halpern is the most overated drummer like ever, he's good but blah there are others that crush him in everyway i have no idea how people think he's super great? he's good not amazing
@DANnJORDAN You obviously don't understand why he has big kit. It's literally a piano in drum form. Every tom is tuned to a certain tone and he could play many piano songs on that drum set. He is not you're typical drummer So that's probably why you think he sucks.
@DANnJORDAN I have no clue lol. I like his solos they sound pretty cool. But some of them aren't that great but I'm sure all drummers have their pros and cons.
@psychodrumplayer14 I dont like him because I went to see him play at a clinic and he was so cocky and arrogant. He didn't really play a solo, he just hit drums really.
HAHAHA! Unintentional polyrhythm with clapping and stick hitting at 3:10! Just thought I'd point that out. I catch myself doing clapping polyrhythms at ceremonies and other important shows that has applauding. I am a poly-noob by the way.
Terry Bozio? Interviewing Matt Halpern? That is ass backwards. Terry must be really jealous that Matt unleashes a 10x more powerful wave of sound than he does while using 50 less drums and cymbals. Definitely a good drummer, but I find his music very very tasteless. Periphery \m/
@HELLPERN - Please switch to this ride PERMANENTLY. I think it handles your crashing much better than the Soundcaster... The dryer ping is really nice too. Plus, it looks medieval.
@Periphery THE SAND RIDE!??? even better! probably not the most durable thing in the world, but it'll sound perfect while it lasts! very happy about this decision...
@markpopkie Hes using sand hats in this vid and he fell in love with them too, so hes getting a set of those as well! We are so lucky that Meinl takes such good care of Matt!
@Periphery if you guys ever get this i have a question for matt. have you guys used these cymbals at all for recording material? if not, do you plan to in the future? the dry stuff sounds amazing and compliments matt's playing really well. just my opinion.
@4444HD Dunno if anyone's told you yet, but that's how you generally learn music. You count it. Terry Bozzio can drum circles around 99% of the drummers on this planet, and has played with some of the most talanted and prolific artists of the last century (like Frank Zappa, maybe you've heard of him?), so I seriously doubt you can, in any way, justify calling him a "retard".
@Nexus07music You're in luck, check out some of Periphery's recent updates on Facebook and Twitter, they've been tracking real drums this time around. They put up a second and a half clip, not much but they definitely sound good!
i love this interview just for the fact that a 2-piece drumset EXCELLENT DRUMMER is teaching how to play drums to a 23434325-piece drumset CRAPPY DRUMMER. kudos to the one who decided terry to interview him.
I may very well be in the minority, but I very much prefer Halpern over Bozzio. I feel like Matt tends to show more musicality than what I've seen from Terry Bozzio. For my musical taste, he strikes the perfect balance between playing something difficult and playing something that compliments the music.
That's not to say Terry Bozzio isn't incredible, of course. But every time I see something about Terry Bozzio, he's the center of attention. I'd rather see a band made up of equals.
@supermilo100 Yeah, but what's the logic behind it. I don't go to band practice and say "well I decided to take 2 strings off my guitar because I can."
@StewieSwan point taken, however, the two instruments are very different, obviously. Matt chooses to keep a simplistic kit, maybe because that's all he needs or that's all he wants to play. As I said previously, your kit layout is just down to personal preference.
@StewieSwan Because the big kit isn't necessary for him. This is all he needs to play the songs to both his and the band's satisfaction, and limiting yourself for choice can really boost your creativity, making the absolute most of every part of your kit.
@StewieSwan bro if you NEED a big kit behind you to actually play well, you clearly haven't grasped the the basics behind playing the drums. And i say "need" sincerely. Drums are all about keeping a rhythm and a feel...the more toms and bells and whistles you have just distracts from the actual point of the music (unless of course, you're Terry - in his very musical style). Furthermore, did you not watch the video?! Did you not grasp the insanity behind what Matt could do on a small kit?!
@cadrums I'm not a drummer, I don't NEED a kit of any kind. I just don't understand the logic of limiting what you can do for no good reason. Why not have 2 more toms? It's not like they'd stop you from playing what you're already doing. They just give you more options.
@StewieSwan It started because the less gear you bring on tour, the better. He got his kit as simple as possible so there would be less to lug around and less to setup everyday, and now hes just used to this setup He has tried adding more toms to his kit, but just feels more comfortable on the 1 tom kit.
@Baseballchampion Travis Baker is very nervous and physic on his kit and very inspired by stewart copeland's punk beats and matt is visceral like Traver barker but his technic is wowooo awesome...
Bozzio the man known for having uber extravagant hella' huge drum sets showing respect to Halpern implementing everything out of about as minimalistic a set as you can get. Matt you definitely show it's not how much you got but how you use it.... very nice!!!
Hey everyone, thank you very much for all of the support... Just wanted to comment - Terry was reading off of a teleprompter because the questions were coming in live from viewers - he's also a legend and a great guy, so lets be nice... Also, the drum set I am using is Gregg Bissonette's custom Mapex kit... Sounded awesome. Thanks again for watching, and please feel free to share the video any where you'd like!
Tbf I can hear some parallels between Matt's playing & Bozzios clave-like grooves especially on Vai's Sex & Religion. However Halpern can do so much more with so much less. Love his playing.
Soooooo happy that Matt is finally getting recognized in the drum community as a whole! He's a massive influence on me 'cause his playing always feels simply incredible. He completely redefined a style of groove his own way, separating "feel" and "time" like a reggae guy, yet under insanely physically demanding conditions!
Good interview from Matt but Terry has got to be the worst interviewer I have seen in A LONG time. He reads the teleprompter like a noob and whenever Matt was talking he kept doing the "uh huh" and "mm hmmm" in a tone that sounded like "don't tell me brah, I already know that" almost like he felt uncomfortable that matt was "teaching" him even though he was just answering the question... and than he had to do the gay ass "1 2 3 4 5" and "yeah".
@GuitardedMark i agree. i feel that unfortunately because terry comes from generation of very accomplished drummers he sorta seems to believe that despite the constant evolution in musicality of drummers, theres nothing left for him to learn. i mean no ones going to argue that bozzio isn't a ridiculously good drummer but i've always found that he tries to assert himself over musicians as opposed to gelling with them and actually trying to understand where they're coming from stylistically.
@GuitardedMark Well, a nicer guy than Bozzio is rarely found and if you know some history on Bozzio, watched some videos of him, actually seen what he can do/does - he knows EXACTLY what Matt is talking about and more. But hey! You're probably another drone to the social protocols.. and I just obeyed one of them - bashing you for your opinions which happens not to be fitting to mine. Sorry! But I mean it though..
@Drangsland He may be "nice" but he's still a cocky bastard that loses credibility by his "know it all" attitude.
