  • hmmmm...I kinda don't like his style.

  • is it just me or did the first soloist in introducing the first solo, at 0:59 did he add an extra note. The solo is suppose to be f a e g d g, climbing down, but he climbed down from A., thus resulting in having to play a triplet instead of two 16ths to make up for the extra note.

  • Not the best performance, no. 1. They play too fast overall. 2. They (the guy especially) seems to be too hectic.

  • my god just wish i ould play the violin like her....

  • Rachel Podger's hair is awesome :)

  • It has nothing to do with the key that Bach wrote in. If you were reading the music, the key signature would be the same. It' s the pitch that is different. They are playing at Baroque pitch,

    A 415, not A440.

  • @idasusanhedges People often write "I wish I could play like him (or her)" but I wish I could recognise that Baroque pitch also. ;~)

  • the man makes mistakes in rhythms and plays apogiaturas there there's nothing. Moreover, there no balance with the musical level between him an the 2nd violin, who is really good. Royalty Free Classical Music Symphony Orchestra, under the direction of Dr. Keith J. Salmon, THIS one is really better, enonciating, and showing differents articulations of score voices. And here, no mistakes in 1st violin !!!!!!

  • @alexmckee123 They're playing this in the key Bach wrote it in. Everything's a half-step lower.

  • wrong key..not nice!

  • That guy moves way too much. I understand he's conducting the orchestra, but it's distracting and funny to watch.

  • all that sawing away , and nothing happening . two bores.

  • I expect a bit better intonation and less misses on this level. And the tempo is leaning in every direction.

  • Thanks. Good stuff.

  • Wowww. They were playing so so so good. And there was a REAL harpsichord at the back, could hear its tinkling sound.

  • i like Manze and even bought the cd

  • Ugh, I really dislike the little personal twists Manze adds to the solos. They just make the song sound off to me

  • Why is this performance in C# minor, not D minor?!

  • @SpudIllusionPictures It IS in D minor! They tune their instruments in the Baroque pitch (A = 415 Hz) rather than the modern pitch (A = 440 Hz).

  • @VERITS99 Ah! Thanks!

  • @neskoncnost How do you know if this is not just the way Bach intended this piece to be played and you are wrong? How can you be so sure of your statement?

  • Why is Andrew Manze so stiff when playing this? 0.o

  • i dont think hes messing up i think hes just adding some spice

  • Minutes 1:00 to 1:04, Manze playing, he messed up.

  • @chinitowon it's not that he's messing up.. baroque sheet music is just usually a guid line. For the most part the soloist are free to play the peice however they damn well please, wich is why baroque music (solist) a lot of improv in the music or recording they play. This particiular video has a crap load or inprov that it's completly obvious and not writen in the music itself (i have the music and have played it myself) and 1:00 to 1:04 would be part of that "improv" in how he's playing it.

  • so strange..

  • How annoying that guys moves too much when he plays.

  • Man! They made that look fun to play.

  • @VaniaEmerald do you notice something else? you try playing a baroque violin! no chin or shoulder rest and take a good look at the bow.

  • @VaniaEmerald yes the male violinist icant count!!!! or read music for that matter! hes coming in WAY to late

  • @VaniaEmerald I think he's trying to hold onto the note for full value/extend it. I've heard it a few times on other recordings, but this one sounds really off.

  • @Nukefuzion This is not your "regular" violin. its a special type of violin that's meant to be tuned half step down, so the strings from lowest to highest are: F, C#, G#, and D#

  • @Warlias97 What are you referring to?

I was talking about note value/rhythm, not pitch.

Did you reply to the wrong person?

  • Respond to this video... Very old style.... my viola teacher has one of those.

  • Bach is sexy - that's for sure.

  • what a treat to hear what it would actually have sounded like back then!

  • congratuletions

  • this rendition is amazing. but Manze is a bit disappointing here

  • excellent!!!

  • I love Rachel . I have many cd . I love her clear and crystal sound. Her Vivaldi Stravaganza is heavenly.

But I prefer to listen her and not to watch her . Why she agitate and shake herself so much while she's playing , in so much funny way? And her partner Manze too...

They do not communicate the solemnity and the emotion of what are playing .

It's seems they are introducing " Henry the Horse dances the Walts" in a circus arena.

    Love

  • @twunk12 wow u got good hearing ive heard this song a bunch of times and i still cant tell

  • what a sound...

