Do you know where I can get the Eureka! (The Masters of Cinema Series) release?
i think I ran across someone else who had been searching for this for a long time when I was & sent them the link.
Yes, like films you have showing.
I'm not good at answering what's your favorite movie, or painting or piece of music ... I do favor different genres but love individuals pieces separately & differently. Strangely enough the 2 movies I have mentioned when pushed for favourites are Casablanca & this.
you are so nice to people when they leve a message. This is my fourth favorite movie this and seven samuria. My dad thingks it's stupid but i told him the shu the hell up you don't need to watch it. I love this movie!
Eh.. Thanks.. Gotta admit I'm logging in on youtube less and less nowdays.. Sigh.. And yes, I love the movie too, as well as the written stories it's based on. Thanks for the comment :)
Finally, found this. I love this movie. For last couple of years it has my favourite. It is a visual masterpiece. Could read book. It stands one it's own.
Indeed it's a classic and did you know this movie influenced the 1990 horror anthology Tales from The Darkside The Movie on the final story only with a gargoyle instead of a snow vampire spirit?
Okay, Oh geez I can't believe I found this video! My Japanese teacher played this in my Japanese class today and I really liked the song so I went home and searched for it and what do you know! I found it! Wonderful video! I mean it must be great for my teacher to show it to us!
Hi! Very good video! I have MoC edition of Kwaidan and its very great! Great sound, quality, extra-booklet, menu, everything! This is definitely one of the greatest films ever made! 5/5 video.
Lo, while I disagree about this video.. I pretty much agree with you on the movie's awesomeness :D The converstaion in the end of the booklet was veeery interesting.
Kwaidan is the old pronunciation, according to Lafcadio Hearn (Koizumi Yakumo), the author of the book the movie was based on (it was written in 1904) . Only two of the segments in this movie are actually in the book, Yuki-Onna and Mimi-Nashi-Hoichi. In a Cup of Tea is from the book Kotto. I have not found The Black Hair in any other Hearn books, however my collection is far from complete.
My DVD came with a booklet that has all the four original stories.. Hmm, I believe I've seen Kwaidan in the library sometime. I haven't read it myself though. But I do have read one of Lafcadio's books. Just don't remember its title. But it had two of the stories that are in this movie.
Mine is a Eureka! (The Masters of Cinema Series) release. And yeap, that's the extended edition. The booklet is really good. 73 pages! It has a small biography of Lafcadio Hearn, an introduction to Kwaidan, the four stories and a very interesting interview (or more like a coversation) with Masaki Kobayashi. And there seems to be a translation of The Heart Sutra on the last page too (the sutra painted upon Hoichi's body)
That is awesome! Is that version available in the United States or is it a European or Japanese release only? Excellent choice for the music by the way, Tool is such a great band.
This is a great movie but this compilation video was put together very poorly and it's annoying how many times the screen flashes to each scene only lasting a few seconds each time.
Yeah, I think you're right, and I can see many more flaws too (such as the weird clip-selection). Although, as my defense I have to say this is one of my earlier works.. However, thank you for commenting =)
ever seen Seppuku by the same director? It's black/white but it looks as good as this one. especially, the duel scene on the street is IMO one of the top 5 of all time. Kobayashi really created his own world. I like him even better than Kurosawa even though I know Kurosawa was more innovative and influential.
I've been planning to watch some Japanese classics by the both directors but I'm just too much into modern movies right now. Plus, it's hard to find those old Japanese movie in here :/ I know about Seppuku though and I'd very much like to see it sometime.
great video. normally i dont watch alot of homemade videos for song because they dont make sense.but this one was very nice.great song and great movie.asian have always made great horror films.i like all 4 stories especailly "woman of the snow".
Thanks. This took a lot of effort.. And wow, there's actually someone who has seen this movie!.. Hmm, I liked the first one (The Black Hair) the best.
Wow... that must have taken loads of effort... I didn't know that Tool's songs were that long~ Superb timing, as usual ;) I loved the flashing thing at the end, and the swirling colours~! Awesome job!!

Which version do you own? I have the Criterion version and it certainly did not come with a booklet. I have heard that there is a longer version.

it's kaidan, not kwaidan lol

Both titles do. My DVD cover says "Kwaidan" but I know it's called "Kaidan" sometimes (maybe more often)

By far THE most underrated movie/director of all time.

Agreed! It's really a shame people don't know about this fantastic piece of epic art :P

Most of Kurosawa films should be easy to find. He's famous unlike Kobayashi.

It's a pitty they wont educate younger generation about this film by re releasing it.

So much better than kurosawa's 'dreams'.
