SGU wasn't cancelled due to low ratings. MGM at the time was in financial difficulties with a debt of about 3.5 billion dollars. They couldn't afford to produce the show & were not willing to release the rights to the franchise. SGU was a great show!

well all good things come to an end and the end was season 2 or what became season 2 about 10 episodes before the plug was pulled. Shame was beginning to get into it.
First you cancelled SG-1 to replace it with Eureka. Then you cancelled Atlantis, too. Well, I said, I'd watch SGU instead. And even though at first I was surprised by the nature of the show, I gradually came to like it. And now you want to terminate it???

What you all have to realize is that SGU was SUPPOSED to be different than SG1 and SGA. I like all three series, but I am really liking SGU because it's leading towards more of the bigger picture of everything (especially when you find out about Destiny's mission). It's also more "realistic" with emotions and what people would actually do under the circumstances, and it keeps you guessing with every episode.
I gave up on SGU half way through the first season as after 10 epidoes of nothing happening and no stop arguing, I am amazed that this show made it to a another season I thought it would of got axed.
When I first found out there was a season 2. I thought the gay script writer that wrote all the dramas must have sucked the executive producer's dick for another season. There can't have been any other way it's made it this far...
@borgqueenx Wow... SG-1 got so old eventually... I mean come on it was a good series but there are only so many story lines you can re-hash with the same witty one liners and subpar baddies. SG-U has taken things in a new direction, its fresh... if you want more SG-1 buy the DVD's.
@on3ofak1nd True, but even you have to admit, although the drama on the ship is interesting in its own way, some of the episodes honestly feel just like 'filler episodes'. Even if it was just slightly, there needs to be more action in this series whilst maintaining the same unique structure that makes it different from all the other repetitive stargate episodes. Its that balance that makes this series probably the hardest one so far to make with all the pressure from previous fans.
Stargate is the best television mankind has to offer, SGU has the greatest foundation of any series to date and the show is getting stronger by each episode. I just hope we are allowed to revel in another decade of Stargate.

@eastcow1 The crew has a purpose. The ancients are long gone and the ship explores for no reason. When it eventually dies out it would become a floating dead piece of metal. This way it benefits humanity. In real life a ship like that would be invaluable. Nothing we know of can travel to even a different solar system not to talk about hundreds of galaxies away. So yeah. If the ship is to have a purpose it needs them :). And the show is not bad. Its just deeper then the usual shallow scifi series
by the way , any suggestion of a good show like stargate universe that i can watch , even if it is couple of years old , as long as it is as good or better than this show .

@Senzune What the hell is the "kawoosh"? If you're referring to a view of the back of the ship when it jumps into FTL, you should've said that at the start. You want facts? Okay... better acting, much more character depth, the music is much better, and point of interest, is extremely emotional and captivating. Plus, why would they waste money on showing the "kawoosh", when they could spend it on the outstanding visual effects that we've seen so far? At least S2 will have more action, anyway.
@RealDougal The kawoosh is a very pivatol visual effect... I wouldn't mind seeing it more often, the SGU version is quite shiny. It isn't the FTL effect, it's the unstable vortex when the Stargate opens :) Carter nicknamed it.

This show is increadible! Of course I didn't fully realize that because this show was just starting while other tv shows were ending and getting more compelling. But it wasn't until I bought the hole first season when I truly got to experience just how good SGU really is. I suspect some people wont like the new filming style of SGU and I feel sorry for them because their missing out. Im learning not to judge a show like this from watching it on tv week to week but as a hole - At home!...

