It was good at first, stepping in taking him off balance, palm heel him in the face, then it went down hill with the tiger claw thing. Tiger claw is kung fu!
@DragonZord90 I completely agree, there is no 'perfect' defense just as there is no 'perfect' martial art. They all have weaknesses and strengths, I just meant for this specific situation I feel that is a better idea, but with a wall or corner that is indeed a completely different scenario and our Shorin-Ryu defense wouldn't work well or at all in that scenario.
1:00 listen...The Tiger Claw....scrape the top of his neck from his eyes and to his chin...how is that possiible...his fingers is starting from the other dude forehead...pls revise this...the tiger claw..ssshhh...
Sensei Qaeem seems like a very nice guy and I mean no disrespect, but I also practice Shorin-Ryu and there are much more simple ways to defend from this scenario. One of our Kumite Self Defense techniques is identical in the scenario of a unknowledgeable two-handed choke, we simply just step back while pushing the hands off horozontially. The momentum of the quick step makes it possible to disarm the choke extremely easily.
if someone grabed me like that i would cover his hands with my left arm grabing his left wrist, turn to the left and throw a right cross to his jaw, this can also be done if you ars left handed too, also with the right still grabed arm lock to control or break the twat ,you ain't got time for fancy more's if a guy grab's you punch him oos!!
To further add to my previous statement, you have to see it from Muhammed's stand point as the recipient of that particular series of technique or any series of technique for that matter that hasn't dropped him to his butt, chances are Muhammed will shoot in because he is put in a position to react that way.as would anyone who happens to be naturally inclined to tackle someone as a panic or tactical response to the counter threat that has just tried to neutralize their line of sight.
now this just might be my thoughts as an Isshinryu Karate and Jujutsu Instructor but hypothetically speaking what is he going to do when Muhammed shoots in for his legs that are in the process of getting in his fighting stance, after the completion of this "technique" because even if he does back up to a minimum safe distance of 3 feet which is typical for most styles,it will take Muhammed 1 second to close the gap where as it will take 1 1/2 or more for Queem to register whats going on.
SORYU KARATE IS RELATED TO SHORIN RYU KARATE the tiger mouth is not a tiger claw - tiger mouth is a strike to the windpipe to crush it - the tiger claw is to rip thethe face. soryu karate is not a so-salled generic kurutty- it is okinawan karate - and developed by the late soke MICHIO KOYASU - STUDENT OF KANKEN TOYAMA- SORYU KARATE SENIOR MASTER IS GUERRA SHIHAN A 7TH DAN IN AUSTIN TX
Does anyone know if Soryu Karate is related to Shorin Ryu Karate? They sound simular enough, some of the terminologies he uses is alot the same and his stance that of generic karate.
Soryu Karate also has a 'tiger claw' move, we call a 'Tiger Mouth'. it is a killer strike to the throat, meant to collapse the windpipe and/or break it.
Ok, just so everyone who reads this, knows...I actually practice this style, and this is NOT the techniques we use for escaping such a hold. Also, what we consider a 'tiger claw" strike is NOT what is shown here. A 'tiger claw is basically the equivalent of a kill maneuver because it goes for the throat and rips it out in one swift move. Please do not let this video be your example of our style.
This technique does not save you from the immediate danger of your wind pipe being crushed... You should eradicate first the threat (the hands), once safe then attack (with elbow or palm strike or even a wrist lock/grab/break) aggressor...
For most of you who think that there are at least 32 different degrees of black belts in this style, your wrong. It only goes up to 10. There is only one 10th, a few 9ths, plenty of 8ths, and the rest are more common. I go to Brooks Shorin-Ryu Karate, over in Nolensville, Tennessee.
This is for people who practice a lot. this is temple style self defense if you ask me. it has its place and very useful when applied properly. If you take this style or are proficient in another style good tech. to know on how to confuse your opponent. For me, I would do something else. I try not to get close to him, no he can grab my hair. But like I said it has its merrits. Thanks...God Bless...Bow...
Excellent martial arts training video and loved the quality. I hope to mention this style of training to you. - Wing Chun Training Device - just do a search for the martialarm in youtube or google.
The rank system depends on he style. Most japanese/okinawan systems take a lot of time and patience to achieve a shodan rank. And why does he back off to a "ready" or kumai position? After the face rake i would finish him off faster than i started my attack. If a tall guy like that grabbed me I aint stopping till either of us is unconscious.
Ya it's not a bad show of technique, although he seems kind of hesistant in what he is teaching. Tactical 121, ya to acheive any higher level in Karate should take you atleast 7-8 years of consistent training, going to class about 3 times a week. Shorin-Ryu, the study that I practice, has a 9 degree system. In some arts it's called "dan", I think Tae kwon doe is such, and to acheive that level I would estimate takes about 30+years.
this is just basic self defense as i see it. Its just shown by guy whoi wears a blackbelt. idk where he got it from tho.... but i guess this is kinda helpful for some basic self defense. But id still rather learn real karate from a real dojo

not practical at all. if the other guy is bigger or stronger that's kind of pitiful. better off bringing your hands up through his while kicking him in the nuts.
you know the most vids i watched from those "experts" all i can see is bad comments; Tiger claws?who the fuck does he think he is?just grab the guys arms from inside and twist them
When he grabs me, I'm going to step in, turn this way, shift that way, bring my arms up, swing them around, hit him in the face like this, use my tiger claw, rip downward, scratch his neck, jump backward, and be in my fighting stance!
You know... you... you could just step back and kick him. Your legs are longer than his arms. Or... completely ignore that and have fun pretending your Bruce Lee!

Your horrible spelling, punctuation, showing no signs of grammar really made that comment funny. (I don't mean it in a bad way)
I do agree with you to a certain point, just uppercut them, but it's not always that simple; and it's kinda hard moving at all when being choked.
But thanks for the laughs :)

it is the opposite of goju ryu exactly. and then there is a combined art known as isshen ryu which is both.
AurumenK 2 years ago
In Isshin Ryu we don't wear those flamboyant uniforms, and this video is a great example as to why you don't water down your system.
Sochinsensei 1 year ago
i agree with GabrielGroverMan. take away the hands. it doesnt take much force to crush one's throat.
this technique has it's ups. but when i was in this situation the krav maga front choke technique saved my ass.
