In britain in 2011 this should be called the dole cages,if you lose the wager with the king of the sea, you'll spend the rest of your life on the dole with me....these are the dole cages..etc.
Good song, but a bit too soft rockish.Although if it was all rock it would be a crap song.So i guess Sting is trying to write a rock song with songwriter credibility.Win not fail to my ears.
Named my first gold claim after this song back in Sept 91. Only I spelled it wrong when I filed it at the time and in the records its spelled the soul cadges for the rest of time.
Remember working out and playing along with Dominic Miller's ace guitar parts on my then Squire Stratocaster off my eldest brother's then cassette (just picked a guitar up and played along with it again while listening...amazed I could remember the parts!) lol...LOVE this track, had ALWAYS been a BIG Sting (and before that for years, Police fan) but Dominic's guitar playing and killer tone are a BIG part of it for me,obviously! ;-))
Soul Cages is a masterpiece and an album that is best appreciated if you are in emotional turmoil. Dominic Miller's guitar tone is killer and this album would not be what it is without his tasteful playing. My two cents..
Sting knows who to play with. And thousands of top-level guitarrist would kill to play with him. If he chose this guy is because this was what he was looking for
@hyperboogie i like dominic so much while hearing this song, i wikipedia'd him. His bday is mar 20 1963....(he is younger than i am, darn it). no wonder i love him so much & want to hear more from him & Sting
@blackstratmojo Emotional turmoil; I like that! So few have even heard this album. And it is an "album" in the traditional sense. You must listen to the whole opus. It really is his best, yet strangely remains obscure and under-appreciated. Saw the tour. As with 'the best', Live was even better. Miller's guitar - as you succinctly stated - was "killer" and is the real force supporting this work
Sting said that The Soul Cages album was his way of working through the grief and complexities of his own father-son relationship after the death of his father. Erik Clapton said that he kept Soul Cages on his "turntable" non-stop for the first 6 months following the tragic loss of his son, Connor. It is a really cohesive record. Fierce, but also very tender, and even humorous. Archetypal in scope. A soul-gift to anyone who cares to listen, IMHO ;-)
This was the version that I was looking for and "You Tube" did not disappoint. God. What a lovely song, a great lot philosophical too. "We are the Soul Cages".
This is the one song on the album that is, in essence, a venting of frustration, as it were, but perfectly done so. The conversation between the younger "child" and the fisherman NAILS it. " Why should I whistle when the caged bird sings??"
Her name is Paola Paparelle, and it's actually an Oboe she's playing. Her performance throughtout the entire album add the perfect touch to the character of the collection of songs Sting put together.
This song still sends chills through me...it tells such a good story and sort of blends elements of Sting's personal life with mystic legend. I saw him in Cincinnati during his tour for this album for the bargain price of $25...
bloody awsome -I have so many in my favorites -but when i cean em ou -this one will be on top of my list !-thank you for this one -god it is good !-have a nice day all !-gus
I saw The Soul Cages show, when the CD was 1st released, Sting performed 2 shows in N.Y & 2 in Los Angeles. The show blew my mind, I still get chills hearing this song.
Thank you so much saga55!!!!!!! I have been wanting to see this video since 1991 and I saw it full length today for the first time thanks to you!!!!!!! I got to speak to Stings Sax Player's (Branford Marsalis) secretary at The Tonight Show in 1994, where I learned Sting was wearing a Gianni Versace Buffalo Bill silk shirt on the single album cover for "If I Ever Lose My Faith in You"....
Here are my favorite 10 form Sting: 1. Why should I cry for you 2. Soul Cages 3. It is probably me (both versions) 4. King of pain 5. Be Still My Beating Hear 6. They Dance Alone (Gueca Solo) 7. Fragile 8. Tomorrow Well See 9. Russian 10. Shape of my heart Can you share your favorites?
You could disagree but this is my rating of his albums: 5 Stars: Synchronicity (Live) ('83) 4 Stars: The Dream of the Blue Turtles ('85) 5 Stars: Nothing Like the Sun ('87) 5 Stars: The Soul Cages ('91) 4 Stars: Ten Summoner's Tales ('93) 5 Stars: Demolition Man (Mixed) ('93) 3.5 Stars: Mercury Falling ('96) 3 Stars: Brand New Day ('99) 2 Stars: Sacred Love ('03) Not rated: Songs from the Labyrinth ('06)
This album has really grown on me over the years. Not everyone could accept it after his previous solo albums but it was developed following the natural death of both his Parents. I think it's a very personal soul searching musical journey for him.
video insomma... musica ok... parole super, stupende, e chi più ne ha più ne metta ... in particolari momenti della mia vita di grandissimo sostegno. Loredana
Sounds as fresh and meaningful today as it did back in 1991. But IMHO, there is very little going on in contemporary rock, pop, or whatever you call it today that is decent anyway.
Well I play this album over and over because he is a true rocker on this one. It also hasMad About You on it and that makes me cry. Only Sting!!!!!! I hope that he never retires but I know he will one of these days. World will never be the same.
It's almost impossible for me to keep commentary about this album to the minimum. This is my ultimate October music and has been ever since it's release. While I can't say the Soul Cages was his best album, it ABSOLUTELY is incredibly VIVID. The lyrics and theme behind the entire album is simply haunting. As Sting was in the middle of producing this album when his father passed away, that experience is conveyed eloquently in each song...Simply amazing.
This is such a brilliant song!!! I think The Soul Cages (album) is one of the most underrated albums ever. Every track from begining to end to amazing.
I would LOVE to see Sting and Keith Urban do this song live... After seeing how great Keith and Alicia Keyes did Gimme Shelter at Live Earth, you can only imagine Sting and Urban together on a rockin' tune like this...

Dominic Miller is a good guitar player but a bit overrated if you compare him w/ the masters: Al Dimeola, John McLaughlin, Paco de Lucia, Steve Vai, etc.
Bad. Ass. Thanks for this! This is my second favorite Sting band. I liked him best with dominic miller and Josh Freese on drums for Live 8--that was thee shit.

Well if you ask me who make the best music:
Al Di meola,John Mclaughlin,Paco de Lucia,Steve Vai or Sting
Well Sting wins it clearly
you don't have to be a virtuoso to make good music
When you're less skilled than other virtuoso you rely on good lyrics, good harmony and good melody
Dominic Miller Rules Sting Rules

... I can see you aren't into music.

Dominic Miller is a good guitar player but a bit overrated if you compare him w/ the masters: Al Dimeola, John McLaughlin, Paco de Lucia, Steve Vai, etc.