2. I've followed the making of the show and never heard about being unable to show the 'woosh. Not only have the actors and makers clarified during the initial promo that it's got the biggest budget of the SG shows but it's the biggest of any show broadcast on SyFy. So what you say seems very unlikely.
@Senzune Y'know there are useful sites that detail tv ratings in general. I suggest YOU search those as it seems to bare out what I say.
And yes they do have the highest budget. Presumebly spent on more detailed space affects, going to New Mexico and finding other locations rather simply relying of the same forests and arts & crafts towns in Vancouver.
Also they don't recycle as many establising shots or (seeing as you mentioned it) the kawoosh. Not to mention the higher profile cast wages.
Actualy the SGU's ratings for the first season are superior to both SG shows last two seasons. Of course that's not saying much as the sad fact as SG never had particlarly high ratings generaly avaeraging about 2 million a week. SGA had the best in the first season but had huge drop off in it's second.
Also SGU has the biggest budget of all the SG. That's been v. well documented it's costs about $2 million an episode. I think you need to get your facts straight.
Oh my GOODNESS PEOPLE! SGA was just a stupid cop out of Sg-1! get over it. Stargate did need a new direction in order to stay afloat. now.... SG-1 could have gone on FOREVER in my opinion, but SGA, was Meh. (i did buy all the seasons tho). I do preffer SGU over SGA. SGA ws a lame stargate SG-1 clone. Like reams of 4, Sheperd..... list goes on. Sgu is a new refreshment, and like common! Who didn't like VOYAGER!? EMH anyone? :)
@thestoriesofbob yeah i agree with you about voyager. it was and still is my fave spin off of star trek ever. janeway was a bad ass captain. anyway i thought sga was good despite the similarities to sg1. i didn't take to it at first but from the second season onwards it grew on me. i think sgu will be better in season 2 now everything is established.
anybody got a feeling SGU is going to take a more Voyager course of action in season 2, and in addition I think Young or Telford may actually have to kill Rush this time around.

@dtuj I don't mind humour, but I hope they don't remove too much of the "dark and realistic" side and replace it with Rodney McKay-type humour. It's good in small doses, or in a different type of show like SGA it fits very well, but I couldn't stand too much of it in what is supposed to be a more serious show. I watch this show because it's fresh and exciting in terms of Stargate, so I don't want the same old stuff to be added in TOO much. I really just like SGU the way it is.
@RealDougal Well lets see how they manage the dark and realistic side of SGU with the action and adventure side of old StarGate in season 2. To me in order for SGU to survive they need to have some sort of balance. Season 1 did not have it at all. Too much drama caused the bad ratings. SG:U is so interesting character-wise. It has a sense of depth in it that the other SG shows didn't have. Don't get me wrong, I absolutely love SG:1 and SG:A but there is something very different and unique about SG:U which makes it a really good show. I was sceptic in the beginning but then I watched it and fell in love. It has some really good philosophical and ethical issues to discuss. Also David Blue and Robet Carlyle are incredible

The fact is they are making a new trailer to show that SGU season 2 will have more action and adventure because nobody wants to see a space show with drama being the majority of your program. At least with this new trailer people who gave up on SGU might give it another chance. Plus you might get new viewers. I know that the drama will be there in SGU as well as more needed action, adventure, aliens and exploration.
@01000001011100100111 Yeah I remember both trailers for SGU and Caprica. They made it look like that both shows would be action pack even though Ron Moore told everybody that Caprica was a soap opera like Dallas. With SGU the season 1 trailer made it look like there was going to be a lot of action and that was not the case. A lot of people tuned in to see SGU but soon abandoned the show with the drama and slow build. Hopefully they learned their lesson for season 2 with the new trailer.
@dtuj I don't know about you, but I'd be happy seeing something like that if only some occasional action was included. SGU has done it very well so far, but what the haters fail to realise is that every show like SGU needs a good buildup, and the first part of season 1 did that very well, now it's time for more action. I can't wait to see how the confrontation with the Lucian Alliance plays out.

I mean I almost gave up on SGU, but I kept telling myself and my friends it will get better just bear with it. I love the franchise since the beginning so I stuck with it. Like you said and from what I hear there will be more action and excitement plus more aliens in season 2. I hope they get the drama right in season 2 as well, just don't force it. Seriously, how many episodes of SGA involved a virus or infection in the city? And, how many times did Rodney miraculously save the day at the very last second? They need to go to a galaxy, and find that it is dominated by a faction of bloodthirsty nox, who are at war with the furlings, who are at war with apoffus who had somehow survived, travled to that galaxy, and somehow taken over a large part of this glaxy by reprograming the replicators who were on the old ship with him when it crash landed to worship him as a god. That would really be epic.
They also need to get Daniel Jackson on that ship.

@Senzune Cheap Ripoff? Yet the special effects and character development are 100% better. SG-1 had some good character development. I didn't care about any of the characters in Atlantis as it was all so thin and too chop and change all the time (yet the Wraith were awesome). This show is great, I feel for the characters and it holds no punches. You are entitled to your opinion but give this show a chance and you will see it is the best yet. Reminds me of Firefly.

I like Stargate Universe so much, I have watched it like 5 times or more. Dr. Rush acting is very good. If anybody haven't watch Stargate movie, SG-1, and Atlantis in order, then you wouldn't understand this show is about.
@skypopear You can still watch this show. Just watch the 90's feature film to get the Wormhole travel. However the Lucian Alliance, communication stones etc are all from previous Stargate franchises. But they do add lines here and there to explain what things are.

