hmm... im getting one and i am concerned about him fitting through. he is 8in and also, should i raise my water lvl. i am guessing i should put plants at the water line so he can still peak his head up. thanks
problem. bigger turtles wont fit through that tine opening to get into the area. my turtle is wide and long, theres no way hes gonna pass through there!
will it work for two yellow bellied sliders who are pretty big. because i have literately the exact same tank as in the video. however my turtles are getting big and we have to raise the water level. but if we raise it too high the basking light will be too intense for them and kill them. if we have the water level as high as you do will that filter that you have be big enough for the both of them. and will two medium sized turtles fit in that? thank you so much
I need some advice. I have only one yellow bellied slider and i want to get a seconed turtle. im not sure what species of turtle but yeah. i am getting a 55 Gal. aquarim and im wondering would they be happy as adults in that very tank? or should i get bigger? and what other speicies of turtle would you recommend me getting to live with my yellow bellly?
@JustCallMeLevon - It will fit most tanks as long as they are 13 inches wide or smaller. Length doesn't matter as far as the product fitting on the tank. It is the width you need to be concerned with.
Alright so the 55gal I have currently is 13inches wide and the turtle topper is 12inches wide. Is there any possible way that I could squeeze it on or rig it so it would fit. Also im redoing my tank and upgrading so I have been recommended this product and im very interested! /___\Þ ITs suposed to be a turtle :)
I have a 70 gallon tank that I'd love to put a topper on. My vote for a larger version. Is there a safe way to adapt the current model to larger tanks?
i have a 5 year old red-eared slider turtle its about 6in long and 4 maybe 5 in wide will this Turtle Topper work it would really help if anyone could get back to me on here thanks
i have a 36 gal bowed tank and im planning on putting my res turtle in there when he gets big enough, would one of these turtle toppers work on that as well? or would it not fit right? and if not, would you make some that would fit a front bowed tank?
I asked nicely about a year ago if they would make a topper for a 120 gallon aquarium and these guys replied that if enough people requested a larger topper they would make 1, Well turtle topper dudes there you go read your comments and you will see many people would like a larger topper
@Rosman1974 Thanks for your comments and we appreciate your passion for turtles and the fact that you would like to see a larger size. hey how are you doing i have a 20 long i have a cover over it my fillter is a big waterfall wich my turtle sits on top of it i would like to keep it because it is a big fillter and works good for my tank however i really want to get the toper but if i do what cover would i need also wich size so that i can keep the waterfall so my turtle is unable to get out?
hey, just asking for some tips. i'm getting two hatchling western painted turtles, and i'm getting a 30 gallon tank. i'm using a turtle topper, so i would have to fill the water basically to the top. i have a really big driftwood thing that takes up a lot of room, but is that too much water for em? i mean i don't want them drowning or anything, so am i okay how i am, or should i keep the water level lower with the dock, then move em to the topper when they get bigger, or is it fine how it is?
@icee67 They won't drown if you have plenty of snags and plastic plants at the water line, in addition to the topper ramp. Put the fuzzy side of velcro strips on the ramp too so the little guys can grab it and climb up into the beach area
I am also concerned by that. I'm off to do some research on this product. It seems like a great idea but I just have to hope it'll fit my larger slider.
What do you do when your turtles get too big for a 55 gallon tank? What options are available then? I would assume that most ppl who own turtles expect them to out grow a 55 gallon tank.
@bvhp415 You can custom fit it to your 100gal with plexiglass, and some strips of wood that trace the outer rim of your tank, i've already thought of it even though my turtles only 3inches shell length.
Pretty cool product but I can make sometime thats better then this for less then 20 bucks haha. But I would buy this cause Im not so creative with things but it won't fit my 40 gallon breeder.
