  • you allways the best ,compositor and rocker,.. off all times.

  • i love this song i remenber firt time allmost abauth18 year agoo , great year off good music.

  • if james jamerson's index finger was named "the hook", i think sting's thumb should be named "the claw"

  • When I heard this song 1st time in Grammy Award 1992 I could not forget.Today I am able to searh to find my Favourites so I found it and I am very glad and grateful to YouTube team on their behalf it could possible.Thankyou

  • @TheStaniol ?? Andy?? It's a song by Sting with Dominic Miller on guitars , nothing with Andy lol

  • Brand New Day is his best Album

  • I was just listening to AC/DC Hell's Bells and then remembered and had to search for this track. Anyone else find them similar?

  • that's Paola Paparelle on oboe,

Kathryn Tickell plays Northumbrian pipes (a type of bagpipes) on another track of this album

  • that's Paola Paparelle on oboe,

Kathryn Tickell plays Northumbrian pipes (a type of bagpipes) on another track of this album

  • In britain in 2011 this should be called the dole cages,if you lose the wager with the king of the sea, you'll spend the rest of your life on the dole with me....these are the dole cages..etc.

  • Good song, but a bit too soft rockish.Although if it was all rock it would be a crap song.So i guess Sting is trying to write a rock song with songwriter credibility.Win not fail to my ears.

  • is that a Bassoon sighting? nice!

  • @fischdog7, actually no, I think that's an oboe. I used to be in orchestra long ago, in high school.

  • this sounds deceptively straightforward but it's not.

  • this version is awesome, but everything Sting does is awesome, i think. the lyrics always make u think & use those brain cells God gave u

  • this song beat enter sandman in 91? what a crap

  • This song is sooooooo artistically done........I love this piece.

  • Named my first gold claim after this song back in Sept 91. Only I spelled it wrong when I filed it at the time and in the records its spelled the soul cadges for the rest of time.

    crom2000

  • Remember working out and playing along with Dominic Miller's ace guitar parts on my then Squire Stratocaster off my eldest brother's then cassette (just picked a guitar up and played along with it again while listening...amazed I could remember the parts!) lol...LOVE this track, had ALWAYS been a BIG Sting (and before that for years, Police fan) but Dominic's guitar playing and killer tone are a BIG part of it for me,obviously! ;-))

  • There are 5 lost souls out there.... May Sting rescue them.

  • Kathryn Tickell looks like a child in this video. Greatest album ever.

  • these lyrics blow my mind, Sting is such a f'ing songwriting genius..

  • A truly great song. The last few lines, repeating the lines from 'Island Of Souls', always get to me.

  • Soul Cages is a masterpiece and an album that is best appreciated if you are in emotional turmoil. Dominic Miller's guitar tone is killer and this album would not be what it is without his tasteful playing. My two cents..

  • @blackstratmojo so well said!!!

  • @blackstratmojo

I could not agree more. Miller is amazing... So criminally underrated.

  • @hyperboogie

Sting knows who to play with. And thousands of top-level guitarrist would kill to play with him. If he chose this guy is because this was what he was looking for

  • @hyperboogie i like dominic so much while hearing this song, i wikipedia'd him. His bday is mar 20 1963....(he is younger than i am, darn it). no wonder i love him so much & want to hear more from him & Sting

  • @blackstratmojo I agree with you 110%

  • @blackstratmojo

Dream of Blue Turtles, Soul Cages, and Tale of Ten Summoner's Tales are his best, in my opinion. We have highs and lows. These are his highs.

  • @carnalusband I agree, all three better than Nothing Like The Sun in my opinion.

  • @blackstratmojo Emotional turmoil; I like that! So few have even heard this album. And it is an "album" in the traditional sense. You must listen to the whole opus. It really is his best, yet strangely remains obscure and under-appreciated. Saw the tour. As with 'the best', Live was even better. Miller's guitar - as you succinctly stated - was "killer" and is the real force supporting this work

  • certainly one of his best tunes.

  • How can you do without of this ?

  • Never knew this video existed!

  • this is my favorite song since '91..

    i was 11 years old.

..i'm still loving this magical sound..

  • @khabriel this is my favourite sting solo song, amen to that , khabriel

  • @khabriel grown up listening to his music myself... although i was born in '92 :) haha, love- love- love- Sting and all his music.

