Usuwając Żydów, pozbywasz się jednocześnie znakomitych przedstawicieli kultury polskiej. Owszem, większość ludzi wyznania mojżeszowego się nie asymilowała, ale obie kultury żyły obok siebie w względnej zgodzie. II Rzeczpospolita była fascynującym tyglem narodów ;)

The loss of 3 million Jews in WW2 was Poland's loss, not its benefit. Jews lived in the country and brought great things to its society. It doesn't detract from the fact that Poland's society , with it's fanatical Catholicism, was and is a centre of anti-semites. Speaking to any old Jewish survivors, this will be backed up.

Whether Polish people of today like to here it or not, that is history.

@gurufabbes What I wanna say is you couldn't discuss things like that openly in Paris like you can do it in Warsaw, in the media, (radio, TV, papers the internet) Poles do it, they discuss hard things like Jedwabne, some like it some not, but try to refresh oridinary French memory by saying that Vichy was an OFFICIAL authority colaborating with the Nazis and in a way responsible for the Shoah, you'll see what I mean ;-)

That's not what I meant by similar criticism, and nowhere did I claim (I don't know) whether people talk about anti-Semitism in Poland.

What I said was, it exists and existed. Even if not always on the official institutional level, definitely among civil society and among individuals. While many Poles hid Jews, at great risk to their own lives, many also turned Jews in, or even killed them themselves. Keep in mind the wave of anti-Semtic murders AFTER the war that is forgotten.

Polish biggest daily paper is run by a Jew also the biggest commertial TV seems to have Jews involved in. ;-)

For the record, I think the French under Chirac apologized for crimes under Vichy. I don't think anyone outside of the far right denies the collaboration that went on in Vichy France in rounding up Jews.

The criticism aimed at Poland is different. It's towards a general Polish anti-Semitism that existed and led to all sorts of horrible things. It's not towards any particular policy or Polish government.

Krakow misses Jews!

My granny told me wonderfull stories from her childhood, she grew up in Kazimierz.

It's a part of the city with overwhelming sense of void.

All those sinagogues, cementeries, inscriptions, street names...

And most important: memories.

It is a part of our history and for us - Poles history is sacred.

@gurufabbes Poland has their own thousand year old history, but there are polish jews indeed, also many many poles risked their lives and their families to save jews in ww2 from being killed and they risked being killed themselves. it pains me very much that sometimes i see israelites saying bad about Poland, becuase my coubtry has been a sanctuary for them in the harest times, and my people suffered not smaller losses in numbers, but still the whole world only looks at israel and what they say

You're right. It's wrong to say that Poles were bad and ignore the many contributions and life-risking attempts to save Jews in Poland. Indeed, Israel recognizes thousands of Poles as 'Righteous among the Nations' who did the right thing. However, Anti-Semitism did and still DOES exist in Poland. Many Jews surviving the camps came back to their homes in villages in Poland and were murdered by anti-semitic poles. Some Jews fighting in the Warsaw uprising were betrayed and killed.

It's complicated and I hope that things remain the way they are now, with Poland activiely trying to work on its past and reviving the large and important Jewish history that it has. The country were around 10-25% of the population was Jewish.