@BaseballCardFreek trust me dude i've been to home depot before buying the turtle topper looking at plexiglass, screws, wood, silicone, and it would have cost me like 35bux to create my own, but I decided to cough up the extra 10bux. Trust me dude it's well worth it, and no I don't work for these dudesl
@jalbm222 You don't use wood for it or screws, Just plexiglass silicone and egg crate. The only thing thats kinda expensive is the plexiglass but the total will be no where near 50 bucks.
And also I kinda have to make my own haha this won't fit anything wider then 13 inches.
@BaseballCardFreek Sorry but for some reason i don't know what egg crate is, lol. What is it made of, i might need to use it in the future when my turtle gets his 100gal.
@djvroxurworld12 I know exactly what ur saying. I have one red eared that's under 3inches that does the same thing. He will be basking, and if I sneek up i'll catch him all strtched out and sleeping, but if he sees me, he flies out of their like a speeding bullet. You have to remember that this is normal because that's what they do in the wild when ever they see prey or get scared, it may take a long time for him to realize that when he sees you it's no big deal.
This thing is totally worth the $40dollars I spent, LOVE IT. My 3inch red ear just loves it, he chills on the unerwater platform, he climbs the ramp and basks like a champ. I have two 5.5in lamps on top, and stuck a thermometer on the inside of the clear plastic part. I'm currently using it on a 30gallon tank. Was going to make one out of wood, but wood smells and rots when it gets wet, and any other material would probably cost as much as the turtle topper, or just look to cheesy or cheap.
Awesome demonstration guys! Picked up one for my mud turtles tank. Worked out great and gives them a lot more room to swim around since the turtle topper sits on top of the tank. So simple...can't believe these haven't been on the market forever. Thinking about selling 'em on my site ;)
this seems so flawed. you need the water level high enough so the platform is at a level where it's a natural transition from water to platform. but that means the water level will be really close to the top of the tank
@SeshMastaFlex super late reply but... I am not comfortable with the water at such a high level because what's stopping the turtle(s) from climbing out?
I have this.. it works great all around but I still haven't figured out a way to cover the top of the open part of my tank, I've had to cover it with plastic so my turtle doesn't climb out but I'd like something more permanent. Anyone know what a good idea to cover the top would be? I'd cut a 55 gallon top but it seems like that would leave sharp edges.
To Joeybsmooth...Yes, both of mine are now loving it! They go up and down at will and spend hours everyday basking. I initially lured them into the Topper with romaine lettuce.
This is a lot better then a dock since my turtle won't sink somewhat into the water on it. He can get fully out of the water to bask now. Plus it doesn't look bad. Very toy looking, but I like it. :3
Glad you were able to make it work on your tank, we would love to see pictures or video of what you did. Check out the Reptology page for more reptile products.
The current Turtle Topper is designed to fit tanks up to 55 gallons or 13" or less in width. If anyone would like to see a larger Turtle Topper, visit the Reptology YouTube page and let us know!!
If enough people request a larger version we will consider putting it out, please stop by our Reptology page and let us know you want a bigger version!!!
@REPTOLOGY If you do will you please keep in mind the size an adult slider gets, I would love one that would hold my two adult red eared sliders in my 125 gallon aquarium!! :) I hope that you guys do make a large one, I know I would buy it :)
The Turtle Topper will not work for a 120 gallon tank unfortunately. However, if anyone is interested in a larger size, please post and let us know. Thank you - Reptology
I just bought one of these yesterday because my turtles were getting to big for the floating dock that I had in their tank. I have had this for less than 24 hours and I have already decided that this is the best artificial land area available for semi aquatic turtles. I currently have 2 Midland Painted turtles and an African Helmeted Turtle and they all love this product. I wish that this product would have been around about 15 years ago when I started keeping turtles.
It was around 60 dollars at my local pet store. At first I did not think that it was worth it but now that I have bought it, I want one for all of my turtle tanks.
