Barry's manager lost that fight for him....we all know that fair skinned people have to be a bit carefull of sunny conditions....Barry is extremely fair skinned, and to make him go fifteen rounds in hot weather like that, showed unbelievable bad judgement.
actually ,and I have it on good authority (Gordon Ferris who was another british/irish boxing champ and buddy of Barrys) that Barry was very sick before and after that fight due to heat exhaustion and de -hydration...Gordon is a customer of mine
@RickstaRIIx Dont contradict yourself my friend, make up your mind, did Cruz win fair and square or did the heat beat Barry and Cruz deserves no credit or respect for his hard erarned win? Nice excuse, nobody likes extreme hot weather even if you are born in a hot town, heat will punish everyone not just McGuigan.
@cainey66 the only thing the heat did is let Barry get a hot ass whooping! That's it!!!!Stevie fought in the same heat so the heat played no part, just something to make excuses for!
McGuigan should never have taken this fight on. Probably the purse on offer was more dazzling than the sun in the sky. To win in the States, you have to beat the opponent and the homey referees and that means putting the other guy to sleep, on his ass, for the full count.
McGuigan beat an old shopworn Eusebio Pedroza who would've beaten him if they had met two years earlier. Steve Cruz was nothing remarkable but he clearly had the right style to beat McGuigan. All Irishmen should quit crying and accept that Barry was nothing exceptional just lucky.
@1966tinman, while I agree that some have grossly overrated McGuigan's abilities, I think you may be slightly harsh on him. It's easy to say that Pedroza was shopworn and over the hill after the event - the fact is, he was still the champion, was the big betting favourite and actually performed very well in that fight - McGuigan simply outworked him. McGuigan was no all-time great and I wouldn't have fancied his chances against Nelson, but suggesting he was all down to luck is a little unfair.
GONZZ100 doesent know what he is spittin about...had to follow his contract, was not up to barry who or where he fought, same as nowadays, uneless your a big american fighter you cant dictate where the fight should be held...or who you fight.....mangers are influenced by dollar signs....end of story..nelson was the only threat to barry on an even platform..
granted- mcguigan should have looked into things more and as we all know his people (barney eastwood) weren't watching his back. there are well founded allegations that mcguigans promoter placed at £10000 bet on cruz and mcguigan unsuccesfully sued his promoter over this fight. if im honest i think mcguigan would have one the fight had it been in a more 'suitabe' climate. i think we can all acknowledge that the heat favoured the texan better than it favoured the clones man!
Barry was exhausted, a feather could of knocked him over, i remember Richard Steele saying at the time even his eye balls were dry, he was that dehydrated. even Thomas Hearns refused to box at the time, Barry went into the ring, a pale skinned Irishman in the desert against a Mexican! a no brainer really.
I've heard that excuse before from Englishmen, Scots, and now the Irish. Whether it's boxing, football, whatever, they always use that same weak excuse when the sun's out. Like it wasn't hot for Cruz, eh? Barry threw lots of good combos in the 14th and won the round but took a straight right to the jaw w/7 secs to go and that one hurt him. Still, he ran out from his corner at the start of the 15th. He was in great shape--both were--but Cruz was the better man this day.
you know shit, i used to box so when training for fights running was twice as hard in hot weather, fighting is the same. He was very very tired, FACT. Its Americans who complain losing to Brits, Hopkins & Taylor beaten by Calzaghe/Froch they say it was fix a set up etc, never give credit. I read on Youtube that Roy Jones jnr took a dive against Danny Green or that he was to old, excuse"s. Same when Calzaghe beat Lacy "oh he was shit anyway" bad losers. Calzaghe was 36 to Roys 39 as well, lol
I boxed and wrestled for 4 years during my high school years. And guess what? Running in hot weather was tough for me too. And I'm Mexican! Well, Mexican-American (SoCal'er). It's difficult for EVERYONE, smart guy. Yes, Barry was tired in the 15th. And so was Cruz. They had just fought 14 rounds in hot weather. Both guys were way fuckin' tired. But Cruz won out because he was the better man that day.
I'm not sure why u brought up Calzaghe, Froch, et al. I never mentioned them. Later, genius.
It proves the weather had a bigger impact on Barry, after all he smashed Bernard Taylor to pieces who was undeafeted at the time in 34 fights & is considered one of USA"s greatest Amatuers so he had great pedigree, Cruz would"ve been smashed in Belfast. Also regarding Calzaghe/Froch etc i was countering your excuse arguement, when in fact it is always the Yanks he make excuses! they are bad losers.Top trainer Dan Birmingham said the best performance he"d ever seen the night Joe beat up Lacy.
We'll never know what would've happened had Barry fought Cruz in Belfast. They fought over here and Cruz won it going away, though McGuigan fought his ass off like he always did. I saw Barry's fight w/Erik Morales and he took a frightful beating but kept coming. Tough guy, honorable warrior, that's Barry.
Re: Calzaghe/Froch/Birmingham, I wasn't the one making excuses, you were.
P.S. Barry's win over Pedroza is one of my favorite fights. I disliked Pedroza so I was rooting hard for Barry.
think your getting barry confused with another irishman mate- wayne mccullough fought morales. great fight though- ring magazine fight of the year 1986
@Kedbuka Got to aggree with you there McGuigan came running out of his corner in the 15th who the hell could do that these days? Most boxers are f***ed coming out for the 11th nowadays.
it's quite common that fighters needing a KO will make a desperate charge in the final round, particularly in circumstances were their world title is slipping away. i don't think that his initial early dash in the 15th adds credence to the arguement that 'the heat effected both fighters evenly' but i respect your opinion and were your coming from
it don't matter where you fight everybody feels the same heat . when you get your ass kicked . you get your ass kicked. end of story. no excuses. if barry couldn't take the heat he shouldn't have agreed to the fight.

Its a tough world in the fighting game
Barry was beaten in this fight fair and square
But i have no doubt had the fight taken place in Ireland or england Barry would of stopped him.
Barry McGuigan was a very talented world class boxer who as lived the dream, and with that comes respect

Common, whiners,
McGuigan was the typical home advantage fighter.
He came out to the States and Cruz kicked his ass.
End of story.
And to think that some morons back then would have the gall to suggest that Barry would have beaten the great Salvador Sanchez.
Sanchez would have kicked and retire his ass.