  • Sting said that The Soul Cages album was his way of working through the grief and complexities of his own father-son relationship after the death of his father. Erik Clapton said that he kept Soul Cages on his "turntable" non-stop for the first 6 months following the tragic loss of his son, Connor. It is a really cohesive record. Fierce, but also very tender, and even humorous. Archetypal in scope. A soul-gift to anyone who cares to listen, IMHO ;-)

  • Any one else see a parallel with Mage: The Awakening? :P

  • i agree, this album is bar none the best hands down.

  • sting the most talented and versitile musician of all time.very few genres he hasen't and cant do

  • I've been trying to analyze the lyrics. What do any of you suppose is the hidden message?

  • This concept album is simply perfect.

    The lyrics are wonderful too...

  • This beat Enter Sandman as the best rock song at the Grammy awards in 1992. A bit like Dances With Wolves beating Goodfellas at the Oscars.

  • Dominic Miller is AWESOME!! on guitar

  • dont know y everyone else cant post at this hi volume....thanks....

  • nice oboe solo, wasn't expecting that..

  • @dragonfrog23 how exactly?

  • awesome song

  • perfect song

  • Wish I'd heard it live on the SC tour, however, in 2007 - live,it was stunning!

  • This was the version that I was looking for and "You Tube" did not disappoint. God. What a lovely song, a great lot philosophical too. "We are the Soul Cages".

  • Thanks alot for putting this up ive never sen it before! *****

  • YEAHH

  • fantastic STING.....one of the best of the story!!!!!!!!

  • What a fantastic Sting album this is.

  • "And he dreamed of the ship on the sea

It would carry his father and he

To a place they could never be found

To a place far away from this town

    A Newcastle ship without coals

They would sail to the island of souls"

    Beautifully powerful song!!~k*L

  • for me Vinie could be a legend, manu is ....just really good.

  • And is it just me or does he look uncannily like Ray Davies (Kinks) here...?!

  • Sting is amazingly sexy and has a beautiful voice!! I love his songwriting...he's different from many other musicians....

  • LJR8792...Nothing Like The Sun...

  • I didn't like this song at first, but that's probably because I was listening to it through Youtube.

When I downloaded it, it sounded amazing, I guess you just have to listen to some songs properly.

  • this alludes to hades.....i hope

  • Manu recorded the album... But Vinnie Colaiuta is the drummer in the video and on the Soul Cages Tour in '91... I prefer Manu...

  • I love Vinnie and Manu both :)

  • i caught him on this tour in miami... amazing show....

  • My Autumn season album....nothing quite like it!

This is the one song on the album that is, in essence, a venting of frustration, as it were, but perfectly done so. The conversation between the younger "child" and the fisherman NAILS it. " Why should I whistle when the caged bird sings??"

    ........incredible.

  • Who is the woman at 2:00 on the sax (?)? Doesn't look like Kathryn Tickell.

  • Her name is Paola Paparelle, and it's actually an Oboe she's playing. Her performance throughtout the entire album add the perfect touch to the character of the collection of songs Sting put together.

  • Thanks for that detail, it's good to see musicians getting credit for their work.

  • It's an oboe, no sax.

  • Oh, sorry, didn't see someone before did the correction and even know her name...

  • How could you even think that is a saxophone? Go back to school.

  • This song still sends chills through me...it tells such a good story and sort of blends elements of Sting's personal life with mystic legend. I saw him in Cincinnati during his tour for this album for the bargain price of $25...

  • Comment removed

  • 4.16 onwards...just amazing

  • @welshhibby

Then you will like the first song on "The Soul Cages" album which is "Island of Souls". He includes part of the lyrics from that song into this one.

  • bloody awsome -I have so many in my favorites -but when i cean em ou -this one will be on top of my list !-thank you for this one -god it is good !-have a nice day all !-gus

  • I've always loved the "Island of Souls" reprise. Brilliant.

  • THIS IS MY FAVORITE STING SONG EVER my FAVORITE CD of his man I NEVER knew he had a video well done you made my DAY!!!! my YEAR!

  • k buenos recuerdos cuando salia de 4o medio

  • Actually, the sound is pretty excellent! Good job man! I really enjoyed it!

  • I saw The Soul Cages show, when the CD was 1st released, Sting performed 2 shows in N.Y & 2 in Los Angeles. The show blew my mind, I still get chills hearing this song.

  • Great song!

  • And what's in it for me, my pretty young thing?

Why should I whistle when the caged bird sings?

