Its not that their characters are weak. Its their personalities, combined with the lack of screentime. Arwen's personality was kind of, soft. But shes obviously quite strong. Mean,, she threw half a river at those riders.

My favorite part was Helm's Deep. That whole hour just blew me away from beginning to end.

At first they really built up the nerves with the orcs doing their haka or whatever. And the whole battle after was just awesome =)

Otherwise, the first movie was the best in my opinion. The scenes in Rivendell are really something special. Im interested in architecture, so Ive always wondered what Rivendell looked like ever since I read the books. Would be really nice to build something like that.

Well you know, its a mythological world. Tolkien borrowed much from western & northern european mythology, which was created thousands of years ago on to the 12th century. You'll notice if you watch movies like Nibelung and Arthur. So, that would explain the medieval hint =)
