  • Now time to educate you music crazy kids! The first two verses of this song, and the general theme, and tone, are based on the WIlliam Blake poem "London". " I wander thro’ each charter’d street, Near where the charter’d Thames does flow, And mark in every face I meet Marks of weakness, marks of woe. In every cry of every Man, In every Infant’s cry of fear, In every voice, in every ban, The mind-forg’d manacles I hear. "
  • absoloute pure class noel gallagher is better but this cannot be argued with beats liams voice hands down and liam is my favourite front man of all time but you cant argue the fact aschcroft is the better singer just listen to him singing bs symphony at live 8 and ull see what i mean

  • great but underrated band

thousand times better than commercial crap called muse

  • I want those sunglasses.

  • please what does the line "jumped out on my bail" mean? I've found just the expression "jump bail" in the dictionary - is it the same? thx

  • Sang with meaning and from the heart !!! outstanding

  • Mad Richie should get together with Noel Gallagher, two songwriting masters of our time!

  • @cotchford1969 I couldn't agree more... However I think their two massive egos would probably stop that from ever happening even though they are friends apparently...

  • real music.......sang from the heart.....fuck you simon, louie, this shit cant be manufactured...............this shit gives me goose pimples i love it

  • the 5 people who have disliked this need their heads looking at !

  • This song will be in my life's soundtrack.

  • Brilliant!

  • beats the x factor

  • Esta ElEgAntE.. cvr altok namas... jeje

  • When I get a movie made about me, it'll have the Verve as the soundtrack.

  • Ashcroft has really inspired my own songwriting :) I wish he'd go back to that awesome rock/ soulful side rather than his new stuff :/ His work with the Verve really punches a hole in my life. I'll always remember the Verve's brilliance.

  • I'm sat at work listening to youtube videos in the back ground, with tears of joy running down my face. Love this song!

  • This is awesome!

  • Me and my mate both got it's you and me we're history tattooed on our chests fuckin love this song!!!

  • absolute magic

  • I absolutely dig this song, but the other day I heard "Mind Games" by John Lennon.........

  • @MrJuve71 ....the string arrangement is almost identical......still love the tune..proper.

  • I'm not religious but if Richard Ashcroft and/or The Verve ever became a cult I would be first in line with all my worldly possessions and ATM card in hand :)=

  • Masterpiece

  • third best singer ever after lennon and liam

  • One a the best songs ever written.

    Fuck what anyone else says.

  • stumbled accross The Verve watching a music tv channel and had them at Glastonbury playing Lucky Man, which I had never heard before, nor the band for that matter. Drinking many beers, I totally rocked out to these guys!! Great find. This lead singer is awesome. Love the attitude, and these words I can actually relate to. Hope others get to know this band by accident like I did. I hope to see you live anytime you come close!

  • wow the verve are really good live never knew

  • Who cares what the public taste is - this is awesome - nuff said

  • im glad they had the viola intro when they played this at v. the screech were immense, mental intro

  • Beautiful....

  • it´s a killer u gota luv it +..

  • voice!!!!!!!

  • nick macabe must be some sort of 'shaman' of the guitar. the sounds he comes up with are unbelievably beautiful.

  • Comment removed

  • What he does (ie the slide on the pinky) is usually reserved for classicaly trained guitarists, except he's monopolised expertise of what can happen when technology is applied to guitar. He allegedly isn't all that keen on playing guitar, although when people called him into question as he doesn't play traditional solos the Verve did 'Echo Bass' and pissed on that notion good and proper. He's amazing.

  • krasny song

  • MINT!!!

  • 17u23

    Petacchi toont vorm in Sardinië

  • Melvin Platje!

  • i am a fucking yank from the icy midwest. i love to winter wander around where the thames does flow. the fucking sun popped out. brilliant. this song does it for me. history.

  • ekskwizit

  • this song has saved my life

  • @weallstandasone Keep the faith mate x

  • The Verve are amazing live! I just think that Richard Ashcroft is really talented

  • by far the best voice in the music.. yaeh richard.. keep on flying.. happy weekend to you all

  • They just don't write 'em like this anymore, a true Classic!

    Lily Allen...I Fuckin ask ya??

She'll probably be on Pox-Factor in a few weeks when she runs outta songs or lyric?? heh heh heh!

  • Got ta agree with RickRick13, Lily Allen sucks that hairy root and has ruined a great clash song too.

  • oi oi oi what a voice.

  • London by William Blake (1792)

I wander thro each charterd street,

Near where the charterd Thames does flow,

And mark in every face I meet

Marks of weakness, marks of woe.