  • Why does Manze keep adding those pauses in his solo bits and then rushing the descending scale part? It just ruins the flow of it. Was it an intention change or just a lack of understand of the song? I know it's an improvisation that may be meant to add feeling to the song but it just doesn't work.

  • @twunk12 you're completely right. I was just thinking the same thing.

  • @twunk12 you're completely right. I was just thinking the same thing. Well, the baroque fashion calls for slowing the lower notes and such, but that's mainly for solo pieces. This is backed by an orchestra, so it sounds bad.

  • @twunk12 "Song"? Really? You can't be taken seriously if you call it a song. It's a piece.

  • @M1993Michelle Who cares what it's called, as long as it sounds the same. Anyway, that comment was added over 7 months ago, so I really don't remember the time or circumstances that it was written in. Anyway, at least I didn't call it a tune or something even more ridiculous.

  • @M1993Michelle yo chillax no need to get ure knickers in a knot lets just sit back and enjoy the music

  • @twunk12 Yeah, but Podger does this too! Listen to 1:40!

  • always loved rachel podger

  • Comment removed

  • Manze's level is simply too low for playing recitals. Podger by contrast is a true star.

  • thumbs up if u are 121909 viewer

  • ES REALMENTE PRECIOSO EN SU SENCILLEZ!!!!!!!!!!

  • What is the name of this concert hall?

  • @god4938

That's the Royal Albert Hall in London.

  • I LOVE THIS SOO MUCH! i only wish i could play as good as them

  • I dont know why bach's music remind me a huge piece of yogurt cake

    very good playing

  • Awful of pitch playing. Utterly flat, why doesn't anybody tell them?

  • @MrGufidaun Um, they're playing at baroque pitch, about a semi-tone flatter than modern pitch (a=440)

  • Love the interpretation.

  • This isn't in D minor is it?

  • @Chipz1515 It's at baroque pitch.

  • @rororosie1987 Ah, I see.

  • @rororosie1987 The pitch is totally irrelevant as long as they are unable to play right intervalls IN TUNE owing to technical difficulties - or they were unable to tune their instruments. It's simply AWFUL! A little practicing of scales with a tape recorder could help ...

  • This performance has the good energy!

  • nor part one.. movement one!!

  • @the16Hobitt

I know it's movement one, I called it "part one" cos I usually have to split the clips cos they're over 10 mins. This concerto is the only one I've uploaded where I've not had to do any splitting. Sometimes there's about 6 parts to 3 movements so I call them by their parts to avoid confusion.

Phew! Uploading is a major drag! Whatever it takes to make the job easier!

  • @the16Hobitt

    first movement =]

  • ANDREW MANZE=GOD!!!!!!

  • Wow people commenting play instruments ? Now I don't feel alone .

  • i usually adore Baroque but this version is very peculiar to my ears..

  • @tametataphysika I don't really like this version at all either. it kills the baroque feel and the whole articulation of it. I played the accompaniiment for it 2 years ago (on double bass) and loved how everything just fit together. at 1:49 i dont like how the male violinist puts the extra pause in his solo section. it throws it off.

  • I love how they added alittle gypsy twist to it.

  • that man looks like a turtle

  • Ehhh... I really don't like how that male soloist plays...

  • Incrível performance!

  • Comment removed

  • What an idiotic comment.

  • OMG! I love this version! The baroque is so good!

  • The play this piece, I feel adrenaline throughout my body. A master piece composed for the violin.

  • tbh the guy is quite awfull.. god knows how he got to play solo at BBC Proms..

  • Do you know what? I think that Andrew Manze is THE most overrated barque violinist alive. I personally know people who play much better. Rachel should be playing first. But I think that Andrew must be a great businessman and that's why hes gotten so far.

  • @violatione Haha i know :L im not being cocky or anything, but i honestly would say i was better than him...

  • It's using a lower pitch for the A, probably A 415 instead of A 440.

  • It sounds like it is in a different key than most versions. Shouldn't it be in D minor?

  • i noticed their using Baroque instruments. Is there any difference in sound between those and modern instruments?

  • no, just the pitch... you can tune them yourself to it,.. no difference in the actual instrument. i think they play there A to 412Hz instead of 443.5 Hz

  • Rachel Podger is so cute! And they're both great violinists. I am playing this piece now and I "am" Rachel.

  • v---As well as it is like expressing yourself.

  • We are not weird. We move around to the beat. It keeps in time as well as it is fun. In my own opinion anyway. Why wouldn't you want to move around when playing a fun piece??

  • so true. thats what makes us so amazing :)

  • @Fangneko Us musicians preform music, not dance. If you concentrate more on the music you can do so much more for the audience.

