I always interpreted this song as being about a woman who's in love with a married man.

and right you may be. In fact, that is the exact interpretation that I gathered...BUT I went with an alternative interpretation for this artistic project. If you look closely, this line now is about a woman being in love with a man who does not belong to her fully. He belongs as much (if not more) to the cause in which he is fighting. In fact it is the war that he died for. You see this ring following him all throughout this film. "He (indeed) BELONGED to someone" else.