In every cry of every Man,

In every Infants cry of fear,

In every voice, in every ban,

    The mind-forgd manacles I hear.

  • I'll never grasp the logic of public taste... we live in a world where Lily Allen, X Factor, Pixie Fricking Lott rise to the top, where a song as majestic as this barely causes a blip...

  • I agree with your sentiments, verve a british treasure, quite like some of lilly allens stuff tho

  • Isn't that a bit like saying you like Led Zeppelin AND the Spice Girls?!!!

  • Lily Allen is good tho to be fair to her, she has the sort of view point of 'us', and has also come through the 'Britrock' Verve, Roses, Mondays school of music we came through. Considering she's a bit of a mockney, I really do rate her.

  • Have to agree to disagree there my friend... struggle to see any attraction in Lily Allen - she can't sing, doesn't write her own songs and is a sort of vacuous, Peaches Geldof-esque pretentious rent-a-gob who would be working in Asda if she didn't have a famous Dad! Can't stand her!

  • never a more true statement mate, all this fuckin crap kicking about at the mo'

this song is a moment of sheer brilliance..

  • yep dude u got it, a moment of sheer brilliance. couldnt say it better.

  • @RickRick13 most people into "music" are sheep and are told to follow the going trend by the media, you my friend, have the beautiful gift of finding music for yourself with open ears and an open mind.

  • @RickRick13 verve maun arn;t mass tv taste for numb fuks!!!!once verve hits ya their ain't no top!!!!

  • @RickRick13 i know, its fucked up mate, i have given up trying to psyco analize it.

  • @RickRick13

As older people don't buy records. Sorry to be so blunt, but it's true.

If 30 somethings bought a lot of music, this stuff would sell

  • No good people in their 30s lecturing people who buy the music, about what music they should buy..............

The people who buy music decide who's popular.

  • This is the poem that it's based on.

    London by William Blake

I wander thro’ each charter’d street,

Near where the charter’d Thames does flow,

And mark in every face I meet

Marks of weakness, marks of woe.

In every cry of every Man,

In every Infant’s cry of fear,

In every voice, in every ban,

    The mind-forg’d manacles I hear.

  • regardles of everything...hes still the best live preformer at glast full stop........our souls are real and not made in china...they are made on planet earth..a small speck of dust in the great scheme of things but needless to say still an important part of an endless wounder.know your place.you are everything and everything is a part of you

  • It's shame Bitter sweet Symphony is their signature song. By all means this should be, it's a better song IMO.

  • Fucking Amazing... A classic song of our time ...

  • Richard Ashcroft in the best singer in the world. No doubt about it. A superb song to match a superb band.

  • This is one of those truly genius songs. Quite underrated for ow good it is, but I'm with that. I quite like the idea of being one of the few who knows such an incredible tune.

  • simply the best band of ma time, will always listen and relate to these classics!

  • Hey Buckets, could not agree with you more. Can you please tell me how to get a hold of audio for the big UK festivals? I would absolutely love to have this in my sweaty little palms!

  • if you stick "the verve live download" or "the verve live at Haigh Hall" into google you might get a nice suprise ;-)

this also applies for "oasis live at southsea download" aswell cos Slideaway from that "live by the sea" concert in 95 is one of the best pieces of live music i've heard in my life.

    happy hunting bro ;-)

  • I got the wigan gig in 98 on cd from ebay for a fiver, bargain! And downloaded the glasto '08 performance from internet, easy to find, or just try ebay and stick it on itunes.

  • gran cancion de amor, la voz de richard en esta version es realmente muy buena, hasta quedo bien con los fuegos artificiales de fondo

hay algun dvd de este recital?

  • one of the greatest songs of all time

  • I think Ashcrofts voice sounds awesome, great singer

  • the fact that his voice aged makes this sounds a million times more nostalgic than the original. either way, this song's a classic.

  • My favourite song probably. I love 'Mad Richard'. On a par with Nirvana...I know slightly diff style but love em both. Ashcroft is the most stunning 'live' singer...search 'on your own' the verve. awesome

  • best

  • william blake and richard ashcroft.. puuure class

  • genius

  • This song is masterpiece. So beautiful, emotional , heart breaking. And i think that if I have never listened to History, I would be someone other. .....My song.

  • Chords like Live forever of Oasis?

  • No, they're not the same. Both starts on a G though, I think.

  • Comment removed

  • History is G, D, A, E as opposed to G, D, Am, C, D for Live Forever... your chords aren't spot on, but your taste is! Probably the two best songs of the 90's, two of the best songs ever!

  • beautiful

  • "to live today

    so why not smile

    don't dream away..."

Isn't this the best rock song ever?

