Actually, I am not being a smart ass. Rather I am simply explaining that the Vatican Library and Archives are open to qualified scholars. If you think they are hiding something because access is restricted to those scholars who have a valid reason for their research, you are wrong.
The libraries of many institutions around the world employ similar restrictions because of the value of the texts they contain.
I'm curious. If you had access, where would you begin?

Of course but that is the nature of high level scholarship. Before you visit the Vatican Library or Archives you must go through a rigorous vetting process because in the past priceless documents have been stolen and sold on the open market.
Do you imagine that you can waltz into the U.S. National Archives or Smithsonian Library or archives of the Library of Congress and pull any book or document off the shelf?
I will tell you that you will find that impossible.

Indeed, some of the material is available online. If you're interested go to vatican.va and select from 8 different languages. Then you can choose to enter either the Vatican Library, Museums or Secret Archives and see the material they have preserved there. However, remember that the Archives have more than 50 miles of shelving while the Library has more than 30 miles of shelving. Not all of this material has been properly organized for viewing.
