English, but it never came out because it was right before the Super Nintendo was released. But several years later, a bunch of guys found an auction for a prototype cartridge of that translation, and borrowed it to dump it. A guy named Demiforce hacked the ROM and added "zero" to the title screen.

When they translated (but not released) Mother they changed the name to Earthbound. when the fan got it, he changed te title screen to add the "zero"

The story goes that they had Mother (titled Earthbound for US release) translated and ready to go on NES. Then, for reasons unknown, they decided not to release it. Demiforce got a hold of it and slapped a "Zero" in the title screen, since Earthbound was already out on SNES.

the reason they didnt release it was because it would have released on the launch date of the SNES. This almost stopped mother 2. that was also mother 64 wasnt even ever completed, the team wasnt used to the 3D graphics, they had it on the 64DD, got so many setbacks that it was canceled. so with mother 3 the were just like screw it, no america release

He did more than slap "Zero" on the title. There are some parts in the game made easier because of a few tweaks he made to the game. For example, right before exiting Magicant, a man stands in your way. Talk to him and answer yes or no to his questions. If you answer wrong in demiforces hack, you just have to talk to him again, but in the original version if you answer wrong you get warpped back to the entrance of the dungeon and have to fight your way back to him to talk to him again.

@cahill39 not really, In japan one of the tag lines was "the world could be saved with a mother's love". If you think about most of the endings of the games illistrate this idea Mother One= you defeat Giegue (giygas) by singing the song his surrogate would sing to him. Mother 2= the whole umblical chord floors and fetus thing.....and when one of the last people to pray for you is Ness' mother. Mother 3= Claus' mother collecting him and saving him from eternal evil (Giygas/Porky's fate)
