It is genuine. Yet at this stage (the one shown) it is actually not effective as defense unless the attacker has emotionally charged anger.
It is interesting not to have to damage an attacker to much though.

If this is genuine then it's pretty effective as a defense. Now you could perhaps also opt for not making your enemies all that angry.
