Oral motor exercises have been proven by research to be relatively ineffective. A lot of SLPs are not aware of these studies, however, and continue to do them. A lot of kids just enjoy the sensory stimulation, though.

Why is the speech therapist using rubber gloves to massage Mayci's jaws and cheecks? I am quite sure it is contrary to good practice to wear gloves while massaging someone.

@PauleQueenie It is actually required for sanitary purposes in this field.

@lindsayygracee, no I don't agree. The gloves create more discomfort than the desire purpose of the massage (relaxation or stimulation etc...). Anyway, therapists would do anything nowadays and claim it as something better (sanitary, improve results etc...
