  • Two VERY ugly swung strikes...

  • haha hes human

  • good for nick mccoy

at least now if he hits the minors and ends up with the 94% of players that never see the bigtime, he can say "I took strasburg deep"

and sadego, apparently you're an mlb calibre pitching coach...bro, anyone who knows anything about baseball knows that there are a million and one physical and mental adjustments that come with pro calibre ball...calm down with the bitterness

  • thats something you can tell your grandkids......"I hit a homer of a (future) cy young winner in collge."

  • Studies do actually show that wooden bats and Aluminum bats travel the same distance, it's just a matter of speed: the aluminum bat makes the ball travel quicker. As unbelievable as that sounds.

  • I hate aluminum bats. That would not have cleared the fence if it was a wooden bat.

  • lol, mccoy looked like a fool the first 2 pitches

  • That's what happens when you get any sort of contact on a 99+ mile an hour fastball.

  • He is going to get smashed off of real hitting onless he makes some serious mental changes and becomes a pitcher. He supplies all the power and is too predictable. Good hitters will look for a fastball, and regardless of the speed, won't miss it.

  • zooky... this is the away uniform

  • This isnt strasburg his team is black and red

  • anyone know of any good aluminum bats i could buy that are under $100?

  • it depends, are you using a -3, a senior league or a youth bat?

  • @xK4rBoN none

  • Why all the Nolan Ryn hate here, look at somethings he did(From Wikipedia) Ryan ranks first all-time in strikeouts (5,714), fewest hits allowed per nine innings (6.56), and no-hitters (7). He is also fifth in innings pitched (5,386), second in games started (773), seventh in shutouts (61) and is tied for 14th in wins (324). Opposing hitters hit only .204 against Ryan during his career, though they had a .309 on base percentage against him. He also limited hitters to a .298 slugging percentage.

  • Maybe not best pitcher ever but Bill James has down as 24 best pitcher all time.

Sure he walked a lot of batters but he was the hardest pitcher in the history of the game to get a base hit off of. The games is over 100 years old and he was the best at it. Someone brings up ERA and he's at 244, well his Career ERA is better than Randy Johnson and Steve Carlton two of the best ever to play the game.

  • Why you guys hatin on nolan ryan? He had a hall of fame career you wish you can do the things he did on the mound.

  • He sure pissed on that one lol

  • fastest swing ive ever seen he didnt even cheat he just anticipated it u know when ur sitting on a fastball and you get it almost 99 percent of the time u will pull it but that right there was the perfect example of baseball at its finest

  • he ripped that shit

  • This guys gonna get rocked in 2010

  • Based on that homer McCoy should demand a signing bonus of at least $5 million!

  • @simontrent1475 lmao

  • just sayin when ur throwin that hard, and using an aluminum bat and he luckily makes square contact, that ball is going far

  • that shit was crushed. and mistake pitch or not, the batter still outdueled the pitcher

  • the best pitching prospect since josh beckett if you ask me. he does change up speeds effectively too, his fastball hits 102 then his curveball drops doen to about 80. wow too much talent haha

  • that pitch was a mistake, catcher wanted it away, he left it up and in, that batter should realize he got lucky and got a mistake pitch to hit. Also, aluminum bats !!! they're ridiculous, huge sweet spot. i think NCAA should go to wood, so scout are looking at prospects playing with the same equipment as in the bigs.

  • on a wood if that was on the sweet spot that would have been a homerun

  • No matter how hard you throw, there's always someone with a quicker bat.

  • Half of these comments don't make any sense he gives up one home run and all of a sudden he is overrated. Strasburg is alot different than many MLB pitchers but I think he will have great success. Now the argument with Nolan Ryan is just absurd. He is the greatest of all time and I believe he will always be. I mean he only threw 7 no-no's.

  • nolon ryan is overrated he through so many losses

  • Nolan Ryan? Overrated? You are a fucking idiot.

  • Losses are a stupid way of determining a pitcher. A pitcher does not get an automatic win if he strikes out 27 in a row. Offense and defense play into the factor of a win or a loss. So ya Nolan Ryan is the best and will forever be the best.

