  • I had one - made in Spandau, 1896. It was a beautiful piece. It had the cleaning rod, and I had the brass hilt side mount bayonet for it, too. Unfortunately since my wife's ex would not let up on hassling and harassing her, I threatened to give him a severe beating. The state came and took my '88 and my Lee Enfields and ordered them all destroyed. So sad.

  • Adorable.

  • does this gun shoot 8x57 IS ammo or 8x57 I?(because it has an s stamp just over the half moon, which would mean that it is meant for S ammo on german rifles-Idon't know what it means on the turkish ones.)

  • @charivari100 Always check the diameter of the bore. I have seen a lot of '88 "S" marked, but all of them were rebarreled by Czech in the '20ss. Czech used 318 barrels, so could be dangerous shot a .323 cartridge. My rifle (Steyr 1894) went to Ecquador after the refurbishment in CZ and then come back in Europe thanks to a german delear. Sellier & Bellot makes 318 FMJ balls for '88s but a lead ball works fine too (and it is cheaper!).

  • Boo-yah!

  • sweet rifle man always wanted that same one

  • Again, you guys rule. I would love to be able to afford to go out and shoot all day with such variety. Lucky kid. You're a good man. Be well.

  • The beer belly gives you a low center of gravity, and makes you a steady shooter. Good job!

  • awesome. when my dad came to the U.S. in 73 he got to bring his. he still has not let me shoot it.

  • were you in the service if so what war...or peace time

  • Gewehner 88? WTF it is actually Gewehr 88.-.-

  • Do these morons really shoot at this old tree?

  • yes mrmagikrush your right it's not a ghewiener it's not a saucece.

but its pronounced the Guh-ver? or Geh-ver?

  • @RobotBoyTheLegoBoy OMG you're a dumb. How could the M1888 copy of the 1935 dated K98K?:D Think before writing.

  • Great Video!

I just bought a Gewehr 88 and i was wondering how the accuracy is on this gun?

  • That first rifle has a good resemblance of a Mosin Nagant. You have a lot of cool old military rifle gramps !! Nice collection.

  • @mixwell1983

I noticed that too. It looks more Mosin-like than Mauser-like.

  • @Scioneer Gewehr 88 is unrelated to Mauser 98. It was designed by german armaments commitee, not by Mauser engineers.

  • how much did this rifle cost?

  • The kid need more training on this weapon!

  • Gewehr 88

  • I thought it was pronounced Ge vher 98

  • Ohh nice gewher 88. Where this one was made? And hehe my friend, you are very young grandpa!

  • by FAR the best grandpa

  • You sir a fucking retard, HURR GURVENUR 88, It's called a Goower 88 and Goower is the sound of saying Gewehr.

  • @MaxPayne719 stupid?

  • i own gew 88 good rifle got mine 125.00

  • you grandson suxs man he should stand UP instead of kneeling and lutting the top on top of a helmet. he should hold with right hand on the bottom top and left hand on trigger

  • you are really lucky to get an 88 commision rifle they are so rare to be in origional condition with the origional date on them most of the Turkish ones were rebuilt in the thirties that rifle is in amazing shape for being 119 years old

  • grandpa's fat

  • Hi, you got a G88/05, a modified G88 for Mauser loading strips (Ladestreifen). The first version hat a Mannlicher-System loading bloc (Laderahmen). I have both versions, but I only use the 88/05 for shooting, cause the blocs are hard to find and don´t last long.

    Greetings from germany

  • Looks like a good time. You should look around on Gunbroker for the follower. Since it was Turked, I don't know what they did to your particular Gew88, but it originally had a special en bloc clip that was needed. When they were reworked, they usually had guides for a standard 8x57 stripper clip milled into the rear receiver bridge and a follower and follower spring added to the closed up magazine. It shouldn't be hard to find them.

Looks like a fun day was had!

  • your so lucky those are 1 of the most rarest guns of ww2 they cost around 2,000 lowest i have heard

  • I know prices have risen lately, but I think if you found a Gewehr 88/05 (which this model is), and it was in decent shape, most of the parts numbers matched, and all the parts were there, a fair price would be around $175.00.

  • I think you'll find that Gewehr 88's don't go for anything like that unless it's something really special such as a presentation rifle or perhaps a proof rifle from the prototype stage. I picked up an all matching, non-Turked one last year for $200. It's a bit rough, but nothing to kick out of the gun safe.

  • I'm probably wrong about this, but isn't it pronounced the Guh-ver? or Geh-ver?

  • You are correct. I mispronounced it. But then again I'm from Texas, so that should not suprise you

  • Oh, haha, yeah I'm from Georgia, and I've just heard people pronounce it that way.

  • Guh-vair is the correct way to say rifle in German. Guh-veer is I believe how the Dutch pronounce it!

  • Guh-vair is not completely correct because the U in English(not as a single letter but in most words e.g. gUn) sounds like the A in German. So Guh-vair would sound like German Gawehr. English A sounds like German Ä(or AE) which is similar to German E. So if you take the English A pronounciation as you know it from the name GAvin you get Gah-vair.

Or which pronounciation would you use for the U in your Guh-vair?

  • lol, For the English lesson, Danke mensch! But it is not easy for me, as I speak American, and not Oxford! lol.

  • Ok maybe with American pronounciation Guh-vair sounds like Gewehr, I do not know for I am not a native English speaker.

And yes at school we study Oxford(Advanced learners Dictionary :-P) English, but most of us learn English from movies, books or the internet so maybe we mix up some British and American English.

  • Don't worry his suggestions are not too good either.

If I know English good enough you should pronounce it like that: Gah-vair

I am not sure about the Gah but the vair(like air) sounds exactly like the German wehr. So if you say Gah(like Ga in Gavin) and vair(like air) it should sound like Gewehr.

Nice rifle btw. How much did it cost? Here in Germany they cost around 300€.

  • Paid 250 US (or about 170 €) at a gun shop in Oklahoma City

  • Nice!

Because skeetborader wrote that the 88s would cost around 2000$

You would get an original scoped K98 Sniper rifle in excellent condition and nummerngleich(you know same numbers on all of the parts of the gun, I don't know the English word for that sry) for that price!

  • I paid fair market value, I can't remember if I mentioned it in the vid, but this is a Model 1888 Turkish Rework. Germany supplied these to the Turks who used them in WWI and later. My buying guide shows excellent condition all German Gewehr 88 only go for about 750 USD, now that is not the sniper. Those with a scope go as high as 2500

  • Well maybe then skeetborader mixed up the prices of the scoped and unscoped version.

I am quite interested in these old guns, but I never saw a scoped G88. But that sounds quite cool

  • I also have never seen an original Gewehr 88 that was scoped.

I have seen Gewehr 98's that were scoped & original.

  • $250.00 would be fair if it was all matching numbers and all your parts were present, including the original cleaning rod. I would consider that a tad bit high.

  • IMHO $250.00 is a tad bit high if you have missing parts. Looks like you had a great time with your Grandson though! How much is a day like that worth?

  • @DeutscherFilmer3 Gee Vehr In Germany. In Northern Germany pronouce in like slight FV sound.

  • @kyodaie

Ich weiß, ich bin doch auch Deutscher. ;)

  • @paulkj1956 haha

  • guh vehr

  • @MrMagikRush Yes indeed german W is a V sound

  • @MrMagikRush I pronounce it as: Gew-Er.

  • HooooYaaaaw!

    Grandpa has a good eye!

Next time give Austin a Gatling M134 Minigun!

    That would be fun XD
