  • Great job, are you using the TRS-18?

  • Very beautiful, inspiring video! I am in love with your plane, I have dreamed of flying a little jet just like that one! Well done Sir.

  • Absolutely awesome ! gave me an adrenalin rush .wow.

  • @Taildragger2411 Always good to hear. Thanks!

  • @flsmicrojet

    hi from french riviera

I"d like to know if your micojet is imported in Europe

Thanks and hope to meet some microjet one day

  • @randrianabel I'll have to refer you to the guys at BD-Micro Technologies if you would like to see about building or having a kit built for you. You can find them by searching FLS MICROJET or clicking a link on my webpage. Good Luck!

  • I used to fly years ago. My friend Ed had 2 BD-5's with the 21' Span Naca wings on them, one had a Subaru engine, the other a honda. Your wing is bigger than the normal 13' for a jet version, am I correct?

  • @Matsci101 My wing span is 17'. A smaller version was tested but never truly used on any of the jets you've seen in the past. The prop versions are typically 21'.

  • Whoa! This takes me back quite a bit! (Wanted one myself when I first saw them in the magazine all those years ago) Nice to see the ol' design from Mr. Bede is still sticking around. Even getting an update with new gear inside. Congrats on the test flight.

  • @Jimfoxyboy I'm very fortunate to have completed my Microjet but I couldn't have done it without the help from the guys at BD Micro. I did two airshows last year and I expect to do quite a bit more in 2012 so be sure to say hi if you get a chance to see me fly. Also be sure to check out my other three videos I've posted.

  • @flsmicrojet Abbotsford here in southeast BC (Canada) is having their 50th anniversary airshow in mid August 2012. Think you'll be there? Might be my only chance.

  • @Jimfoxyboy I would love to come to your airshow however I also fly the A-10 and I'll be deployed to Afghanistan throughout August. Hopefully you'll get another chance.

  • Amazing Project! Beautiful little jet! Looks like a champion performer!

  • 100% great job & plane... congratulation...

  • Amazing aircraft. Many compliments for your success! Just a question, what is the stall speed at sea level?

  • you built that in 5 years :O it takes me 5 years just to take a crap

  • cute :-)

  • congrats on your jet...nice landing

  • @qwereca Thanks. It was a "short field landing" with maximum braking. I stopped at 1000'.

  • Congratulations for your Success!!! I love the BD-5J it's my favorite Homebuilt. I would love to have the Keys to fly it, but i wouldn't know how to start the engine:)

  • @kingtuthankamen2000 Funny how you on keys and starting. The truth is that there is no key and since the engine has a FADEC it's just a push button start. That's a little over simplified but not far from the whole procedure.

  • Say, wheres the intake on that jet?

  • @BlackDragon4716 The intakes are on the sides just below my head. They are two large NACA style scoops that feed the engine compartment behind me. From there, the engine draws the air that it needs from the compartment. Also have two hidden intakes in the wheel well that allow extra air anytime the gear are down and the engine is demanding extra air.

  • @flsmicrojet Aha! I can see them at 0:11

  • Dear Santa, ....

  • @MrJoeVig Funny! For me it was more like "Please honey!"

  • majestic aircraft truly a great work in engineering design. :)

  • @netsight I wholeheartedly agree. Thanks for the comment!

  • @flsmicrojet love this design ,,,, i am thinking of placing the bede in my fav, historical aircraft ,,,,, the dc3...sr71.. nice company huh ,,

  • @flsmicrojet this is a rereply,,, this jet would be in my number one top list of alltime favs,, IF,,, it was a two place ,,,,, did 100mph better ,,, and on the same fuel consumtion,,,, what do you think ? oh , ,and maybe twin for safe/reliable

  • @heettreet I'm sorry for the delayed reply. I've been busy flying the A-10 at my new guard unit. Many people have commented on a two seat version and while it was explored back in the 70's, it's not a feasible option for the manufacturer. As for speed, it's plenty fast. It will cruise 160 KIAS but can go over 200 KIAS if fuel burn isn't a consideration. My tested top speed is 250 KIAS but the BD-5 version has been tested at higher speeds.

  • Wow - I just googled BD5 and found this incredible video. When I was a junior at Nova High School we were the lucky recipients of an original BD5 kit. It obviously never flew, but the experience we gained in building it was priceless. Mr. Flint was our instructor and must have really pulled some strings to get this past the school board budget! I was 16 and had just soloed a C150 at 16 years old, with dreams to someday fly "our" BD5....those were the days! Thanks for the memories...

  • @FlyBoy7X7 Stories like your that bring back great childhood memories are my favorite complements. I'll be taking my jet to airshows around the country so come see me if you get the chance. Also, check out the other videos I've uploaded or visit my FLSMICROJET website.