  • gaah string players are so weird! why must they move so much when they play?

  • when i see videos like this one (i do not want to say a single word against rachel podger's playing!) i ask that myself (i'm a violinist myself).

i almost don't like any aspect of manze's playing, i have to say! intonation, manner of playing, fingerings... aaah!! i do not understand how violinist that well-known can play a piece like this in such a bad way! it almost seems he hasn't touched his violin for some months... i'm perplexed!

  • do you not like manze's movements? maybe that's what you're ataken back by. I'm just saying. some people like movement while others don't!

  • it seems you're right.

i think neither no movement at all (like hilary hahn) nor a lot of movement is a good thing. i guess the best is medium: moving only a bit, just like it seems natural.

  • @viola989

I'm baffled why you would like Rachel Podger's playing but not Manze's. Their style is very similar and they are extremely well matched here. The musical interaction is on a very high level and it's obvious they enjoy playing together. As for intonation, I don't hear any problem with his intonation. (I am also a violinist.)

  • Both violinists are great, although I'm not so sure about the audience who clapped between movements!

  • both and all of them great

  • what bwv is that?

  • It's BWV1043.

  • I don't like the fact that the last chord (note) has the 3rd very pronounced.. i rather have more of the root in there.

  • i think there's too much rubato.

There's nothing wrong doing some rubato, but overdoing doesnt sound that good.

  • I don´t think it´s in a different key, I guess it`s just a matter of 420 Hz pitch.

What is wrong with Manze? He seems an amateur compared to Podger.

  • ITS IN A DIFFERENT KEY!

  • no its still in d minor, they're just using baroque tuning which is flat compared to the modern 440 Hz tunning, they tuned to about a 415 Hz i think?

  • omfg like my interpretation of this song isn't like this. They are playing it to happy. makes me sick. The song should sound dark and powerful with strong staccato.

  • But if you play like that (dark and with staccato), this isn't Bach anymore. It has to be light, but with defined notes (without messy sound).

  • How do u know what bach is... He doesn't put anything down in his music cept notes. How would u know?

  • @neskoncnost Are you really making that comment on a serious basis? Look at the score. Obviously you do not play and it wouldn't then make sense to you. Sorry to offend but you have no idea what you are talking about.

  • @neskoncnost I agree. I'm not impressed with this version

  • @neskoncnost Just be careful using phrases like "It has to be" with regard to musical interpretation. We may be more familiar and therefore comfortable with certain styles of play, but there's no call to say "it isn't this or that" unless it's played to our liking. Many people love Biondi's Vivaldi, for instance, and many hate it, but you can't say he isn't playing Vivaldi.

  • there are many schools of thought as to how bach should be played, its usually to personal preference so theres not "wrong way" unless youre playing in a completely wrong style

  • but u hav to agree with me that notes that are flat sound darker.

  • hmm now that you said that, they do.

  • Horrible

  • urghhh

  • maravilloso..

  • I'm sorry to say this, but Manze's playing is pretty poor here. Messy sound, faulty intonation, wayward rhythm - so different from how he sounds on his studio recordings, that it's hard to believe it's the same performer. Podger outshines him by far.

  • I have to agree with michaelmartind, but the tempo is to fast..That could explain his messy sound and wayward rhythm.

    She plays wonderfully

  • How beautiful!

This is what Bach meant with his music....

    Have your OWN interpretation.

He said always: "so must es klingen erstems"

"it has to be sound like this at first"..

In other words: after that: make the music yourself... with your own interpretation.

  • WELL IS THIS A DIFFERENT ARRANGEMENT

  • exageratted*

  • lol, it's so perfectly in time (over egaggerated movement) that it looks fake.

  • nice.

  • perfectly orchestrated!!

  • 1.42

  • great.....I love this concert and the players are the best!!

  • I love this song, I'm currently working on it. :]

  • Do you have the sheet music for the harpsichord? :)

  • I'm sure you can find "sheet music for the harpsichord" created by some editor.

But a professional harpsichordist would not play from "sheet music for the harpsichord".

The harpsichord part is not written out.

The left hand plays the bass line and the right hand realizes an accompaniment from the composer's figured bass notation, a kind of shorthand for chords. The player varies the fullness of his accompaniment depending what's going on in the music.

  • You mean Andrew Manze? He is one of the most amazing baroque violinists there is.

  • This is soooo much slower than Hilary Hahn ! Honestly I think she plays Bach the best ! Listen to it it's just amazing, it's the purest thing ever.