Could someone please send we the width of the ramp, and the width and length of the underwater dock. I want to buy one, but i need to make sure my turtle isn't too big. Please and thank you.
My turtle uses and loves the Topper. The weight of the unit keeps it in place, really the suction cups are just extra security, but they seem to work fine. i would recommend it.
Only problem with this is that my Male RES is like A DOG! he'll try to climb out of the tank for sure with a water level that high! I loved that painted turtle.. I wanna steal it.. damn.. lol I just saw it today at Big Al's for $44.99 I believe.. not sure if I want it or not.. it seems kinda of sketchy with the suction cups.. has anyone bought it and liked it? Has anyone tried the magnetic turtle dock from exo terra? not sure if it can hold adult turtles up.
The magnetic dock holds adult turtles easy. Someone i know uses it with a 9inch res.
The turtle topper is susposed to be for raising the water lvl really high. I know alot of people that bought it and really like it but alot can build there own for cheaper then $50
I just bought one of these for my 5" Ouachita Map female, because she was getting too big for her turtle dock, let alone her turtle dock was getting water logged, she was getting too heavy.
I saw this product and was sold; I wanted to make my own, but I'm not handy. The make of the product is very good quality, sturdy, and easy to assemble.
I have to agree about the ramp... very slippery and loud when she does climb in and out. I want to look into getting something for better traction.
So is it overall worth the purchase? I wa considerign buying one because my RES is getting too big for the ramp I have. It is funny to see him struggling to stay on that thing but it does not keep his all the way out the water.
I personally think it's worth it. I mean, I could be super handy (or my boyfriend can, at least, and build one from scratch, but we really don't have the time, let alone know what materials I should use which will not be affected by water contact, etc.
I also think it's worth it knowing that my turtle uses it and loves it. It's also made of good quality hard plastic that is easy to clean, and you can tell it'll last for a long time. It's a great investment to know your turt will stay healthy
thank you, I have since purchased one and am glad I did. My turtle loves it, the only thing is somtimes he goes up and down that thing (over & over), being made of plastic, it is very LOUD. I do not regret getting it though.
For a Petco-type product, I think this is great. There are so many well-meaning novice turtle owners that aren't aware of certain things like making sure the turtle is 100% dry when basking. Those standard "turtle docks" are horrible!
This is the only commercial above-tank platform I've seen, and it's good for people who aren't so handy (like me) and can't make one. I have this and I really that I can use a more powerful external filter with it-- I just wish it was prettier.
This is ok. I just got one for my turtle and off the bat there is an issue with her getting traction. I put her in it to see how she does and when she goes to get out she about hurts herself because the ramp is basically a slip'n slide. I am going to have to put reptile carpet on the ramp or something for traction.
An aquarium fish heater does not warm up the basking spot and the temperature needed depends on the species. By the way did you notice the very large wire top, it is not going to melt!
This comment has received too many negative votesshow
well very good basking thing. but it is plastic and can melt and become unsafe for you reptile. you have to consider EVERYTHING before you advertise things like this. i think most people will also like too know that your turtle can live without a heat lamp. this is done by changing the heat lamp with just a UVB and UVA lighting. and place a tropical fish heater inside the water. make sure you get a heater that will cost less. i know this because i am currently doing this and is very effective.
If you watch and listen to the whole video, Paul describes the wattage of light recommended. It will, in fact, not melt the plastic as long as you read the directions that come with the Topper. Thanks for watching.
hmm... im getting one and i am concerned about him fitting through. he is 8in and also, should i raise my water lvl. i am guessing i should put plants at the water line so he can still peak his head up. thanks