  • asome

  • @urantiruslan Thank you!

  • how fast and how slow can it fly

  • @cbsphotographytv It stalls (max weight) at 63 KIAS clean and about 74 KIAS dirty and the BD-5 design was tested to speeds over 350 KIAS. For my purposes, I tested my jet up to 250 IAS. I don't have a need to go faster and I want to extend the lifespan of the airframe as long as possible. At full power, level flight, and 6,000 MSL, I flew 200 IAS with about a 225 TAS. I didn't test the same value at 12,000 but I should still get 200 KIAS with a higher TAS.

  • Polished aluminium,is SPLENDID,extra care in cutting and reveting and you have awork of art,by the way i would like to buy and spend a year perfecting it;ALso would someone put a jet on that new two seat amphibious ICON A5. claude Laleau president of HaitiExo #95 rue gregoire petion-ville HAITI ht6140.

  • @laleau59 Thank you and I also like the polish aluminum look. I would like to keep it but I need to paint the jet as soon as I can for corrosion control.

  • I can't think of any other aircraft that is so small and so present, considering it was first designed in the 70's.

I saw one in early 80's in one of the Russian magazines: 'Техника Молодёжи' (don't ask me to translate it) totally fell in love with it. All thumbs UP, love the avionics, absolutely AWESOME little machine.

  • @Fokysnik2 When people see my jet, many have childhood memories of seeing it at airshows when they were children. I love how excited people are to see the jet after so many years.

  • Amazing, pure flying! :)

  • @qwasd0r Well said. I've flown quite a few aircraft but I've never had the "strap on a plane" feeling as much as with the FLS Microjet. I literally feel like I'm just sitting in the sky with total control.

  • ...Magnificent accomplishment!!! Is it a Rutan design? Beautiful landing as well. Were those the ailerons doubling as flaps or? thanx and cheers

  • @popsaka1 Thank you. It's more traditionally known as a Jim Bede design but Burt Rutan played a major and defining role in the design of the BD-5. Thank you also for the landing complement. It's a funny site picture on the first few landings but with the proper airspeed and attitude, the jet settles nicely. The flaps are simply plain flaps with no roll input. If you look at my most recent video (belly cam) you can see the flap and aileron movement.

  • @flsmicrojet There is a youtube video of Burt Rutan (Jan 2010) explaining his role at Bede (Newton, KS) in the 1970's. I think its "Burt Rutan 6 of 8 Bede Aircraft". He says he helped design the "Truck-A-Plane", not the actual plane. I personally flew the Truck-A-Plane (Corky Fornoff checking me out while driving the truck), then the BD-5B and the BD-5J, w/ Corky on the wing in a P-51 -- all at Newton, KS, 1976 I think. Sold my BD-5B in 1979 in El Paso.

  • I just posted a new video on my youtube page. I did a little experimenting with a new camera attached to the belly of the plane. Click on my profile to see it.

  • @flsmicrojet Well done...you must have had a huge grin on your face after that first flight after the time & effort in the build. Great job and tks for sharing your project with us. Cheers Gary (Australia).

  • @53glowe Thank you for the complement and your right about the huge grin but I only had that after the first flight was complete. It was all business in the air and on the ground during testing.

  • if you guys ever need any graphic designs ideas drop me a line....really nice video

  • @unit666industries Thanks for the nice comment and I appreciate the offer. Right now, I'm just working towards getting a nice paint job. I'm very busy with A-10 school right now but once I'm done, I hope to pursue a sponsor that may require a nice graphic design.

  • @flsmicrojet cool, im in process of expanding to a bigger place for powdercoating / graphics

  • @goosedizzel I'm not in the business of selling aircraft and I'm not selling my jet so please understand that no matter how rude you are, I'm under no obligation to disclose my financial information to you? I apologize for your frustration however, I've made plenty of references that direct you to the information you need. Please enjoy the video I've made and understand that I'm simply a homebuilder, military pilot, and hopefully a future airshow performer. Please be respectful.

  • nice plane bad music

  • awsome plane!

  • @assman12354 Thanks!

  • Top speed, cruise speed, stall speed, climb rate, roll rate, max altitude, take off distance, landing distance, mpg.... total cost to build, cost to maintain....

  • @cobrachoppergirl If you take a look at my website, you'll find most of the answers to your questions. I've only tested the airframe up to 265 KIAS and established a Vne of 250 KIAS. The original BD-5J has flown much faster but my intention is to minimize aircraft fatigue. As for altitude, I flew up to 12,500 feet and still had a 1,400 FPM climb but it was cold and my toes were numb. I'll try again with O2 sometime in the future. The cost to maintain is quite low so far.

  • How much does it cost to build?