Stargate is the best television mankind has to offer, SGU has the greatest foundation of any series to date and the show is getting stronger by each episode. I just hope we are allowed to revel in another decade of Stargate.

@eastcow1 The crew has a purpose. The ancients are long gone and the ship explores for no reason. When it eventually dies out it would become a floating dead piece of metal. This way it benefits humanity. In real life a ship like that would be invaluable. Nothing we know of can travel to even a different solar system not to talk about hundreds of galaxies away. So yeah. If the ship is to have a purpose it needs them :). And the show is not bad. Its just deeper then the usual shallow scifi series

@showan412 spartacus is great , i think they show a little too much nudity but man , it was so great that i saw the whole season in less than a week , there is the action the drama the beautiful girls the good looking men lol even though i am not gay . i am sure you will enjoy it , and you will be dying to see the next season in january , the hero had a cancer relapse , so he wont be in the next season , too sad , just hope he will be fine ,

@Senzune What the hell is the "kawoosh"? If you're referring to a view of the back of the ship when it jumps into FTL, you should've said that at the start. You want facts? Okay... better acting, much more character depth, the music is much better, and point of interest, is extremely emotional and captivating. Plus, why would they waste money on showing the "kawoosh", when they could spend it on the outstanding visual effects that we've seen so far? At least S2 will have more action, anyway.

@RealDougal The kawoosh is a very pivatol visual effect... I wouldn't mind seeing it more often, the SGU version is quite shiny. It isn't the FTL effect, it's the unstable vortex when the Stargate opens :) Carter nicknamed it.

You can only really appreciate how good this series actually is when you sit down rent/buy the first season and watch them all consecutively. I just finished watching season 1 and now am really anxious to see what happens next!! XD

This show is increadible! Of course I didn't fully realize that because this show was just starting while other tv shows were ending and getting more compelling. But it wasn't until I bought the hole first season when I truly got to experience just how good SGU really is. I suspect some people wont like the new filming style of SGU and I feel sorry for them because their missing out. Im learning not to judge a show like this from watching it on tv week to week but as a hole - At home!...

If you want to criticize the show on what you feel are faults fine. Lack of cheesiness, overt comedy, too dark it's all been said a thoasand times before by the staunch minority but it's prerogative.

2. I've followed the making of the show and never heard about being unable to show the 'woosh. Not only have the actors and makers clarified during the initial promo that it's got the biggest budget of the SG shows but it's the biggest of any show broadcast on SyFy. So what you say seems very unlikely.

@Senzune Y'know there are useful sites that detail tv ratings in general. I suggest YOU search those as it seems to bare out what I say.
And yes they do have the highest budget. Presumebly spent on more detailed space affects, going to New Mexico and finding other locations rather simply relying of the same forests and arts & crafts towns in Vancouver.
Also they don't recycle as many establising shots or (seeing as you mentioned it) the kawoosh. Not to mention the higher profile cast wages.

Actualy the SGU's ratings for the first season are superior to both SG shows last two seasons. Of course that's not saying much as the sad fact as SG never had particlarly high ratings generaly avaeraging about 2 million a week. SGA had the best in the first season but had huge drop off in it's second.
Also SGU has the biggest budget of all the SG. That's been v. well documented it's costs about $2 million an episode. I think you need to get your facts straight.

Oh my GOODNESS PEOPLE! SGA was just a stupid cop out of Sg-1! get over it. Stargate did need a new direction in order to stay afloat. now.... SG-1 could have gone on FOREVER in my opinion, but SGA, was Meh. (i did buy all the seasons tho). I do preffer SGU over SGA. SGA ws a lame stargate SG-1 clone. Like reams of 4, Sheperd..... list goes on. Sgu is a new refreshment, and like common! Who didn't like VOYAGER!? EMH anyone? :)

@thestoriesofbob yeah i agree with you about voyager. it was and still is my fave spin off of star trek ever. janeway was a bad ass captain. anyway i thought sga was good despite the similarities to sg1. i didn't take to it at first but from the second season onwards it grew on me. i think sgu will be better in season 2 now everything is established.

SGU has the potential but they wasted season 1 on a slow build that took too long. TPTB said there will be more action, aliens, adventure and exploration in season 2. For the franchise sake, I hope so. Oh yeah plus a little more humor too. Its still going to be a dark and realistic type character drama though. Lets see how they. balance it.