If you lose a wager with the king of the sea

You'll spend the rest of forever in the cage with me

    love this line

  • the greatest sting record!

  • Please saga55 send me a URL of this video. I can´t watch in my country.

  • Thank you so much saga55!!!!!!! I have been wanting to see this video since 1991 and I saw it full length today for the first time thanks to you!!!!!!! I got to speak to Stings Sax Player's (Branford Marsalis) secretary at The Tonight Show in 1994, where I learned Sting was wearing a Gianni Versace Buffalo Bill silk shirt on the single album cover for "If I Ever Lose My Faith in You"....

  • Sports Palace, sorry, in Mexico City...

  • i want to thank to a guy that help me on the soul Cages Tour in '91. In the Sport Palaces of Mexico....

I almost meet at Sting in person, at the backstage...

    But this is another story....

  • Sting and Dominic Miller are SMOKING HOT and give 105% at every concert. They are just as good live as the studio version. WOW!

  • Here are my favorite 10 form Sting: 1. Why should I cry for you 2. Soul Cages 3. It is probably me (both versions) 4. King of pain 5. Be Still My Beating Hear 6. They Dance Alone (Gueca Solo) 7. Fragile 8. Tomorrow Well See 9. Russian 10. Shape of my heart Can you share your favorites?
  • @chengboyin

technically, King of Pain is a song by The Police. It's still an amazing song tho.

  • You could disagree but this is my rating of his albums: 5 Stars: Synchronicity (Live) ('83) 4 Stars: The Dream of the Blue Turtles ('85) 5 Stars: Nothing Like the Sun ('87) 5 Stars: The Soul Cages ('91) 4 Stars: Ten Summoner's Tales ('93) 5 Stars: Demolition Man (Mixed) ('93) 3.5 Stars: Mercury Falling ('96) 3 Stars: Brand New Day ('99) 2 Stars: Sacred Love ('03) Not rated: Songs from the Labyrinth ('06)
  • This album has really grown on me over the years. Not everyone could accept it after his previous solo albums but it was developed following the natural death of both his Parents. I think it's a very personal soul searching musical journey for him.

  • i agree this is a song from 1 of his best albums. i like every track on it.

  • This album is the man's best. I say that as a life long fan of both The Police and Sting on his own. It's an extraordinary artistic piece of music.

  • Amen :-)

  • @dkempf1 I like the mood of the album

  • video insomma... musica ok... parole super, stupende, e chi più ne ha più ne metta ... in particolari momenti della mia vita di grandissimo sostegno. Loredana

  • ciao

  • Great Song, Viva Sting!

  • Fucking great song, from a great album.

It still kicks ass 17 years on.

  • Is that Kathyrn Tickell at 2:00?? She plays the Northumbrian pipes but this looks more like a clarinet or sax. Is that Kathyrn though??

  • no, she plays Oboe

  • Sounds as fresh and meaningful today as it did back in 1991. But IMHO, there is very little going on in contemporary rock, pop, or whatever you call it today that is decent anyway.

  • Well I play this album over and over because he is a true rocker on this one. It also hasMad About You on it and that makes me cry. Only Sting!!!!!! I hope that he never retires but I know he will one of these days. World will never be the same.

  • nuestras almas estan en la prensa de una fabrica de chapas de coche, en un polígono sucio por el que todos dejamos huella pero que no es de nadie.

  • una canzone unica, incredibile....rock e poesia allo stato puro...

  • It's almost impossible for me to keep commentary about this album to the minimum. This is my ultimate October music and has been ever since it's release. While I can't say the Soul Cages was his best album, it ABSOLUTELY is incredibly VIVID. The lyrics and theme behind the entire album is simply haunting. As Sting was in the middle of producing this album when his father passed away, that experience is conveyed eloquently in each song...Simply amazing.

  • If you know the album, the bridge at the end has more meaning. One of the best bridges I've heard. Then again I'm a sucker for things father/son.

  • Thank u man, now i know i'm not alone in this world. I love that damn bridge!

  • i knowed this song to day,in car of my friend,a i ran at home 4 listening this great song !!

  • exelente tema de sting , y exelente gitarra del argentino dominic miller

  • Come on . The Dream of the Blue Turtles was the most innovative. But I agree The Soul Cages is my favorite.

  • This is such a brilliant song!!! I think The Soul Cages (album) is one of the most underrated albums ever. Every track from begining to end to amazing.