  • @cobrachoppergirl The short answer is a lot. The jet may not look it but it's quite complicated under the hood and with so few ever built, quite a bit of the cost is research and development. For the best answer to your question, you'll have to ask the guys at BD-Micro Technologies but be a little patient. Their a very small outfit that is currently preparing to take orders for a limited production of FLS Microjet kits.

  • @flsmicrojet actually, the short answer would have been an actual price. Just saying. Nice jet.

  • @pantsarehard Or you could contact BD micro in San Diego and obtain the pricing since they sell and build

  • Don't know who put the body together but the body under the back wing has more dents and deformity than one could imagine.

I grew up in an Auto Body Shop and that is what this guy needs a Body & fender man...

  • @sixtiesforever1966 Your looking at the jet during the testing phase and essentially commenting on an unfinished/unpainted product. I've worked very hard to make the jet look nice but some issues regarding shape can't be completely fixed during construction. Auto-body shops usually don't have to account for the pressure differentials created by the jet engine, extreme and quick temperature changes to the airframe, and bending that naturally occurs during high "g" maneuvering.

  • @flsmicrojet Thank you for your reply.

Now I understand. I have painted a few planes and used to work for a Government Contractor and Used to Finish and Paint Rocket Launcher's that went under the wing of jet's, aluminum was heavier gauge than on your plane... Four Stage Paint for Aluminum.

  • Great Music! What is it? Any answers?

The Plane is a BD-5J. Funny James Bonds Austin Martin was a DB-5

    Sir David

  • I am watching the perceived low speed stability of your jet. I say perceived as we can't tell wind or weather conditins, but wow, handiling looks like a breeze, or is it just the skills of the pilot. I am totally in awe. Fabulous vid.

  • FLSMicrojet, awesome movie. I agree with MinningAround about the music, but in a more respectful way. I would much rather prefer the sound of the turbine.

Is it the microturbo TRS-18 turbine? Is there any of these turbines for sale today?

    Fantastic cockpit.

You did an awesome job. Congratulations.

  • great work :D

  • Fancy telling someone you own a real jet Haha you'd not be lying!

  • Now that IS cool

  • Can't hear the engine with that music playing. Is the video about the jet or about the music? FAIL.

  • @MinningAround I'm sorry you didn't enjoy the video. Perhaps I'll have something you might like soon.

  • Are you guys selling this kits??... it would be nice in the future a two seats bd xD

  • This is a really awesome plane! Going to get this by all means necessary!

  • Thanks for your reply again! N9501359, I´d also enjoy seeing them. There is not a lot BD-5 stuff on the internet.

Another question, is the BD-5 small enough to transport it on a trailer?

    Thanks!

  • @cy2kill I transport my FLS Microjet on a trailer quite often. It takes me about 20 minutes to pump out remaining fuel, remove the wings, stabilator, and load the plane into my trailer. Including the pitot tube, my jet is 14' x 4'.

  • I had a BD-5 prop version and flew the plane for the 1st time in 1992. This brought back memories when you were taxing out to the run way. i was so nervous and very excited about the roll out and the landing. You did a fantastic job on the roll out - very nice front wheel clime out etc. The landing was really neat as well.. Thanks for the video.. Be Safe in the plane... God Bless.. Chris Anderson

  • @N9501359 I'm glad you enjoyed the video and I'm currently working on another. I just received my BD-5J "type" rating a few days ago so now I'm starting to work on my airshow. If you have video or pictures of your BD-5, I'd really enjoy seeing them. Thanks!

  • Very nice! I love this little Jet! When I´m older i hope to get one ;). How much did you pay for it? And how was the built?

  • @cy2kill, Thanks for the complement! I spent over five years and quite a bit of money to get my jet airborne. The biggest factor that made my project successful was working directly with the guys at BD Micro Technologies. We worked together to safely develop a high quality Microjet under their professional supervision. Now that my jet has completed flight testing, I believe BD Micro will be releasing information about their FLS Microjet kit any day now.

  • @flsmicrojet Hi, thanks for your reply. I just asked BD-Micro. They say a BD-5B Kit would cost aboud 26k$, without engine. But piston engines aren´t that expensive. I am doing my flight license soon. After that I´d love to build one. Problem is I am from germany, so the BD-Micro guys can´t help me. But next year I am starting an apprenticeship as a Flight Engineer at Airbus Industries. Do you think after that i got the skills for the little beast? ;)

    Thanks!

  • @cy2kill All the BD kits are possible to build using the BD-Micro processes but it's important to understand that this plane is not like building an RV or other similar kit aircraft. Many older kits have traded hands countless times to potential homebuilders only to quickly realize that this plane requires help. BD-Micro will be transitioning to a builder assistance program that in my opinion is the only way to safely build this plane.
