Reagan is gone, and now Buckley. I hope they ask God, on our behalf, for successors. We certainly will need someone to fill the big empty boots left behind. Godspeed Bill.

Reagan was a disaster ... and a war criminal. He supported, philosophically, militarily and financially, some of the most horrible states of the 20th century. Buckley was his apologist and mythologist. Good riddance to them both.
A woman from Romania said once, "We put all of our hope in Ronald Reagan and he did it." She was speaking at the Ronald Reagan visitation in Simi Valley, summer 2004. That night, many others left notes on a table crowded with flowers. One from an El Salavadoran man said, "Thank you for giving me my freedom." (But I guess he was just a flack for the Right, huh?) Show a little common courtesy; could perhaps your ad hominem at least wait until we bury our friend?
Bill Buckley liked to use that phrase a lot "ad hoc ad hominem" and also "it-so-facto."
I could not understand a word he said when I was a teenager but when I got into my late 20s he seemed like a guy who made a lot of sense.
He enjoyed his life and his work and he was quoted as saying, "Politics should be fun." Some commentators today are offensively pompous while Bill was charmingly pompous. His personality was his signature.
To Raconteur68: There's a big difference between supporting the people of a country and supporting the regime which rules over them. I'd be very interested in hearing how a "El Salavadoran" (sic) gained his freedom through Reagan. The US didn't liberate El Salvador - it supported a brutal military junta which was patently contemptuous of the freedoms we ostensibly hold so dear. Large numbers of Salvadorans FLED their country in the 80s to escape the repression financed by the US government.

Pffft! Who cares who has the higher IQ? Just because Buckley wasn't a troglodyte like Limbaugh, Reagan or Bush is no reason to assume he was anything other than an apologist for war criminals foreign and domestic. He was an imperialist and free market fundamentalist who supported the military coup against Allende and the rise of Pinochet. He opposed the civil rights movement and even blamed the Watts riots on Martin Luther King!
I'll second those comments, what a brilliant mind. Visit Amazon, see how many books, articles, ect you find. There are about 6 pages of material from THIS century alone. Amazing man!
I just love this guy. It is so sad that so few such intellects exist. William F Buckley RIP.

I believe it's "ipso facto" which is Latin for "by the fact itself."

Robin Williams does a good and respectful parody of Buckley in the Disney movie Aladdin.
It would be great if some one could get that clip up on YouTube.

You could add up the IQ's of every liberal pundit to ever walk this planet and the sum total wouldn't even be close to that of Buckleys.'