  • does over rated equal 5714 strikeouts no hitters over 250 wins shut up

  • Win-Loss Record: 324-292 (was on a ton of bad teams), Most strikeouts, lifetime: 5714, Longest service: 27 years, Most no-hitters, career: 7, Most strikeouts, season: 383 AL, 1973), Most seasons, 200+ strikeouts: 15, Most seasons, 300+ strikeouts: 6... yeah he's overrated alright!

  • Wins 324 Losses- 292 World Championship - 1 Home runs given up- 321 BB- 2795 (first all time) BB/9 - 6.6 (giving the other team between 6 and 7 extra baserunners a game) Hits surrendered- 3923 Cy Youngs - 0 ERA+ - 111 (289 all time) K/BB - 2.044 (234 all time) a typical nolan ryan game was a lot of strikeouts, a lot of walks and home runs. He was a typical texas hurler with incredible durability, but never the greatest pitcher...not even close. I'd put 20 pitchers ahead of him all time
  • *BB/9 - 4.7

  • Your absolutely right. 7 no hitters means your beyond tough to hit, but you do have to admit theres a Brett Favre comparison here between sticking around a long time and having numbers accumulate and some dubious honors (first in walks, a ton of hr given up etc.), both of which come with the teritory. No Cy Young sticks out but you don't throw 7 no hitters and 29 one hitters without great stuff.

  • *19 one hitters

  • @garretfcs1 R U RETARDED?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!? NOLAN RYAN IS ONE OF THE GREATEST... IF NOT THE GREATEST PITCHERS IN HISTORY..... HE IS 14TH ON THE CAREER WINS LIST..... DO YOUR RESEARCH BEFORE U SAY SOMETHING STUPID LIKE THAT

  • ..we'll see.. alot of players can hit the high heat in bigs.. if he can fluxuate up his speeds he'll be dominate.. i can't see a rook intimidating players off the plate though.. if he gets cocky.. theyre gonna charge his skinny ass.. gluck though man.

  • that doesnt happen to often

  • easier said than done

  • with a 100mph fastball, just put the bat on the ball and it'll go.

  • tha harder throw it, tha faster ur off speed pitches will b..u throw every pitch the same speed...if u throw the off speed pitch, n this case tha slider, tha grip and spin will slow it down naturally

  • I wonder if he drilled the next hitter right in the back. I would have. Make it known not to get too comfortable in the box.

  • he sits on 102, then throws a 93 mph slider. he is nasty as mess

  • Man this Dude is awesome. Tony Gwynn his head coach says that he already has the stuff he just needs to work on the little things. Let's get real a guy that throws in the high 90s and has some bats backing him up will win in MLB. Nolan Ryan spent a lot of his career playing for a bad Angels team but really showed his stuff when he became the first million dollar player for the Astros. Never Say Nolan Ryan is overrated because you team also has to score runs. It's not that hard to lose 1-0

  • 7 innings? Please. Pedro and Koufax's domination extended for more than 7 innings routinely. Thats like saying we need more players who can go 1 for 3 every night. If you do that you're good, but great hitters do more.

  • just so everyone knows. everyone keeps talking about the curvballs at the start of the at bat. those are actually sliders with ridiculous amounts of vertical break. His slider some people say is harder to hit then his fastball

  • i'd try to hit a good curveball any day, over a good slider. this guy's slider probably knocks the bat out of your hands. used to catch a couple of guys in high school and american legion with hard dropping sliders and i'll tell you, my glove hand at the end of the day knew he had been in a baseball game behind the plate

looks like he hung a curve in this particular clip, the guy hit it before it broke

  • of course he's goin number one but when you throw that hard someone can guess fastball and its goin far if you can catch up

  • why are all of you trying to be annalists. and if you havent seen him play live dont say shit. ive seen him play in person and this guy is legit. so dont talk shit cause he is goin # 1 and you cant say anything to that.

  • amen!!! he is a phenom....most of these jokers dont even play baseball

  • Dude...location, location, location!

The catcher was setting up on the outside corner and it's VERY clear that Strasburg missed his spot badly by throwing high and down the heart of the plate...perhaps the inner half of the heart of the plate, but still. It was apparently in the wheelhouse of Nick McCoy!

