Well this made a lot of sense in regard to things happening in my life. So if I had a friend who has no particular religious preference, and while my friend was working and suffering personal issues, and I got all depressed during that entire time, and suddenly that friend's issues ended and I'm suddenly fine, the friend could have actually been feeding from my energy and draining me?

They have chosen on an unconcious or concious level to be users, and so they have been given what they have chosen. Until this world understands how to be free of manipulation and power over others they will never evolve. Energy Vampires work with your own connection to there energy fields. By lowering yourself either energetically or conciously you make yourself easier to steal energy from. It also has to do with vibration and intention setting. If you set your intention that you will not allow people to steal your energy you have created a boundary between you and them. Also highering your energetic frequency makes it harder for lower level people to reach you.
The explosion that you describe in society, I believe, is the popularity and acceptance of the aggressive narcissistic qualities. It's a form of control and that's why those who engage in these behaviors do so. They have a false self to replace the true self in their personality because of childhood trauma or abuse. Overindulgence of a child is also considered abuse.
What you are describing to me sounds like Narcissistic personality disorder. They are draining individuals that require limitless amounts of attention. They are very dangerous people. I knew someone who I would consider to have the traits of NPD and they had a history of negative draining relationships that more than once ended with their partner dying. The don't want to work, they want others to do their bidding in many different ways, they pick their victims, usually nice unsuspecting ones
The taking of energy from other people is much faster than having the body naturally replenish its own energy. Those traits absorbed from the environment are not the actual trait admired, people will absorb the energies perceived as being connected to what is admired as a self destructive shortcut.

actually most people are energy vampires. It comes from a lack of connection to ones own higher self and people that arent connected to spirit need to get there energy from someone. They are usually needy, manipulative people. alot of them are unconcious of what they are doing. Others know exactly what they are doing. It all comes down to a spiritual emptyness that they will fill with other peoples energy, drugs etc..

Technically you are correct :) we all are source so by that statement, yes we are just taking from source. However it is this very connection to each other that allows us to share energy (synergy). When one person manipulates another consciously or unconsciously they are recieving energy from the person they are manipulating. This is a backwards way to recieve life force, ultimately the goal is to receive from source without co-dependancy and to be centered enough to notice. :)
It always seem like we all fall into the trap of finding a sort of external factor of why we feel bad especially, when we go through hard or early spiritual initiations. The initiations start or end as an existential crisis & can be so very traumatic. It's normal to inadvertently lash out, but you don't want to engage in a witch hunt, accusing people of being "energy vampires" ! Especially when we are all quite spiritually guarded from such things, particularly when we meditate & calm our souls.
It is not my intention to initiate a witch hunt. I made the video to how we rely on each other for energy and how it manifests in our energetic body. We are all guilty of needing energy from others, we naturally turn to each other for a boost because deep down we remember when we were all interconnected in one consciousness.

There is no life form in existence that does not take energy from something. I.E. plants take energy from the sun and each other, herbivores take energy from plants, carnivores take energy from herbivores, etc. However I do appreciate the sentiment of people feeding their ego, and I have definitely encountered people who are draining. I don't really think it is right to call this a bad thing however, I am just not a willing prey. Honestly I think most "spiritual teachers" are vampires.