I wish that this product would have been around about 15 years ago when I started keeping turtles.

how much
MYTURTLE123 2 years ago
It was around 60 dollars at my local pet store. At first I did not think that it was worth it but now that I have bought it, I want one for all of my turtle tanks.
mad0131 2 years ago
can you get it at petco
MYTURTLE123 2 years ago
According to the posts before me you can get the topper for about 50 dollars at Petco

Could someone please send we the width of the ramp, and the width and length of the underwater dock. I want to buy one, but i need to make sure my turtle isn't too big. Please and thank you.
Mpain55 2 years ago
The ramp is 7" wide at its biggest and the underwater platform is about 11" long and 4 inches wide. My turtle sleeps on it everynight!!!

one problem its for 55gallon and below. I have a 75gallon tank and 300 gallon stock tank. So thats out lol.
I made my above tank basking areas for way cheaper then $50
Starcraft2488 2 years ago
My turtle uses and loves the Topper. The weight of the unit keeps it in place, really the suction cups are just extra security, but they seem to work fine. i would recommend it.
bonjovisfan 2 years ago
Only problem with this is that my Male RES is like A DOG! he'll try to climb out of the tank for sure with a water level that high! I loved that painted turtle.. I wanna steal it.. damn.. lol I just saw it today at Big Al's for $44.99 I believe.. not sure if I want it or not.. it seems kinda of sketchy with the suction cups.. has anyone bought it and liked it? Has anyone tried the magnetic turtle dock from exo terra? not sure if it can hold adult turtles up.
sicilianotoronto 2 years ago
The magnetic dock holds adult turtles easy. Someone i know uses it with a 9inch res.
The turtle topper is susposed to be for raising the water lvl really high. I know alot of people that bought it and really like it but alot can build there own for cheaper then $50
Starcraft2488 2 years ago
Always use a lamp with a BROAD SPECTRUM bulb, you don't need and extra "heat" lamp.. that's just a way to make you buy more stuff!
sicilianotoronto 2 years ago
I just bought one of these for my 5" Ouachita Map female, because she was getting too big for her turtle dock, let alone her turtle dock was getting water logged, she was getting too heavy.
I saw this product and was sold; I wanted to make my own, but I'm not handy. The make of the product is very good quality, sturdy, and easy to assemble.
I have to agree about the ramp... very slippery and loud when she does climb in and out. I want to look into getting something for better traction.
Sugahbabie 2 years ago
So is it overall worth the purchase? I wa considerign buying one because my RES is getting too big for the ramp I have. It is funny to see him struggling to stay on that thing but it does not keep his all the way out the water.
rshandy 2 years ago
I personally think it's worth it. I mean, I could be super handy (or my boyfriend can, at least, and build one from scratch, but we really don't have the time, let alone know what materials I should use which will not be affected by water contact, etc.
I also think it's worth it knowing that my turtle uses it and loves it. It's also made of good quality hard plastic that is easy to clean, and you can tell it'll last for a long time. It's a great investment to know your turt will stay healthy
Sugahbabie 2 years ago
thank you, I have since purchased one and am glad I did.

I have this and I really that I can use a more powerful external filter with it-- I just wish it was prettier.

l love it . I was looking for something for my turtle and you made it.I thank u and my turtle thank u.

This is ok. I just got one for my turtle and off the bat there is an issue with her getting traction. I put her in it to see how she does and when she goes to get out she about hurts herself because the ramp is basically a slip'n slide. I am going to have to put reptile carpet on the ramp or something for traction.

Starcraft2488 2 years ago
Someone asked me where I got mine, they are in Petco.
bonjovisfan 2 years ago
isnt this essentially the same as an above the tank basking area??
dumaaaaaa 2 years ago
It is an above tank basking area. Just a commercial pre built one so you don't have to build it yourself.

muffdaddy3012 2 years ago
An aquarium fish heater does not warm up the basking spot and the temperature needed depends on the species. By the way did you notice the very large wire top, it is not going to melt!

well very good basking thing. but it is plastic and can melt and become unsafe for you reptile. you have to consider EVERYTHING before you advertise things like this. i think most people will also like too know that your turtle can live without a heat lamp. this is done by changing the heat lamp with just a UVB and UVA lighting. and place a tropical fish heater inside the water. make sure you get a heater that will cost less. i know this because i am currently doing this and is very effective.
muffdaddy3012 2 years ago
If you watch and listen to the whole video, Paul describes the wattage of light recommended. It will, in fact, not melt the plastic as long as you read the directions that come with the Topper. Thanks for watching.

FYI - Penn Plax consumer service told me the Turtle Topper should be in stores in April.
bonjovisfan 2 years ago
im worried about how hot it may get inside that thing
ReptileKid777 2 years ago
Its not a problem.
The normal basking setup for a turtle has two lamps - one fluorescent for UV light, and one incandescent for heat.
With this, you can just use a lower wattage heat lamp.

I'd like it, but it says "up to 55gal tank", so what about for the larger turtles that require bigger aquariums?