And besides the guy doesn't respect the ryhm dureing his solos ...

  • But it's not using a baroque violin like those 2.

  • Hahn is fine, it you don't mind the Gypsy violin sound of metal strings and heavy vibrato.

  • the glassed violinist had a mistake at 1:01

  • Yeah i noticed that.

  • if it's the little delay you are talking about, I think its on purpose. I am not sure though..

  • I mean a mistake of the text, he played the wrong note(s).

  • i think he plays rubato for the turns and ornaments to sound... :>

  • i know

  • yea. i think it was a mistake and he made it again so it would like it was on purpose. which shows hes a superb violinst. and lol he moves really fun. but its beautifully played and has a sound thats old, not modern! it sounds historically acurate and great.

  • they should read more historical texts and listen to less rock music

  • AWESOME PIECE! VERY HELPFUL! THANKS.

  • another great post

  • To see people playing differently and breaking the rules taught in the conservatory for years can be embittering to some and sacrilegious to others... these reactions are normal.

i didn't understand this way of playing at first. But i always keep an open mind. :-)

  • These musicians are "Rebels" (pun) and i like them. Afterall it still is a question of taste.

  • I think that hoopsmaster's probably just jealous because he can't play as well as Rachel Podger or Andrew Manze. Let's see what he comes back with.

  • Comment removed

  • I don't see how hooper there sees these two as arrogant

  • I love this Concerto to

  • i first listend to this concerto since i was about 13, there was a taped recording my grandparents had of these two little girls about 6 and 8 playing this concerto and i'm 18 now and still in love with its charm

  • hoopsmaster 13, i'm sorry to sa, but you'll meet with the devil in hell with your devilish theories.

  • amazing

  • omg the bowing is so smooth that it has a gentle sound so amazing!

  • Their style is interesting! They really put their own personal touch into their playing. I enjoyed listening to it very much. :)

  • exactly. people who think if you are animated you are fake should really go talk to someone like yo yo ma.

  • and an fyi, the reason musicians get into the music is BECAUSE they are enjoying it. if don't love the piece and enjoy the piece ur playing, ur piece would have no life and u would not be into it at all.

  • there is nothing "bad" about rachel podger. she enjoys playing in a very baroque manner that is different from other great concertos. i'm a violinist myself, and i know how fun it is to play this piece, and how hard they are. so anyone who doesn't like rachel podger back off. andrew manze on the other hand, was not very good. he sounds much better on his recordings.

  • im having issues understanding why everyone is talking so bad about their style of performance. at a performance it is professional to smile, and many players do the exaggerated emotions. many do it to keep time. i play for the orchestra at lamont school of music at du, i had a professor from juliard and have played with pinchas zukerman himself. the fact you think these movments show bad playing proves you need to pay more attention to music above a third grade level.

  • btw, I am a musician, and what's up with that comment "If you were a musician you'd understand?" You think musicians have some sort of club with a bunch of secrets? Anyone who listens to classical music knows what it is to get into the music, otherwise we'd all be listening to pop.

All the musicians you named had they're styles, but Andrew Manze's style is to play badly on purpose? Does he think that performers at Bach's time sounded like that?

  • Fun is boring. They enjoy playing it, but I don't enjoy listening to it. And if enjoyment is all they're getting, then they're really not into the piece, they're just into themselves for thinking that they're so good and so likeable that we can just sit here and listen to their crappy playing but still be drawn to the performance because they are smiling at us. It's like they're performing for 90 year-olds!

  • More so than some Bach, this is a really joyful piece of music. Why shouldn't the musicians have fun -- and show it -- while playing such incredible music? I feel sorry for anybody who thinks "happy" is shallow. He'd probably be a major hater.

  • wow a bunch of haters...

come on guys - they're playing bach baroque style at bbc proms, where people are clapping after the first movement.

and if they ham it up a little bit so what - they are still fantastic musicians with a lot of integrity.

listen to their cd - academy of ancient music - one of my most favorite cds.

  • Solo part are not good

  • i love the trills they add to the arpegio parts

  • he looks so funny bobbing his head like that...he looks autistic lol

  • Wonderful playing - it really comes alive. Happy birthday Maestro Manze. (January 14) You probably thought I forgot.

  • This is perhaps my favorite Bach work of all time. And it's always been about sex to me. (I have a dirty mind, I guess.)

It's an interesting performance but I think a bit too theatrical. Too... "Annie Get Your Gun" I-can-do-anything-ish.