  • i completely agree...the album is wonderful...each time I listen to it...i appreciate even more...brilliant..!!

  • I agree... "the soul cages" is the best solo album of sting in his career...

  • Saw Sting do this on his Broken Music tour in 2005-06....and it was fantastic! There's just something about this song that really gets to me...

  • Manu Katche on drums great song.

  • I love Sting and the Police!

  • This was the first cd I ever had in High School. Put's a chill up my spine......

    I cannot believe it's been 17 years.

    Time Flies.

  • well.. i was back in high school too. and i cant fricking believe its 17 years later either .. he got a grammy for this.. and a richly deserved one.

    time flies.. indeed.

  • I would LOVE to see Sting and Keith Urban do this song live... After seeing how great Keith and Alicia Keyes did Gimme Shelter at Live Earth, you can only imagine Sting and Urban together on a rockin' tune like this...

  • hey you never know... I'd like to see Sting do this song with a hard rock band to give it a stronger edge

  • The Soul Cages is the best STING album, the most innovative. For me,Soul Cages is a cult album.

  • well said

  • Soul cages = a very emotional STING!! One of his best albums (1991) - like it soo much!

  • Friends, It was an unreal experience to see Sting & his band perform the whole Soul Cages CD @ The Wiltern Theatre in Los Angeles Calif. just after it was released. I agree with the "gregorian corals" comment, The only way I can describe the way it sounded Live to me, the music & vocals had a scary/ other worldly sound. I honestly feel Soul Cages is up there among Sting's best work.

  • Very emotional, I feel totaly emphatic when I hear Soul Cages, what a onderful piece of music, sounds like gregorian chorals, takes you out of this reality...

  • sting has to be one of the biggest egomaniac rock has ever seen............I guess cool for girls to look..........puff

  • I love the bit where it changes key and the lyric is "and I dreamed of a place on the sea...".

  • I was happy to hear this song, though i always confuse this song's title with "The Island of Souls" but I'm glad the theme carried through

  • Ten Summoner's Tales has rather more than 2 good tracks on it. :)

  • I so agree with you, and so did his other albums have more than 2 good tracks.

  • 12 good songs... indeed

  • This is simply brilliant !!!

  • Brigitte Sanchez I like this video, it is my favorite

  • This entire album is brilliant. Amazing lyrics, amazing emotion, amazing song.

  • my fav sting album, very emotive and atmospheric album.

  • ehh isde idare eder

  • Absolutely brilliant, Sting at his best!

  • GRANDE STING

  • Master of the bridge and this song is the proof. Perfection!

  • Well, he's from Newcastle - he was probably inspired by the Tyne bridge.

  • Gran vídeo. Gran canción . Gran Sting.. mellor The police, pero gran Sting. Moi bo.

  • Fantastic song!

  • Well if you ask me who make the best music:

Al Di meola,John Mclaughlin,Paco de Lucia,Steve Vai or Sting

    Well Sting wins it clearly

you don't have to be a virtuoso to make good music

When you're less skilled than other virtuoso you rely on good lyrics, good harmony and good melody

    Dominic Miller Rules Sting Rules

  • ... I can see you aren't into music.

  • Dominic Miller is a good guitar player but a bit overrated if you compare him w/ the masters: Al Dimeola, John McLaughlin, Paco de Lucia, Steve Vai, etc.

  • fuckin brilliant. love this song

  • I didn´t know that there was a video of this song, but I

have to say that this one of Sting´s best songs from his

    best albums. Golden Sting!

  • Bad. Ass. Thanks for this! This is my second favorite Sting band. I liked him best with dominic miller and Josh Freese on drums for Live 8--that was thee shit.

  • Simply one of the Master's best....LOVED hearing this live in the Broken Music tour!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • dominic is the best company to sting, please sting, return with this amazing taste guitarman....

  • Um, I think I need to wipe my seat off! Sting is too sexy!

  • This is serious best roch song..thank u Sting..."Why should I whisper when Caged Bird sings"..This is heavy stuff..

  • I think The Soul Cages album is Stings best solo effort to date.

  • One of the best albums ever:eloquent and evocative. One of the best singles ever: 'all this time'

  • Agreed. My favorite album.

  • Its not Kathryn Tickell in this video. The oboe player is Kate St John I think.

  • I Love Dominic Miller.

  • love him too ;-)

  • Thank you. Sting rules forever.

  • love the song, could live without the video

  • yeah! absolutely Jaya!