  • Frost you're retarded. Watch the first two pitches again and then rethink your thought that he can 'only throw hard'

  • steven strasburd is over rated, kid only throws hard, not that impressive

  • I suppose the same thing was said for Nolan Ryan...lol

You don't have a freakin' clue what kind of pitcher this guy will be...you're basing it on 1 pitch...

  • Nolan Ryan is overrated.

  • Yeah...I'm sure Ryan was overrated...after all, at the age of 43 he threw his 7th no-hitter for starters.

    lol...dumb ass.

  • people make him out to be the greatest pitcher of all time. sure he struck out over 5700 batters, but his adjusted e.r.a. is only 111, considering that 100 means your average, he doesn't appear that great. he threw hard and threw the most no hitters and one hitters in the history of the game but he is by no means the greatest pitcher of all time. that's why i say he is overrated. he's not the best but still a hall of famer.

  • Well, let me start by apologizing for my previous comment...I'll keep it civil.

My initial point to the other poster was not to build the argument that Nolan Ryan was the greatest pitcher...I was saying that the poster was saying that Strasburg was overrated based on this vid, and I used Nolan Ryan merely as an example, because I'm sure people caught up to his fastball when he was 20-21 yrs old as well...that's what started this.

  • Regarding Nolan Ryan being overrated...I think his stats speak for themselves. Is he the best pitcher ever? No. Certainly not. But I tell you what..I'd put him in my starting rotation. Overrated? By who? Those who claim he's the greatest only because he threw hard and had so many no-hitters, etc...?

I'm not one of those people. I simply believe that he was very impressive, and certainly a hall of famer.

I'm just hoping Strasburg will develop into a hall of fame bound pitcher.

  • ya i see what your saying. i thought you were boasting about ryan as the greatest. i too hope strasburg becomes what many project him to be. nothing is more entertaining in baseball than a pitcher who dominates for 7 innings every start, like pedro did back in the late 90s and koufax in the mid 60's

  • Exactly. We need more pitchers like the ones you've mentioned. The evolution of the game practically demands that the era of the dominant pitchers will rise again! Maybe it's a pipe dream...I know...chicks dig the long ball...

  • Comment removed

  • i love nick mccoy. hes a beast.

  • yeah haha he was clocked at 102 according to SI which is just sick

  • he throws around 100, not 90-92

  • ya thats why greg maddux got ripped for 355 wins, four cy youngs, and argueably the greatest pitcher of this generation

  • someone with a 90-92 mph fastball doesnt strike out 23 batters in one game at the college level....try 102 mph

  • Man im not sayin strasburg throws 90-92 bc its alot harder than that but strikeouts arent just about velocity. Im a college player and we had a guy who was 85-88 from the left side who K'ed 18 in a game twice. U gota have movement and good secondary pitches. He is in the minors for the marlins now btw

  • Did you not see the 2 Nasty curves to start the at-bat. Guy looked silly. Then he swung basically before Strasburg threw it and made contact.

  • hahaha yes i noticed that too.

  • He does have movement and a couple of decent secondary pitches...

Have you seen his curveball? It's insane.

He'll learn to develop other secondary pitches in time.

He made a mistake here...and that hitter is no push-over. This particular fastball had no movement, but Stephen's typical fastball has movement.

  • ya i was reading a sports illustrated article and a scout saying that he could be a solid number 2 or 3 guy for any team and that he is the best pitching prospect out of college he has seen and it's not even close, and remember all the hype around Prior and his 10 million dollar bonus. So he also said that he doesn't need the minors and is ready for the majors now. So coming from a major league scout it sounds like he has 3 above average pitches in break and location and is working on a 4.

  • Imagine him mastering a split-finger fastball...lol...sick.

  • ha ya no kidding. but he'd have to can his changeup. I think he could develop a filthy slider too, given his arm slot and arm speed. a 99 mph moving fastball, 86 mph curve, 90 mph split, and a 93 mph slider...just nasty.

  • he does have a slider

  • he already has a damn good slider

  • He is human OMG!!!!!!

  • how the hell did he hit that?

    lol

  • Props to the hitter for getting around on that fastball. Great hands.

  • Metal bats = just like cheating

  • hey man how far did it go?... it had to be atleast 17-18 miles .. lol... especially if it was a 100+ mph fastball