At least for me the best song ever!

  • i agree

  • I put the album version on youtube but man, this live version blows the original out of the water. Ashcroft's voice, McCabe's amazing guitar... classic Verve!

  • McCabe is the best guitarist of his generation.....

  • It's as if the darkness falls on the vast sea of hidden faces and the beauty of the night dotted by shimmering lights is only existent for them, so that the music can emanate with justice.

Even though the darkness drowns out the individuals, the presence of so many people at an event of such magnitude can't be ignored, which is why it bewilders me that they can stand infront of such a crowd and play in comfort.

What respect they receive and deserve...

  • what a comment!

  • Its so brilliant that i cant set word for it.. i play verves song over and over and just cant stop its

such a good inside emotional loaded feeling i get..

The tunes and richards way of singing just makes it so amazing good..

This is pure timeless underrated music that

kicks all the crap music of todays poplist with

    no feeling whats so ever..

  • i played this at a gig last night and half the folk there had never heard of it, one of the best rock ballads ever written...easy. Good to see Ashcrofts voice has not gone the same way as Liam CLASS

  • actually liam's voice it's better now. as good as ten years ago tbh.

  • Liam's voice is actually very poor now. I seen them a few months ago and it was awful. Sad to say.

  • no you didn't and no it's not. ffs you weren't at wembley stadium or any of the stadium gigs , fucking brilliant i must say.

  • UHHH yes i did seen them on their latest tour idiot. his voice is shot and he keeps stepping back from the mic before he can even finish the verse. he needs to retire. I am looking forward to a Noel Gallagher solo career.

  • i did see them! oh by the way Noel Just left the band, becasue Liam is garbage. Can't wait for that Noel receord.

  • haha, certainly not as good as ten years ago, but yeah it's a bit better

  • awesome tune and set for Sunday Glastonbury closer...

  • i still love this tune... evver since i got it in 94 ona demo...fuckin brilliant wheres me guitar

  • in a tune like this.. the guitars pretty simple tbh, but its the lyrics! so meaninful man

  • the rhythm is pretty simple, but this is a perfect example of what mccabe brings to the verve...listen to what he's doing with his bit as the song moves on...just perfection. they also didn't use the string intro in this show like they did at chelmsford & other festivals last year.

  • Of how I loved and how I failed ..

  • In the zone!

  • absolutely in the zone! better than the version on the record.

  • best song from the hand of Richard , and lyrics from william blake, or a little bit - but so great because hes a poet also R:A..

his songs - lyrics - formance- just a journey into your mind.. i think.. nice day

    to all..

  • AMAZING Video! TwilightGarden, you are the man for uploading this! I love your collection of live Verve stuff. Keep it up!

  • Ashcroft is THE best Artsist of modern times,

FFS lets face it, who else can portray every emotion a human can feel within a performance of one song, no one else, but Richard can,

the man is a living legend, an absolute and utter legend,

Richard, i bow to your superior higher being,

and 'i hope you know that i am me............................................................'

  • bittersweet sympany is just absolutly incredible, but this is close!

  • awesome

  • awesome

  • ashcroft is a sage man !!the way he can condence emotion +pain beauty and let it flow into a tune is masterfull as do the band .

  • They have never sounded better live than this!

  • wow i want this on a cd or dvd!

  • SAME HERE!!! if you ever find out about any MP3s of this gig, you know who to let know first, right?!

  • Great lyrics! Touching!

  • what a voice!!!

  • A great song, the modern day John Lennon sings

  • they should release another album, just live performances.... the verve's studio albums - brilliant.

    the verve live - unbelievable!

    they saved glastonbury this year!

  • noelrok is history verve live forever!!!!

  • This song wasnt written by Nick but it wasnt written by Richard. IT WAS WRITTEN BY THE VERVE !!!!!

  • fuck off...

  • go do it urself if u fink were sheep...

  • "The bed ain't made, but it's still full of hope, I've got a skin full of dope." Classic line...so true of users; there's a silver lining in every cloud. Wicked tune.

  • Alternative rock has been given a bit of revival lately...first the Verve and Stone Temple Pilots reunite, now rumors has it that Blur, Faith No More and My Bloody Valentine are doing the same. If that is the case, then the world will be a better place.

  • great song even better lyrics..

  • McCabe has fuck all to do with this track,

Richard wrote the lyrics, the melody and the rythm for this,

this is Richies track and not Nick's,

keemon the Richyy bhoy, Verve till i die!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • Nick really did improve this song with the way he added the slide to the song. By the way, do not DISRESPECT NICK MCCABE EVER AGAIN!!!!!!

  • bollocks