@dtuj I don't mind humour, but I hope they don't remove too much of the "dark and realistic" side and replace it with Rodney McKay-type humour. It's good in small doses, or in a different type of show like SGA it fits very well, but I couldn't stand too much of it in what is supposed to be a more serious show. I watch this show because it's fresh and exciting in terms of Stargate, so I don't want the same old stuff to be added in TOO much. I really just like SGU the way it is.

@RealDougal Well lets see how they manage the dark and realistic side of SGU with the action and adventure side of old StarGate in season 2. To me in order for SGU to survive they need to have some sort of balance. Season 1 did not have it at all. Too much drama caused the bad ratings. Im glad to hear or Im hoping what I hear is true with season 2 that there will be more action,adventure, aliens and exploration. I don't know, I just want to see something on SGU that makes me go HELL YEAH!!!!

SG:U is so interesting character-wise. It has a sense of depth in it that the other SG shows didn't have. Don't get me wrong, I absolutely love SG:1 and SG:A but there is something very different and unique about SG:U which makes it a really good show. I was sceptic in the beginning but then I watched it and fell in love. It has some really good philosophical and ethical issues to discuss. Also David Blue and Robet Carlyle are incredible

@dtuj I don't need anyone to do anything. As long as the ratings mean the show will stay on for a good few years (no matter how average they are), then I don't give a shit. Besides, Robert Carlyle says he is prepared to play the role for many years, so I don't think there's anything to worry about; it looks like they have the show planned out for years to come.

The fact is they are making a new trailer to show that SGU season 2 will have more action and adventure because nobody wants to see a space show with drama being the majority of your program. At least with this new trailer people who gave up on SGU might give it another chance. Plus you might get new viewers. I know that the drama will be there in SGU as well as more needed action, adventure, aliens and exploration.

@01000001011100100111 Yeah I remember both trailers for SGU and Caprica. They made it look like that both shows would be action pack even though Ron Moore told everybody that Caprica was a soap opera like Dallas. With SGU the season 1 trailer made it look like there was going to be a lot of action and that was not the case. A lot of people tuned in to see SGU but soon abandoned the show with the drama and slow build. Hopefully they learned their lesson for season 2 with the new trailer.

@dtuj I don't know about you, but I'd be happy seeing something like that if only some occasional action was included. SGU has done it very well so far, but what the haters fail to realise is that every show like SGU needs a good buildup, and the first part of season 1 did that very well, now it's time for more action. I can't wait to see how the confrontation with the Lucian Alliance plays out.

@RealDougal I don't mind a build up but the build up to me really dragged in the first half of season 1. I mean I almost gave up on SGU, but I kept telling myself and my friends it will get better just bear with it. I love the franchise since the beginning so I stuck with it. Like you said and from what I hear there will be more action and excitement plus more aliens in season 2. I hope they get the drama right in season 2 as well, just don't force it. Plus some SGA guys are coming :-)

Seriously, how many episodes of SGA involved a virus or infection in the city? And, how many times did Rodney miraculously save the day at the very last second? To actually "want" to see that for (possibly many years) in another SG series is fucking insane! I welcome change! SGU is the future of Stargate, like it or not, I don't care.

They need to go to a galaxy, and find that it is dominated by a faction of bloodthirsty nox, who are at war with the furlings, who are at war with apoffus who had somehow survived, travled to that galaxy, and somehow taken over a large part of this glaxy by reprograming the replicators who were on the old ship with him when it crash landed to worship him as a god. That would really be epic.
They also need to get Daniel Jackson on that ship.

@Senzune Cheap Ripoff? Yet the special effects and character development are 100% better. SG-1 had some good character development. I didn't care about any of the characters in Atlantis as it was all so thin and too chop and change all the time (yet the Wraith were awesome). This show is great, I feel for the characters and it holds no punches. You are entitled to your opinion but give this show a chance and you will see it is the best yet. Reminds me of Firefly.

I like Stargate Universe so much, I have watched it like 5 times or more. Dr. Rush acting is very good. If anybody haven't watch Stargate movie, SG-1, and Atlantis in order, then you wouldn't understand this show is about.

@skypopear You can still watch this show. Just watch the 90's feature film to get the Wormhole travel. However the Lucian Alliance, communication stones etc are all from previous Stargate franchises. But they do add lines here and there to explain what things are.
