Kayaking is one of those 'you had to be there' things. We have 'hillbilly' rivers like this around Portland as well, and sometimes they are good getaways even though they may not make great video. kayaking is about kicking back and calming down sometimes. You either get that(and kayakers do)or you do not. Life is not always about 'extreme'. I do street luging and hang gliding also...I go calm river kayaking for a different reason. Being on a slow river is a great kind of BEING.
fun is never useless - although it can be a setback (like the time i had to do all that community service for crushing those bunnies under my hobnail boot).
